  1. He's going to be slow to respond. He turned down a federal grant that would have allowed Surly to increase the timing of alerts when a user gets tagged in a post. That's not political. It's just facts.
  2. We lost everything in the fires in January. FEMA definitely helps in the immediate aftermath. Just stick with them. They will follow through, it just takes time. All the agencies that are meant to help right now are dealing with shakeups. SBA Disaster loans are HUGE for people that need to rebuild/relocate. You can get loans to help at 2.56% over 30 years. Can't stress how helpful that will be for the recovery. And yes you can use it to relocate. Obviously, now is the time to find those that are missing and make sure everyone's immediate needs are met. But if you have friends dealing with the loss of a home, share this site with them: https://uphelp.org/ I know flood insurance is treated differently than other calamities, but that website will be one of the most helpful things you could share over the next 2 years for them. It has step-by-step roadmaps for recovery. It's a non-profit run by survivors of disasters. Also, offer to babysit their kids for free while they talk with their spouses about what the fuck they're going to do. Recovery is like having another full time job.
  3. Wasn't just the boy counselors at La Junta that did such a great job, these two girl counselors are not getting enough love... And our fellow Bomberos to the south of us...
  4. Early July straw poll Over/under final class rank: 5.5 Pos rep this post if you think under (i.e., top 5 class). Neg if you think over (i.e., 6th or worse). Can’t rep my own post but for the record I’ll take the under.
  5. Final Update: Finally, we're done here! Okay, system is still out there but weakened. This low pressure system coming in from the coast is bumping it out. Now this low has its own rain-making capabilites and therefore chances of "normal" July afternoon storms is pretty good, but coverage will be more scattered. The CTX atmosphere is still pretty humid so there's a lot of fuel, but the triggering mechanism not so intense. In other words we're almost back to normal. July will set in after Wednesday - trending sunnier and hotter - and drier. However all the tons of water fallen on our ground will probably keep 100's away for at least another week if not more. So one small plus on this otherwise awful episode is that we'll be over 1 1/2 months without a triple-digit day (I hear Aug and Sept saying, "hold my beer" but it's possible that this year could be a little different - there hasn't been a really strong high parking over us for weeks on end, even back in May with those 100's... the high moved in and out pretty quickly. (There, I just jinxed it, 100 degree days comin' up!). Epilogue - I try to post here especially when weather is critical to calm nerves and hopefully put at ease by giving perspective and "what's going on" and "what's next?". I guess I've had a talent for weather (people have told me so since I was kid), and I actually did intern at NASA for a time plotting hurricane info when I was 15. I was going to go into either astronomy or meteorology as a career, then I entered both programs in college - and promptly found out that there were no chicks (definitely not the case now as you guys frequently have posted here), and a buncha nerds which closely resembled the seating section that Pinto and Flounder were invited to sit in at the Omega House. Anyway I've always liked the sky, be it immediate (meteorology) or farther out (astronomy). If I can help calm nerves and assuage fears during weather crises I think I owe it to "whomever" to use that talent and I think that's important. Can't always be correct, but people doing this do their best. Beyond this I do here and there glance at this thread on the site; otherwise just send me a PM or one of those tag things and I'll check it out. Meanwhile I can hope that the grieving period and cleanup/rebuilding of these devastated areas - and lives - can proceed with grace and hope. Late!
  6. Holy shit what a meltdown. I’m only going say this once and I’m sure it won’t make a difference, but the problem with daily Texan comes down to the fact that sane people post relevant, pertinent facts that are in context, and then the window lickers scream “no cloakroom!!!” Sane people explain how something is reasonable and important to the conversation at hand, and then there is a bunch of posts going back-and-forth with a total thread derailment that gets blamed on the wrong people. It’s basically letting your toddler control the house. But hey, it’s their house.
  7. The Internet broke this country. "Oh, I see you are interested in loony f'n conspiracy theories ....let me serve you hundreds more so you click and make me rich"
  8. Blakely McCrory found That makes the 3rd confirmed dead that my wife and I have a personal connection to. There are at least 2 more that are still out there. 2 campers and a mother of a friend(deceased), a counselor, a peer from UT.. still missing AFAIK...and who knows how many more will get added to the list. As someone without kids, I am not handling this well, I can't imagine what those of you with kids are going through.
