  1. We stayed at the Hotel St. Julien when we visited in October -- definitely quite nice and more than we usually need out of a hotel, but now I'm on their mailing list. They sent an email a few weeks ago about when they would open reservations for "family weekend" in October -- $1200/nt, 2nt minimum, prepaid and nonrefundable. Expected to sell out in minutes. I think if he ends up at CU we'll choose another weekend to visit. (Hapa Sushi, Bohemian Biergarten, and The Hungry Toad were all fun places to eat, btw)
  2. Posted this in the Isbell/Sturgill thread, but I just got reminded that the rescheduled Houston show for Stephen Wilson Jr is tomorrow night, and no way I can make it. PM if you're interested in a couple tickets.
  3. Sigh... just got reminded that the rescheduled Stephen Wilson Jr. show in Houston is tomorrow, and I'm not making it down there. PM if you're interested in a couple tickets, White Oak Music Hall.
  4. Mine hadn't bothered to check his email until I asked, which pretty much showed his level of interest. Got CAP as well, and took about 0.0 seconds to decide he had 0 interest in that. We need to plug in some numbers, but I think he's leaning CU at this point. It's fun to watch him think it all through. As for me as the dad, while if you'd asked when mine were born if I'd be bummed that they won't represent a fourth generation of our family to go to Texas, I've got nothing but pride that mine are finding their own path and demonstrating a lot more courage than I had at that age. That means so much more to me than any kind of "legacy" or "tradition," and I realize how damn lucky I am to have these great kids. That said I'm sorry for the kids (and parents) who got disappointing news, and take hope that they'll all find their way as in the countless stories I've read on here.

  6. My kid said his major criterion is, "I'm not going to college somewhere hot and flat." For him, it's not just CU but basically all the larger CO state schools and there are other things that contribute to that, but he's also in the camp that there's really nothing else in Texas that appeals to him outside of UT, and even if he gets in (deferred with everyone else) he'd still probably rather go to any of the CO schools. He has zero interest in going to A&M with 75% of his friends and Lubbock lol nope. So like a lot of the other kids on this thread. The mismanagement of higher education in Texas has been discussed ad nauseum, but it's a very real thing for him and he has no interest in the SEC schools that have benefitted from the "surly kids who can't get into UT" brain drain. As an aside, he's planning on a psych major, so I'm glad to hear there will be lots of Surly daughters there doing the same thing.
  7. Their dads want to be able to go fly fishing when the come to visit, seems pretty simple to me.
  8. Jesus would never have created a stir by calling out the religious hypocrites who colluded with an oppressive government regime to maintain their privilege.
  9. Great news, congrats to y'all and your kids! Mine got the good news from CU today as well! I think he'd been sweating it (as much as he sweats anything) after hearing from Mines and CSU so long ago. He's got some thinking to do and decisions to make, but I think he really liked the honors program at CU, so we get the feeling that's his unspoken #1 right now. And I can't argue with @Jerry Callo's point, although Clear Creek in Golden and the Poudre up from Ft. Collins aren't terrible options either. Happy for these great kids, and good luck to us parents as we try to pay the bill.
  10. Trying to find someone who's actually interested in showing up and looking at something can be an absolute beating. Warranty service is even worse, one reason I don't bother with "extended warranties" on appliances anymore. I live north of Austin, and I have used Excellence Appliance Repair a couple of times. If you're in north Austin you may be in range, but I've paid extra for them to drive out to us because they've actually showed up and fixed shit. The generic website and overly positive reviews gave me pause at first, but I rolled the dice and have been happy every time. Not cheap, but dependable. Seems to be mostly Ukranian guys who have been really awesome. I've had one of them come out and do weekend work for me on his own, PM me if you're in the area and want his info. Fridge may be a lost cause, but have them look at both and it won't feel like as much of a waste of the diagnostic fee.
  11. Excellent. Please note that our judges would also have accepted "Klein Führer."
  12. Thanks, @Ghost of LL. I know I've got travel planning fatigue when I've read that post several times in one of the 50 tabs I have open, and it completely failed to register when I asked that. I think I'll look into some daytrip options and let the grad pick. Partnachklamm looks like our speed, and the boys would love one of the alpine coasters. I do like the idea of getting out with a car for at least one day. But then, I also forget that Salzburg is close enough for a wild card day trip if he wanted to say he's been to Austria. Too many options... @longhorndude, was your Dachau tour an informal local one? I was planning on just the self-guided tour since that was my prior experience, but I never thought of looking for a smaller private guide. Found a well-reviewed one called "In Their Shoes," and it might be valuable to have someone other than Dad who could provide some actual expert historical context and things to think about in... these times.
  13. So right now I'm enjoying rereading Catch 22 along with my HS senior. I'm pleasantly surprised it hasn't been cut from the curriculum, because it makes for fantastic ledge reading: “Milo's planes were a familiar sight. They had freedom of passage everywhere, and one day Milo contracted with the American military authorities to bomb the German-held highway bridge at Orvieto and with the German military authorities to defend the highway bridge at Orvieto with antiaircraft fire against his own attack. His fee for attacking the bridge for America was the total cost of the operation plus six percent, and his fee from Germany for defending the bridge was the same cost-plus-six agreement augmented by a merit bonus of a thousand dollars for every American plane he shot down. The consummation of these deals represented an important victory for private enterprise, he pointed out, since the armies of both countries were socialized institutions. Once the contracts were signed, there seemed to be no point in using the resources of the syndicate to bomb and defend the bridge, inasmuch as both governments had ample men and materiel right there to do so and were perfectly happy to contribute them, and in the end Milo realized a fantastic profit from both halves of his project for doing nothing more than signing his name twice.” I'd forgotten it's like the bookfag version of Idiocracy.
  14. @Carl Spackler , that's a good point, and I probably am brushing off the whole area too quickly based on limited prior experience with Neuschwanstein. I think I was also leaning on the Switzerland portion of the trip which I didn't detail (5 days in Wengen/Lauterbrunnen vallley) to scratch der Alpen-itch. That said, I do have that accidental flex day in there. Do you think a day trip would be enough to hit some of the high points? Rent a car for the day maybe? If so, I could offer up some choices of things to see and do so it doesn't seem like I'm some kind of vacation fascist, ruling the itinerary with an iron fist, and... uh...
