  6. Ukraine Shoots Down Russian Su-25 Jet in MANPADS Strike Ukrainian forces shot down and destroyed a Russian Su-25 ground attack aircraft in the eastern Donetsk region, Kyiv's military said on Wednesday. "Ukrainian warriors from the 28th Mechanized Brigade shot down a Russian Su-25 plane in the Kramatorsk direction. Bravo!" Ukraine's defense ministry said in a statement posted to social media. Newsweek contacted the Russian defense ministry by email for comment. The Context Russia's Air Force has suffered extensive losses since the start of Putin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. What We Know The country's Khortytsia group of forces operating in Donetsk said anti-aircraft units of the 28th Separate Mechanized Brigade shot down the jet using a Man-Portable Air-Defense System (MANPADS). The jet "was trying to fire at the positions of units of the Defense Forces," it said in a statement on Telegram. "Another Russian Su-25 burns out in the steppes of the Ukrainian Donbas," the Khortytsia group of forces said, referring to an area that comprises Ukraine's occupied Donetsk and Luhansk regions. "As of today, Russian assault aviation has one less aircraft. Its wreckage now decorates the Donetsk landscape." The 28th Separate Mechanized Brigade shared footage on Telegram that purportedly shows the moment the Su-25 was shot down in Donetsk. "The fate of the crew is still unknown," it said. Dutch open-source intelligence defense analysis website Oryx has visually confirmed that 112 Russian aircraft have been destroyed and 15 damaged since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine. Oryx has also visually confirmed that 94 Ukrainian aircraft have been destroyed since the beginning of the war, with three damaged and one captured. The General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces said in an update on Wednesday that Moscow had lost 368 aircraft since Russia launched its full-scale invasion. Newsweek couldn't independently verify Kyiv's figures. What's Next? The Russian Su-25 jet was downed in the Donbas area, which faces constant shelling. The Kremlin has been pushing for the total capture of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions since Russia's initial invasion of eastern Ukraine in 2014, and it continues to make gains in these areas. Russia is focusing much of its manpower on seizing the city of Pokrovsk, a key logistical hub for Ukrainian forces in the area.
  7. College football is back for real! Time to lock in. Thursday games: A fun little appetizer slate here North Dakota State @ Colorado (8/7 ESPN) We all know why we're here. Deion might lose to an FCS school and we can all laugh and laugh at the loud asshole. This isn't NDSU's best recent team by any stretch, but Colorado is a mess. North Carolina @ Minnesota (8/7 Fox) Mack rows the boat up to Minneapolis to visit PJ Fleck. Fun coaches, but not particularly exciting teams this year. UNC still might be a player in the ACC by virtue of a layup schedule. Coastal Carolina @ Jacksonville State (8/7 CBSSN) A sneaky-watchable mid major matchup when the other two games are on commercial. RichRod's done surprisingly well at JSU. Friday games: A couple of "hey, it's football" games with passing interest for Texas fans Florida Atlantic @ Michigan State (7/6 Big Ten Network) Who doesn't want to watch Tom Herman have a very bad time in East Lansing? Jonathan Smith makes his head coach debut for Sparty after doing a really excellent job at his alma mater, Oregon State. Temple @ Oklahoma (7/6 ESPN) Hopefully this is competitive, and Sooner fans finally start having the unfamiliar feeling that they've hired a bad football coach. TCU @ Stanford (10:30/9:30 ESPN) Frogs on The Farm. TCU will probably win going away as the Transfer Portal and Stanford admissions are not friends, but it's a suitably random heir to the Pac-12 After Dark heritage. Saturday games: Hell yeah, this is the good stuff. Starting with... Clemson vs. Georgia @ Atlanta (12/11 ABC) Dabo's probably going to get pantsed on live television, but this is an prestige matchup, in a semi-neutral site close to both campuses. Penn State @ West Virginia (12/11 FOX) Backyard Brawl is BACK. If Clemson/Georgia is a prestige drama, this is soap opera football. Drama, hatred, pedophilia, burning couches. Hopefully James Franklin's Charmin-soft side comes out and lets WVU punch Penn State in the face in Morgantown. EDIT: Whoops wrong Pennsylvania Appalachian school for that rivalry, so it's not Backyard Brawl but I'll leave it there to annoy @PittsburghTiger. Virginia Tech @ Vanderbilt (12/11 ESPN) Because you need something to watch when the other two are on a break. VaTech is a popular pick for the ACC title this year. Can they show why in Week One? - Colorado State @ Texas (3:30/2:30 ESPN) Needs no introduction on this board. Jay Norvell seemed like a really good dude despite his Sooner past when he was at UT, and CSU runs a competent Air Raid that should be a nice warmup for the Longhorn secondary. Miami @ Florida (3:30/2:30 ABC) The most likely chaos game of the day. Lots of unevenly distributed talent. Head coaches that have about five brain cells between them. In-state Florida rivalry. Miami wants to prove they can win the ACC. Florida knows that if they lose here it only gets harder with their schedule from hell. If they're both on break, check out Boise State @ Georgia Southern (fun, random G5 matchup on ESPNU) or Miami of Ohio at Northwestern on BTN (NWU will be playing on their practice field on Lake Michigan. Stunning