  9. “This is not the time to make things political” can almost always be interpreted as “I’m worried this will hurt me politically.”
  10. They didn't apply for the grant until after Obama left office, so they missed the $1M attached to that original emergency declaration. Later when they applied in 2017 once it was a different president, the money wasn't there. They were also given $5.4 million in 2021 - just dropped into their city bank account by the federal government for emergency preparation via ARPA, and they instead elected to build sidewalks and upgrade their cop, firefighter, and EMS radio system. I linked the meeting transcripts a few pages ago where they made these decisions.
  11. In the DTs thread, there's a perfect encapsulation of the lunacy of the DTs, no CR! phenomenon. It's ok to call out one side with a collection of screenshots of posts from complete randos but it's CR! to post the conversation between those county officials who turned down a federal grant for a warning system that would've prevented most of the deaths because Obama. If they'd had a better reason for not having it built, like county is broke or whatever, then it would be non-political to criticize those officials. Since those idiots are on record refusing a free system for the dumbest possible reason, because Obama, it's therefore political and DTs crybabies must be shielded from it.
  12. The stories are endless. Here is just one of those coming across my social media feeds:
  13. Thing is, up until now in this moment, I think we all knew we are at war. At war against ignorance, apathy, greed, you name the fucking sin and the Establishment elite (GOP) not only commits it but telegraphs it beforehand by accusing YOU of it. All accusations are a confession is 110% accurate. We all know this. War against science, against reason, against goddamned slap you in the face facts. But until now the casualties were others. The browns, the blacks, the queers, the “well they must have done something to deserve it whether it was this or not” kinda thing. Now we have dead innocent little white kids. I am truly heartbroken and sad about what happened to every victim in this flood and their families. IF fucking ONLY our fellow so called fucking citizens could feel the same way about everyone else who suffers similarly. fat fucking chance.
  14. This is a good link to follow for those being reunited with their missing family pets. The link is also posting found pets and missing pets.
  15. Meanwhile, my idiot BIL is posting on Facebook “Cloud seating has GOT to stop!” And that’s exactly how every politician is going to escape accountability. And it’s exactly why the GQP cultivates that type of stupidity. if any of you think any positive change is going to come from this disaster, you’re very sadly mistaken.

If you all wanna know why we aren't getting out of this nosedive anytime soon just look at all the DT folks who go insane at the hint of CR mentions anywhere but this forum. When pretty much everything is affected by politics right now. And I'm pretty sure not a single member here has admitted to voting for Dotard. No sir, they just happen to hate hearing about politics. Until people have this shit shoved in their face, we have zero chance. Maybe it's not so civil, but anyone worried about civility these days has their head so far up their ass they need an actual beating to dislodge.
  17. If the history of MAGA voters is any indication, none of this will fucking matter when it comes time to vote
  18. As I've said before about him as well as Finley - Fuck him, his dad, and I hope to be able to laugh at his decision in the future.
  19. Greta (the Mystic Camper who is the niece of my younger cousin’s best friend) the girl I posted we had been looking for has sadly been found deceased. I have no more words. I’m gutted. Hugs to all of y’all. Fuck.
  20. The friend's mother that I mentioned a few posts back, is the Mollie from that story. His dad wrote/posted that. I can't imagine the survivor's guilt he will feel RIP Mollie Schaffer
  21. You did a lot of lobbying for this kind of post being separated from the rain threads, and well, this is the thread for discussing the disaster, who to blame, etc, and comment on it. So as tiresome and hyperbolic as the guy is about this shit, he's posting in the right place. It's tiresome, because on some level, he's right and we know it and don't like hearing it spelled out over and over and over again.

Here’s what I hate about this: there is a core truth to what she’s saying. There are a lot of able-bodied Americans on Medicaid, but the vast majority, about 2/3, are working, often for very large employers whose labor costs are subsidized by the taxpayer. That is a problem. My opinion is and has been for a long time that we should tax companies that employ more than 25 people dollar for dollar on the public assistance provided to their employees. But even if we did, WE WOULD STILL NEED IMMIGRANT LABOR
  23. We are 2-3 degrees of separation from 5 of the Camp Mystic kids and counselors. Our friend, whose granddaughter is still unaccounted, for said that one of the things they have been prepped for is that many will be receiving letters from their daughters that were mailed out July 3. Ugh.
