It's Thanksgiving, and on this day I give thanks that the people of the country voted to take out the trash.
  2. Sipping my coffee, about to take the turkey out of the brine and fire up some Bloody Mary’s. Hope you all can find some peace today. I appreciate you this year more than ever.
  3. Opened the bar at 3 for the lonely people like me. Already had three guys come in to escape their families
  4. 15 minutes? Did you start the timer before you Brushed your teeth? look at Mr Porn Star over here with the 1/4 of an hour humble brag.
  5. This is MILs way of fending off impending poverty through paper towel conservation - in spite of a very large net worth and an annual income of which she only spends about 30%. When I got here she was ironing used aluminum foil; smoothing it enough to tent the turkey when necessary. I’m afraid to go see if the toilet paper rolls have also been cut in half.
  6. Says something about how far Europe’s come that they can’t do mass graves right anymore
  7. I suppose we should be thankful that they're at least not denying the Holocaust.
  8. Lol wtf. She has to be a distraction so they can smuggle art out of the White House or something.
  9. I got shithammered last night at dinner. But good news, the cranberry sauce came put of its mold this AM and turkey is in the oven.
  10. Probably the biggest kick in the teeth from Covid, aside from all the dying of course, is the lack of quality entries in this thread as the gatherings have all been down sized.
  11. Let's see... a year subscription to not one but two dating sites, a bass and an amp (decided at 2am I was going to learn to play), and a car horn that played La Cucaracha... just off the top of my head.
  12. From a buddy of mine. He smoked a perfect medium rare tenderloin for the feast. His in laws insisted on shoe leather for their portions.
  13. Was not in a turkey mood this year, so went with a herb-crusted dry aged prime rib Spread: prime rib, double garlic herbed mashed potatoes, green chile corn pudding, gruyere popovers Dessert: black bottom bourbon pecan pie, chocolate peanut butter pie
  14. Sister is doing the Turkey. I did the double-smoked ham on the BGE. Injected with maple syrup for 24 hours in fridge. Smoked for five hours at 250. Brown sugar and honey glazed for the last hour of the smoke. Mrs. Tailgate is doing the classic green bean casserole. Happy Turkey (and ham) day you crazy mofos.
  15. From my crash course in legal studies at the feet of Trump’s Dream Team I have learned you don’t introduce any evidence until you get to the appellate court
  16. There's a certain privilege in being able to just "not talk politics" during a family holiday gathering. I'm in a biracial marriage and just avoiding the political talk isn't really an option when the leader of one side is racist and supports and agrees with people who think my wife is less human or less worthy because she isn't white. Prior to the election, I had a long talk with my mom about Trump's racism and support for white supremacy. To keep it short, it didn't go well, she still voted for him, and we will not be spending any holidays with my family for the foreseeable future.
  17. excuse me sir, We have been made aware that its some sort of food holiday... we request to inspect your plate.....
  18. I don’t think my mother was very happy with me today. ”Why don’t you go out on the patio and hang out with your dad (and sister’s FIL)? ”Because I don’t attend Klan meetings.”
  19. My plate and my 8 yo’s plate who eats the bare minimum to get dessert.
  20. Posted this in the other thread, but I’ve had like 8 of them so think they’re worth a repost...
  21. Neighbor was given this little dinged up guitar for his boy, so I cleaned it up and restrung it for him. Neck is straight as an arrow and the electronics don’t make any noise. Should be a great little starter.
  22. Only thing we’re eating until this evening are these Bacon Jalapeño Deviled Eggs
  23. I'm pretty excited. Allow me to get sentimental. I live within about a half hour of my parents and 15 minutes from my in laws. We have kids of course - 8 and 11. I'm like most guys I know in my demographic - can only stand so much family fun. I enjoy Thanksgiving and Christmas but come about 5 pm I'm ready to go home, take a nap, drink and watch football. This year I'm not taking any of that time for granted. We have not seen my parents since June. They are being ultra ULTRA cautious as my mom has COPD. I'm talking that they see no one other than my sister, who also sees no one. I don't even think they've been in a store since March. Once my in laws returned from wintering in Arizona, and we decided on a small circle for our kids to play with, my parents were not open to that level of risk. We agreed to have all parties self quarantine for 14 days so that we can get together. My parents are giddy as are the kids. We probably won't be able to see them again until the Spring or when this crap is finally over. I will be smoking the bird in the driveway as per usual. Also some homemade hot link. Mom is doing the rest - sausage stuffing, rice with lamb, fresh rolls, pasta, salad and apple pie. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
  24. You guys are lucky. I’ve never seen ISU lose in this shop. I might just crash it for that reason alone. Round 1 off to a good start. Ribeye with sautéed shrooms and onions, stuffing muffins, roast vegetable medley (Brussels sprouts, asparagus, fancy carrots). Bourbon barrel aged Cab. Not a big wine guy, but it worked well with the meal. Bourbon notes were mild. Pecan pie not pictured. Not sure what the game meal will be now. Might just be my Bloody Mary garnishes.
  25. He’s a champion snoozer. He can be up and barking with his feet on the door in about .5 seconds too.
  26. Happy Thanksgiving, you filthy animals.
  27. If this is the dumb question thread, what is the rest of Surly for?
  28. So don't feel bad if you only botched cooking the turkey today. NFL films explanatory video: https://www.vikings.com/video/surprise-surprise-the-runaway-balloon-16107027 Don't miss the ending, with a similar incident at the Super Bowl.