setting, extremely rickety looking bleachers). - UNLV @ Houston (7/6 FS1) Willie Fritz can coach, but Houston's roster is pure dogshit. UNLV is a threat here in what's shaping up to be a very decent year for them under Barry Odom. Fresno State @ Michigan (7:30/6:30 NBC) Much like us, Michigan is starting off with a creditable MWC team. Unlike us, Michigan is in flux and needs this game to settle their roster and coaching in before our matchup. They need to play starters and use their real playbook, we could learn a lot here. Notre Dame @ Texas A&M (7:30/6:30 ESPN) Two extraordinarily similar teams. Wizard DCs as unproven HCs. Mobile, fragile QBs. Bad WRs. Questionable OLs. Ferocious defenses (Aggie LBs and secondary not included). The better team is visiting, take the under. Wyoming @ Arizona State (10:30/9:30 FS1) Finish the day with some Big 12 After Dark action. Sunday/Monday games: Happy holiday weekend! LSU vs. USC @ Las Vegas (7:30/6:30 Sunday ABC) I honestly don't know what to expect out of either of these teams. High delta matchup between big brand schools. Boston College @ Florida State (7:30/6:30 Monday ESPN) A little Monday Night Football action. Can FSU rebound after the heartbreaker in Dublin? Can DJU complete a forward pass? Will it matter when BOB is on the opposing sideline? Let's fucking do this.

  10. Also cool how they each have separate threads on Surly about how much they fucking suck.
  11. The craziest part about the Kursk offensive is that with the Ukrainians over the border, there is now little to limit their special operations forces from taking Russian-marked equipment and heading east out into the deep forests SE of Moscow and setting up a drone launch point in the middle of nowhere and attack other points deep in Russia proper. Take a few Russian ZIL131s and pack them up with the components for 6 large drones and take off. Once the mission is done, leave and head back to home. If the Russians find it, then go a different region next time. If not, do it again... Yes, you are putting your spec ops guys at risk with deep behind the lines missions, but it would be worth it just to hit other targets deep into Russia to further instill the idea that no one is safe...
  12. So if Russia is aggy, is Belarus Blinn?
  13. Use the floats from the Macy's parade. That will really freak them out. Imagine these fuckers coming at you. Merica!
  14. Goddamnit I literally just snipped this same image off of CNN's main page... "Trump indicted, here's how that's bad for Kamala" It's stuff like this that makes the notion of the "liberal" media almost the ultimate hypocrisy.

  17. Wakanda, fine country beautiful country we love Wakanda and the people love me there. Big Wakandans, Strong Wakandans, they come up to me, tears streeeaming over their facial tattoos-- that's what they do there, put these facial tattoos, like how they ID you, you don't need a wallet or a driver's license, the cop pulls you over, very courteous, they just take a sec to look at your facial tattoos, boom, "Oh hi, Mr. Adelelewakaboomboom, could you please please just slow it down a tad, we have baby elephants on their way to school here." Very courteous. We could learn from my fine Wakandan supporters. Should Wakanda be a state? I don't know. Maybe yes, maybe no, maybe we'll see. I actually think they'd be on the losing end of things, forced to associate with some of our Blue State riff-raff. I'd hate that. Those facial tattoos, you know I'm not impressed with ethnic types but hey. WAKANDA WE LOVE YOOOOU.
  18. Drones blowing up orcs - the last two are definitely gruesome
  19. According to sources, the restrictions were imposed at request of China. If true, seems very significant. https://united24media.com/latest-news/uae-banks-block-russian-transactions-for-chinese-electronics-russian-media-reports-1971 Banks in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have been rejecting transactions from Russian companies seeking electronic components and consumer electronics from China since early August, according to pro-Kremlin outlet Kommersant on August 28. The reported reason for this is the risk of secondary sanctions, the outlet claimed. Kommersant's sources, who remain unnamed, indicate that Russian firms had been using UAE-based entities to transfer funds to China for goods to be shipped directly to Russia. Now, transactions for products that do not pass through the Gulf country are being blocked, the outlet stated. According to these sources, the restrictions were imposed at the initiative of China. Last week, the US introduced a new set of sanctions targeting Chinese and Russian companies due to their support for Moscow's aggression. In response, Chinese institutions have begun reducing their business dealings with Russia to avoid or mitigate the impact of these trade restrictions. Notably, several major Chinese banks have started blocking transactions for electronics due to concerns over secondary sanctions. Most recently, in June, the Russian branch of the Chinese state-run Bank of China ceased accepting payments from Russian banks. Western countries have also reportedly increased pressure on the UAE to prevent Russian entities from circumventing sanctions. The UAE is believed to be a key conduit for sanctioned dual-use goods, such as electronics, being sent to Russia. Throughout Russia's full-scale war, the UAE has maintained economic and cultural ties with Russia but has also forged new trade agreements with Ukraine.
  20. I am strongly considering making this a new reaction.