  24. Late 70s/ early 80s Astroworld was the shit. Season pass was about $30-35 if memory serves, one kid's parents would drop off in the morning and another kid's parents would pick up at closing time. Zero communication in between, a full day of shenanigans, maybe a Cheap Trick or Go Gos concert and everyone got home safe. Simpler times.
  25. I’ve been avoiding posting since trying to find information about my many friends’ little girls. There are posts on social media that name several girls that haven’t been in the news but I know are part of this tragedy. It looks like the number is 36 Mystic campers and counselors. Not to mention the countless others camping, in river cabins etc. This is going to affect so many families and communities for generations. 💔💔💔 As far as positive news, there are a bunch of La Junta counselors that are absolute heroes. Stories will come out. Miraculous that there weren’t fatalities there.
  26. That's coach Sark in the middle.
  27. I know you disagree but when tragedy strikes it should be fair to discuss how government actions, priorities, funding decisions, and policies affect the governed. Current events (like bombing Iran) are inseparable from politics. Sorry for your fee fees
  28. https://www.cnn.com/2025/07/07/us/texas-floods-warning-system-invs Behind the scenes, NWS officials were communicating with local emergency managers in the affected region over an internal messaging platform. Typically, the media is expected to treat messages from this platform as off-the-record, but a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration official granted CNN permission to report general information about the Texas disaster from the platform. The messages show that after initial briefings on the afternoon of Thursday, July 3, about the potential of heavy rains to come, emergency managers from some counties in the region were posting on the system, querying forecasters about what to expect. Those messages picked up in pace as the flooding began in the early hours of July 4. But no emergency manager from Kerr County participated in those discussions on the messaging platform. It’s unclear whether officials were reviewing the information being shared.
  29. Dropped that brisket and smoked corn on the cob off in Boerne for my son-in-law and his DPS recovery team pals. That hotel parking lot looked like the big DPS Death Star HQ on Lamar. Like an elephant grave yard of black and white SUV cruisers. Anyway, I guess the smoker gods were with me today because this text from him just came though on my drive back to Canyon Lake...
  30. This shit is cracking me the fuck up. All these MAGA dorks were so hyped up to find out all the juicy, top secret, non-existent details behind some Deep State sex trafficking conspiracy, only to be completely deflated. I anxiously await Bondi or Patel making the following announcements in the coming weeks: - Turns out there is no sex dungeon under that pizza joint. - UFOs really are just weather balloons. - We looked into it, and there aren’t all that many trans athletes out there, like hardly any at all. - The total amount Soros paid illegal immigrant caravans is $0. - Oh also: there were no illegal immigrant caravans. - They are technically chemical trails. It’s just that the chemical is H2O. - Vaccines work, really well. …but not at 5G; they can’t do that shit at all. - JFK Jr. is dead. - Biden legit won in 2020. - There were no FBI or Antifa provocateurs on January 6. It was just a mob of stupid MAGA assholes.
  31. The problem is the right wing have deemed everything that could possibly challenge their worldview as “political”. Weather, science, people being gay, discrimination, history, and on and on. The orangeshitbag took it to infinity. Imagine if we tried to tackle the ozone crisis today instead of the late 90s. Zero chance it would be addressed in today’s idiotverse. Hell even back then, shitheels like Rush Limbaugh were mocking the ozone and the steps being taken to address it, but his microphone paled in comparison to the moron magaphones of today.
  32. The Cuidad Acuna fast water dudes were metal. They got here at around 2pm on the fourth. I wasn’t able to get a shirt, but those dudes showed the fuck up.
  33. We can't talk about it now. We have to wait until the news cycle moves on to the next thing to make sure that nothing is actually done to prevent future tragedies like it. We'll just sit around and pray real hard until that happens.
  34. Good question. I would also like to know how MAGA enthusiasts are coping with what is surely their first ever bout of cognitive dissonance.
  35. Personally, I like the idea of Bill Burr in government much more than I do Bill Barr in government.
  36. Heartbreaking. I know what it’s like to lose a grandchild unexpectedly. One never gets over the gut wrenching feelings..
  37. HahahahHahahahahahah
  38. If we ever needed a cry emoji, this is it. I think I’m done here for awhile. It’s too much. Peace and love to all those affected.
