  1. They've started calling Smith Darker Livingstone.

Well here’s my anecdote. I got let go from my job at a tech company that I’ve worked at for 10 years this morning. Oh well.
  3. I remember the first time I yelled "BREAK HIS FUCKING NECK!" at a TX/OU game and an older woman in Texas gear looked at me with a horrified look on her face. Then I said "well I hope he recovers and has a good life but just can't play football anymore" and she just nodded in a way that indicated okay that's acceptable.
  4. Washington, from the very first State of the Union Jefferson, in a letter to Edward Tiffin, a physician who became the first governor of Ohio, on the importance of the arts and sciences to developing and maintaining a free society (especially relevant to what is happening in America currently) And finally Madison who, along with Jefferson, is the founding father who aligns most closely with “borderline libertarian,” in Federalist 62 CPB and PBS / NPR embody one of the core aspirations of the founders of our country, and provide infrastructure critical for carrying it out. Gutting and dismantling them are direct attacks on our way of life
  5. Fuck this shit. Fuck the DT posters that voted for this shit.
  6. over 130 million people watch pbs every year 86 million american children have watched sesame street since it's debut in 1969
  7. From the article: "For nearly 60 years, CPB has carried out its Congressional mission to build and sustain a trusted public media system that informs, educates, and serves communities across the country. Through partnerships with local stations and producers, CPB has supported educational content, locally relevant journalism, emergency communications, cultural programming, and essential services for Americans in every community." Now, who would have a vested interest in these things coming to an end? The same people who are also trying to destroy public schools, perhaps?

Six decades of contributing to what was great about America - educational programs, cultural programs, outreach to underserved communities and amplification of voices who were previously ignored. All gone, and now leaving NPR/PBS and their hundreds of member stations to try and figure out a way forward without a coordinating/funding body. Everyone who voted for this and cheers it can go, well, you know. None of this is making us a better country.
  9. @SarkAfterDark here you go.. Practice Report
  10. If he can be something halfway between Alec Pierce and Jordy Nelson, we're cooking with mayonnaise
  11. Ever heard of the library of Congress? Read up on its inception and evolution. A federal government was a brand new concept, and ours was in significant debt from fighting a war against the greatest power on the planet at that time. There wasn’t much money available for government subsidies for anything. Look up the Federal Depository Library Program (1813) and Smithsonian Institution Publications (1846) As our country grew, monetary support for the arts and sciences has grown along with it (at least until now). There are examples everywhere, from the Lewis and Clark expedition through the land grant university programs and federally backed research in agriculture and industry. Government leaders beginning in the 20th century have consistently have felt an obligation to promote the arts as well. It is mind-boggling that in the last 30 years or so such concepts have become partisan issues. Even the Robber Barons knew the importance of private patronage in partnership with government money. What we have today is pathetic and we are on the verge of the biggest brain in history
  12. FYI for those with kids and grandkids who really appreciate the family programming of PBS Kids: PBS Kids will not shut down, but some shows will be cancelled, and the surviving shows will make fewer new episodes, at least for the next couple of years. If you want to see PBS Kids survive, the best thing you can do is become a member of your local PBS station. If you're already a member, raise your donation level if you can.
  13. Imagine being @DalTxHornFan, waking up every day with a room temperature IQ and thinking it'd be super swell if the ol' US of A became a little more like Hungary or Turkey.

  15. because the idea that free markets bring the best solution or even a solution to every problem is fantastical silliness. the government has a role in promoting the public good.
  16. Sadly… more and more people who identify as libertarian in reality and in practice just means they have a high tolerance of authoritarianism to me.
  17. Victories like this make it easy to forget that you voted for a child rapist.

It's one thing for that fat fuck to lie to the cameras from his fat fucking mouth but he's now going to have the number crunchers making shit up and publishing them under the guise of statistics. We're fucking done as a country. And no, this isn't some tipping scale for me, I've been done with this shit from the beginning, but objectively, fucking with actual economic statistics should be a massive red flag even for the staunchest conservative. But they are all worthless, dickless fucking traitors, and prefer outright ministry of information type bullshit. Absolutely fucking pathetic.
  19. A media outlet (that provides media soup to nuts from kids programming to drama and documentaries) that isn't captured by the private sector and/or propaganda machines is a public good just as highways are a public good.
  20. No concept of the "Common Good" these days.
  21. Truth in reporting is one very big reason. Don't be a fucking moron. You're better than this. It's both. Or it was. It's now entirely listener supported. Nixon hated CPB and NPR. That tells you all you need to know.

  26. I'm with you. What would really make this board enjoyable for me is a complete lack of humor and everyone feeling like they're posting on railroad tracks. I think the big problem is a lack of consequences. If we could chop off a finger for violating one of SarkAfterDark's very reasonable guidelines for having the ideal message board, this place would be waaaaaay better.
  27. You don't watch anything on PBS? NPR? KUT? People actually do give a fuck.

  31. 100% THIS Y'all can shit on Jim Crane all fuckin day for the Bagwell/Montero/Abreu clusterfuck but this savage billionaire fuckwad has a BDE personality that compels him to take big swings when the opportunity is there and that's about all you can ask for in an owner of a pro sports team in the Houston market. He is not without criticism, duh, but he has given Astros fans a plethora of great moments to remember and his refusal to stand pat at the trade deadline when his teams are within striking distance of a WS is something we should all salute. This organization under his ownership has consistently given us great shit at the end of July. Let's hope this one turns out with a fucking parade.
  32. Offense did feel like this at times last year.
  33. you don't see a need why the govt might need to subsidized programming for large rural areas where private companies won't because it's not profitable? did you eat paint chips as a kid?
  34. Well, that’s the thing though. Those do benefit them. They’re just too dumb to recognize it.
