Twain said “Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it”. Love your country, but despise your government and its leaders is another way to put it.
“If we are talking about something important like money I’ll play it straight. If it’s just sending a man to prison, I’ll put my thumb on the scale.” Incredible snapshot into San Fran brain.
Putting the brakes on another weak line of DNA. I love his work. Like nobody's ever seen before. I like this quote from the press conference: I'm very good at reading language. Well said, Carton, you bastard. One day there will be a reckoning. You will pray to be back in that tumbril.
The Cuban embargo has been a stupid idea since it's inception. The Wall fell in Germany because East Germans could see how much better off their peers were in the west. The embargo has been a waste of our resources.
Cool story and cool song, G. I can see that right in rotation with bands like The Smithereens, Midnight Oil, Del Amitri, etc. Hell, that sounds like half of Austin in the '80s.
Harper’s has been on a great run of journalism and this profile of “agentic” people and the overlap with AI is depressing but essential. https://harpers.org/archive/2026/03/childs-play-sam-kriss-ai-startup-roy-lee/ All of the people profiled are loathsome, all of them share a single thread: unity in their efforts to accomplish things via shortcut and cheating. There is a lot of overlap here with the general direction of the country and a huge swathe of its emerging elites: only outcome and status matters, cheating to get there simply shows you are “smarter,” the solution to everything is a tool or system and not mastery, girls are mysterious and scary. In short, we are slowly becoming ruled by a class of people who like the idea of wooing a lovely young woman via AI prompts flickered onto a pair of glasses.
Plus it’s been political since Cody Campbell, a governor appointed regent, decided to use his position and money to influence CFB through his relationship with the president. And the elected governor of Louisiana got very involved in a coaching change.
I was half paying attention this morning to an ABC News report on the SC ruling. Had to rewind to make sure I caught how the ending (paraphrased): "The ruling did not address how the money might be paid back to the countries who paid them"
This is one of the more amusing things to have to take up with MAGAts about Trump's trial in NYC. Yes, they fucking hate him there. And it has less to do with politics than the MAGA wants to believe. He made an ass of himself in NYC long before he went into politics and those are his peers. Jury selection is intended to weed out the overly biased, but not to overcome whatever natural bias those peers may have. The magic words for any potential juror are "Yes, I hate his fucking guts, but I will put that aside, listen to the evidence and give him a fair trial." As long as you can say that with a pretty straight face, you survive a challenge for cause.
And, you have a sports commentator who already had a thread on here discussing his takes. Who decides, out of nowhere and apropos of what exactly, to have an highly divisive political figure on his show. And we're not supposed to talk about it because fee fees or something?
