One year ago tonight, as we're already packing up my wife and daughter to send them to a hotel while I planned to man the fort at home with no power and the animals. My wife tells me "x just texted that there's a fire in Eaton Canyon." I sort of shrug and continue to help get stuff put together. Then I hear her scream. I run outside and look up on the hill. It wasn't this yet, but damn, that did NOT look good. "OK, let's get you guys packed and out of here." Fortunately I had made a hotel reservation already just because of the power outage that we were sure was going to last a couple of days. I head back in a grab some bags, and not 5 minutes later look up and see this. Uh, shit. This thing is blowing up. We gotta go. Got the 2 cats in a big dog carrier and get the dog in the car. Wife takes off, and I follow a few minutes later. Still, we had absolutely NO idea that it would become what it did. We wouldn't move back for a few months. But our home did survive. So much of our town did not.
