What is this for? A full time stocker, or checker?
Many of people don’t even know where or how to start looking for work. Yes, there is a lot of “I’m too good for that” out there. But none of that changes the fact that you don’t understand the percentages and reality of how many people are poor and have little to no shot of changing that. Which is literally the mindset that led to the French Revolution.
the average cost of rent in an apt in Houston is 1300. That’s the AVERAGE, which includes all the truly bad shit holes, of which there are MANY in Houston. 55k, cut off 20% for taxes, that’s 44k. Minus 15,600 for rent that’s 27,400. Let’s assume the person owns a shit box car, so no car payment, but let’s say 100 a month for insurance, let’s say 200 a month in gas, 300 in other bills (electric, tv services, internet). Let’s say they drink tap water and eat ramen, so I’ll generously say 150 a month in groceries. That’s 9k a year, so 18,400 left. Let’s hope there’s no other expenses, no doctor visits, no car repairs, and certainly no hope of having or caring for children, because childcare is the same as rent, which would knock your remaining dollars down to 2800 a year, not including feeding and clothing. And god forbid ever buy a new used-car.
I don’t know about you, but that “opportunity” looks like a job that can feed you, but has little chance of even allowing you to enjoy much of your life, definitely no chance to reasonably dream for a better one.
A VCR salesman in the 80s could support a family, mortgage, cars and still afford to take the family on a vacation every year. Today a teacher in Texas is literally what I described above.
this creates the really bad hopelessness other posters have referenced in the youth. Anecdotally, I’m here at Lost Pines with my family this weekend. It is expensive, and we aren’t skipping anything we want based on price, but the level of disregard for money here is astonishing….by the people that have it. 600 bucks last I checked for people to rent a cabana, for 4 hours, so they can sit by the lazy river in a covered area, with a tv they aren’t watching, to play on their phones and not talk to their family. I floated by them dozens of times on Friday and Saturday. Those kids will grow up thinking that’s normal. THAT IS NOT WHAT IS NORMAL TO 98% OF THE WORLD. And there’s 1500 people here right now. And every resort in Texas, probably.
