Thread's already derailed, so what the fuck... Guy I've recently become quite friendly with has lots of dough. He lives in FL. His daughter lives in the Bay area. She got married last year. He wrote a check for 250,000 for the wedding. Last year. A couple of months ago, she comes home early, and "husband" is balls-deep in a woman 15 years his senior...that he's been fucking for 9 years. Daughter loses her shit, of course. Daughter and Son in law were supposed to join by buddy and his wife on their European vacation, two weeks after she caught him. The wife comes alone and cries the entire time and ruins their vacation. To put the icing on the cake, buddy tells the daughter that when the vacation is over, he needs a week to catch up with work, then he'll fly out to SFO and go with her to meet with divorce lawyers. She sheepishly tells him that a lawyer won't be needed, as the wedding was just a ceremony/charade, and they didn't even have a marriage license. So my buddy pissed away a quarter million so his daughter could cosplay as a bride. He's livid.

Engineering and business majors? I generally agree. Although I could never set up a little political science shop on the corner and make a living, the older I get the more I value the traditional liberal arts education I received at UF. Being required to take sociology and history and psychology and humanities credits with my poli-sci courses - I feel that gave me a better chance to learn critical thinking and to more easily understand when you are being bullshitted in a political situation. Granted, job opportunities were more law school or rental car counter or barista due to that. I remember talking to an engineer neighbor a long time ago about some Charlie Daniels political screed that the neighbor loved. I laughed and asked him if he knew anything about rhetoric or if he knew anything about logical fallacies. I told him he should study rhetoric so he could instantly recognize things in the Charlie Daniels manifesto (that contained several “no true Scotsman”statements, and referenced “wine drinking liberals”, etc.) I told him once you recognize how rhetoric and fallacies were put out there to deceive and manipulate you, you will instantly have a better idea who to trust and what information to discard or what to pursue in a validity search. To be clear, I’m not saying that is the only way to be a critical thinker, or that only people with a liberal arts education are critical thinkers. But it has been my experience that having the skill to solve engineering problems with physics and mathematics (courses I could never pass in 1000 years) does not translate as well to understand when you are being manipulated and grifted by people like Trump. Through no fault of their own - or their education - they are more susceptible to being victims of the type of rhetoric they often fall for. Because they are simply unaware that rhetoric is a system and a skill employed to convince and manipulate people - using specific techniques that have been identified for thousands of years and are still very effective. Even at the high school level there should be mandatory courses on rhetoric to hopefully reduce the number of gullible people falling for what is obvious bullshit - at least obvious bullshit that is readily apparent to a lot of other people.

  26. UPDATE (1:15 pm CT) - A source said Brooks was walking around after the scrimmage and “looked OK.” Notes from the Texas Longhorns first scrimmage of training camp VIP ChipBrown247 AUSTIN, Texas — Here are some notes from the Texas Longhorns' first significant scrimmage of training camp on Saturday. The scrimmage was closed to the public, but Horns247 tracked down a few sources who were able to observe the scrimmage. Here's what those sources said: — Freshman offensive tackle Nick Brooks, who has been working at right tackle in the wake of Andre Cojoe's season-ending injury, left the scrimmage with what appeared to be a right leg injury. UPDATE (1:15 pm CT) - A source said Brooks was walking around after the scrimmage and “looked OK.” — The defense got a lot of push up front with senior defensive end Ethan Burke batting a couple passes. — One source said, "The defensive line is the real deal. There was a lot of pressure on the quarterbacks - so much so that they kind of let it play out sometimes. The front seven dominated." — Arch Manning had a touchdown pass to Ryan Wingo, who had a good showing on Saturday as well as Parker Livingstone. "Arch missed a couple passes high," because he was under pressure, one source said. — Quarterback Trey Owens had a good performance, connecting with Ryan Niblett, Aaron Butler and walk-on Rett Anderson in the passing game. "Owens was sharp with the ball and looked good." — Quarterback "KJ" Karle Lacey scrambled for a TD late in the scrimmage. — All of the team's top four quarterbacks - Manning, Owens, Matthew Caldwell and Lacey - connected on passes with tight ends. One source said the tight ends "were probably the best group - top to bottom - today." —Manning ran with the No. 1 offense. Owens and Caldwell split reps with the No. 2 offense, and Caldwell and Lacey split reps with the No. 3 offense. — Quintrevion Wisner, Christian Clark and CJ Baxter all had at least one impressive run.
  27. We learned that freshman receivers Kaliq Lockett and Michael Terry have been coming on of late. Terry’s rate of improvement seems to be outpacing all of the others. However, it’s important to note he also had the farthest to come since he had never really played the position before, so it’s not like he’s jumped to the front of the line.
  28. Bobby Burton Posted 1 hour ago The first scrimmage of fall camp gets going here in the next couple of hours. Scrimmages last roughly two hours. Under Sark, the team typically starts with special teams (punts and kickoffs) when they’re inside DKR like they will be this morning. Then they typically go 1s vs 2s to start things off before moving to 1s vs 1s and 2s vs 2s, each in multiple eight-play spurts. After that, it’s time for 1s vs 1s and 2s vs 2s. As part of that session, they focus on situational pieces, including red zone before closing with kicking. Again, that’s the “typical” order of operations for a Sark-led training camp scrimmage. But he’s also known to change it up at times to keep things fresh. ** I’m told freshman receivers Kaliq Lockett and Michael Terry have been coming on of late. Terry’s rate of improvement seems to be outpacing all of the others. However, it’s important to note he also had the farthest to come since he had never really played the position before, so it’s not like he’s jumped to the front of the line. Lockett and Daylan McCutcheon have separated themselves somewhat from Jamie Ffrench and Terry. But Texas is said to like all of the freshman pass catchers. Ffrench has a little something special to him, but he may actually end up being a better inside receiver than a true outside one. Lockett’s length has proven to be a real advantage there. ** I need to come back to something I wrote the other day. I am not saying definitively that Matthew Caldwell is now the second string quarterback. I am saying I think he’s the odds-on favorite to be such in Columbus. He is getting to handoffs quicker, has more mobility and is just operating the offense differently than Trey Owens. If it’s a tie ball game or Texas is up by a score or two and Sark needs someone to finish things out, I think Caldwell is likely the best answer at this time. He takes fewer chances, has been in the fire before on the college level, and is the safer pick. Owens certainly has a bigger arm and is more willing and capable of pushing the ball downfield and into tighter windows. So, conversely, if it’s the start of a game, or Texas is down in a game, Sark might lean to Owens simply because of that element. Potentially higher risk but also higher reward. To be clear, I think Texas is lucky to have both. It’s definitely not somehow about me personally rooting for one over the other. Far from it. And it’s certainly not about Sark playing favorites. Caldwell and Owens both have Texas on the front of their jerseys, and that’s all that matters. ** As reported previously, Nick Brooks has moved to right tackle in the wake of Andre Cojoe’s season-ending injury. Nate Kibble is getting heavy work at right guard while Connor Stroh is now getting a lot of work at left guard. The two came into camp flip-flopped, with Kibble on the left and Stroh on the right. ** More coming from the scrimmage later today. Hook’Em! poor @Helobious
