I don't get the Harsin love on this board.  I expect him to have about the same success that Gus had.

I'm really not sure anyone on the market was going to out perform Gus.   Auburn's thought that they are going to be Alabama with a new coach is a bit Aggy.   Bama had multiple 5* QBs sitting on the bench while Auburn was scouring the transfer market.    I don't think they have the patience for the 2-3 massive recruiting classes they'll need to get that jump out of 4 loss seasons to 2-3 loss seasons.   They've had five 10 win seasons in 20 years, and Gus had 2.   Bama has had 15 in that time.

I like Harsin a lot but am not crushed to have him off the market. Unless the alternative is more Turtleman, in which case I'm despondent.

He was one of the first to really push HUNH and use long-abandoned running concepts in the spread framework. It was brilliant, devastating, and very hard to defend. And then everybody else started doing it. And that ate up a lot of his real estate, because his system thrived on the Nick Marshalls of the world: run-first QBs who were "okay" accurate, and didn't really need to make reads. Well, now everybody recruits those guys, and Malzahn really cannot develop, or even utilize, traditional QBs. I mean, Auburn was mediocre with Jarrett Stidham, who's probably going to start in the NFL.

It was a devastating offense with Cam Newton, the human bulldozer that could also throw 60 yard ropes to take the top off of the defense.  The Nick Marshall offense was the closest he came to replicating it.  I told all of my Auburn buddies when they got Stidham what a great QB they had picked up.  Turned out he wasn't much good as the first running option and that cratered the rest of the offense.

Sounds like some other coaches offense I have watched too much of lately.

Don't worry, guys. We'll hire Harsin in 3-4 years after the Tom Herman replacement doesn't work out!

What kind of offense does Harsin run? I wonder if Aubs is in for a complete retooling or will they hit the ground running? I'm guessing more than likely Auburn can expect to end at the bottom of the SEC West most likely, as even Arky has looked good this year even in its losses, and the Miss schools will likely take the next step in Year 2 of their corching regimes.

Auburn probably averages out at 8-4 in the next three seasons; they could have gotten the same or better with Gus and potentially more in some years.

huge mistake by Harsin

I would imagine that the heat is actually on him somewhat at Boise and outside of Peterson Boise made their way with coaches leaving them....so they will probably be OK......but those coaches have not come close to living up to their expectations at their new jobs including Peterson

I don't think Harsin has the chops or the connections to recruit well there either

plus Harsin is the one pushing Boise to leave the MWC presumably to the AAC which would probably be a giant mistake for them and there are interweb rumors (admittedly from moron sources right now) that hint it really might happen

Harsin would have been much better off waiting out a PAC 12 job where he has much more name recognition and where he has the recruiting connections and most importantly where he would have much longer job stability if only by a couple of years......but the extra year or two at Boise and that extra year or two at some PAC 12 school would probably total out to a lot more head coaching money vs 2.5 to 3 years at Auburn

If he can milk them for a huge Gus-like buyout, then who cares.  Move back to Boise and fly fish to your hearts content.

Fuckup on Harsin's part.  It's maybe one of the worst big time college football jobs.  They have huge expectations on par with schools like us and Saban is sitting 150 miles away.  As long as Nick is there that is a job you take at massive peril to your career.

On the plus side he is getting a guaranteed 30M or whatever it ends up being.

Doubt he was ever seriously in play, but imagine trying to dictate Brent fucking Venables' defensive staff.

What is Venables waiting on? Is he ever going to be a coach?

Granted, Auburn is a bad example but he’s had opportunities.

Edit: nvm saw replies about this after

You are correct but if the money is good and guaranteed, then you have to take that coming from Boise.  They play Bama, LSU, and UGA every year then throw in Aggy, Arky, and Ole Miss, where one of those will likely beat them.  Factor in a decent non con opponent and they're not winning nearly enough to appease their car lot owning boosters.

I think it is a solid hire.  Cracks me up how miserably wrong all of the supposed insiders were.  Of course it won’t but a LOT of people should clue in that what is reported by websites is just speculative bullshit.  This is very true at Texas as well.

He's been consistently successful. Not quite peak Petersen, but really good for Boise.

The trouble is, a lot like Petersen, he's a bit of a grump with no time for politics but is good-hearted at his core, which feels like a TERRIBLE fit with the Auburn boosters and admin.

Harsin will be a consistent 9 game winner which isn’t good enough for those Boosters and fan base. He’ll make some good money and will be back coaching Boise St again in 2025.

And he will lose games they have no business losing. He's tom herman 2.0. But he will have 25 million or so in the bank after working 3 years.

This is as good as Auburn was gonna do. I’m quite surprised that Harsin took the job, Boise is not at all a bad place to wait for a really great job to open.  If the money is guaranteed, though, he can put in four years and then quit work and leave his grandkids set for life.

he was ranked 3 seasons out of 6 at UW only one in the top 10

he was ranked 6 seasons out of 8 at Boise with 4 in the top 10 including a #4 just like his highest ranking at UW

I think UW rightly or wrongly was expecting more all the more so with the massive instability in his division in the PAC 12 and it looked like he was fading pretty quickly

Harsin will kill it there. I do not get the negativity on this hire. His motion offense and trickeration is exactly what AU needs to deal with the superior defenses they face, he should attract superior skill players.
