Books you'd like to see adapted to film (or limited series)
All The Light We Cannot See would make a really great wartime drama outside of the usual scope of similar war films. Already has great cinematic structure with a non-linear narrative.

Fire Shaka Smart
No, UT won't wait "as long as it takes". This post is terrible. I said Shaka doesn't understand the nuances of half-court sets, and you reduce that to "Shaka just doesn't understand basketball". Sorry: Andrew Jones isn't going to magically create an offensive philosophy. I didn't jump to any conclusions about another coach at all. If you didn't hack the fucking Matrix I would neg you for this atrocious apologist word vomit.

High Maintenance (HBO)
Loved how this season moved more into who "The Guy" is. The two co-creators actually went through a real-life divorce writing season 2.

Fire Shaka Smart
How much of "a chance" do we need to wait to see a competent offensive philosophy? 4 seasons? More? And if the players Shaka recruited can't execute in the half court, where does the blame fall?

Fire Shaka Smart
Watching other teams in the tourney run fluid half-court sets makes it so painfully obvious Shaka doesn't understand the subtleties of half-court offensive sets. He'll always have a lower ceiling because of this, and "havoc" was just covering those deficiencies.

Wind River
Great film. Climax was indeed thrillingly gritty. I especially loved the exchange to close the movie.. powerful stuff. It really was a meditation on grief dressed up like a murder-mystery.

2018 Texas Pro Day - March 28
Good for Poona. Sucks he didn't get to compete for a Big 12 title while he was here.

Marvel Movies Better than Black Panther
I'm feeling the same fatigue, but movies like Annihilation, Wind River, and Good Time are such a needed salve. Even batshit movies I didn't exactly love like mother!, The Bad Batch, and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, I can at least appreciate the sense of not having a fucking clue where the narratives are headed. These are anti-Marvel in their narrative brazenness and should be seen in a theatre to support films that dare to be different. The beats of the third act of Black Panther are so expected, it was stunning. The final battle felt like nothing was at stake, no chance of *any* of the main characters to ultimately perish, nor did I understand why Daniel Kaluuya's troops just jumped ship so quickly with Killmonger, only to flip back in about 5 minutes of screen time.

Marvel Movies Better than Black Panther
I thought it was the best use of humor of any Marvel movie this side of the OG Guardians. Laughed the whole way, esp with Goldblum's meta-performance and Waititi (the director) voicing Korg's kiwi-ness.

Marvel Movies Better than Black Panther
Winter Soldier is maybe the best pure Marvel movie, where everything feels earned and the tension feels real. The action sequences were measured but impressive. I felt like Black Panther didn't have any time to build character from the jump, and the penultimate fight scenes for who would be crowned both felt disorienting (they can't all be John Wick's fight choreographer, I 'spose). And yes: Annihilation's beautiful display of mental illness and self-destruction probably didn't help your comparative lens, ha. Veeerrrryy different third acts, huh?

Texas recruiting notes 2019
17 or 18? I'm guessing. If we learned anything about the second signing period last year, the good to great prospects left over get pulled in every direction by desperate programs. The Coburn drama will be the new normal for studs who wait for the second signing day, unfortunately.

Can’t tell you hoe excited I am for year 2 of the Tom Herman experience...
Herman must have split personalities: one that let's dead-weight like Tim Beck crash the offense vis-a-vis Strong w/ Watson, and another one that tirelessly improves every aspect of our program and staff to maximize our recruiting advantages. *shrugs*

Tell Us About Your Avatar
Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol' storm right square in the eye and he says, "Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it."

Jimbo 2019: The Only Tail Getting Busted is Candi's
It'll be fun to watch their pro-style growing pains, and needing a QB with both Starkel's arm/pocket presence and Mond's scramble ability.

Best Concert You've Been To?
I saw the following Rage show in '07 at Voodoo Fest in Nawlins (still rebuilding after Katrina). The most energy I've witnessed at a show, both crowd and de la Rocha & crew. Just incredible.

Best Concert You've Been To?
Ghostland Observatory's album release at Austin Music Hall (2/29/08) It was the first time they brought the Longhorn Band out to play with them, which was a seminal "Austin moment" for me, as we were in the throes of the peak-Colt years and felt on the verge of another title run that year. High fucking times. Here's a great vid:

Netflix Recommendations
Wild, Wild Country was an incredible docu-series, with the creators giving shifting perspectives on where you should eventually land as viewers. I had no idea the extent of the ensuing chaos as a (somehow) buried chapter of recent American history. Absolutely bat-shit. I'd love to hear opinions after viewing all six parts on both Sheela and Osho/Bhajwan.

Marvel Movies Better than Black Panther
Black Panther has now become the highest domestic grossing Marvel film ever, surpassing the OG Avengers movie in box office sales. While I found Black Panther to be wholly entertaining, it's pretty incredible hearing reviewers mention it as a potential best picture nominee. It was apparent to me the film was dogged by the same overwrought Marvel troupes as many of the other films, namely a less-than-compelling, overly serious lead (similar to Captain America in the first Cap film), too much plot, not enough character development, a very predictable last third, etc. Personally, I thought Thor: Ragnarok was far superior as a Marvel movie, as my tastes for superhero movies slides more into the meta-narratives of Deadpool and Guardians, as well as Civil War, Winter Soldier, both Guardians movies, and the original Avengers powered by Whedon's clever scriptwriting. Thoughts on where Black Panther ranks in the Marvel hierarchy?

Texas recruiting notes 2019
I forget the game (maybe against Baylor), but Hill blew up two blockers on a screen pass and lit up the wideout. Recall him maybe getting shook up on that play? It was a thing of beauty. Dude was a beast at anticipating plays.

Texas recruiting notes 2019
Rebuttal to your rebuttal: the defensive fall-off will be slight, as Gary may be better than Malik, and some combo of Roach/Wheeler/McCulloch may be superior in Year Two of Orlandos system. Tim Beck’s role in playcalling seems to be reduced, and Hand looks to have more influence over the offensive philosophy. Add to that: Young and Toniel no longer freshmen + Anderson-anchored OL + Ehlinger not being a true freshman and we should have a significantly improved unit. The offense is on Mensa, and he knows that. I understand the pessimism on the football board, but those who follow recruiting should be starting to see the light. Excited to see guys like Sterns&Foster LLC, Josh Thompson, Taquon, and Cosmi get significant minutes. Just think after these years in the desert how sweet it’ll be: easier playoff path with BagODicks gone, rain on Jimbo Aggins Shire party, recruiting the next few years creates a monster program a la Clemson, and success dovetails into the stadium expansion, with Del Conte advocating. Boys, let’s fucking eat.
