Yeah. He’s got a wandering dick and unlimited ambition, but he isn’t stupid.

Este. Those running footsteps you hear is Manchin inserting himself into shutdown negotiations even as I type. This is gonna fuck up judiciary committee work for sure. I was negotiating with her office on something earlier this week. Furk.

Celebrity Death Pool -- 2023
Newsom will appoint the replacement to serve out the term. The only question is if he picks among the already announced candidates or a placeholder. He’ll need to move fast though, otherwise Machin is going to insert himself into shutdown negotiations as the swing vote.

Surly kids who can't get into UT
Boy 2 is getting 12k a year plus a tuition lock from Oregon and is in the Clark Honors College. Not as generous as the SEC schools, but I’m kinda snobby about schools and I wanted him to go to an AAU (plus my coparent couldn’t get down with a Deep South state). @CooterBrown is correct: work the Common Data Set. It’s a treasury trove of info: how hard schools lean on early admission, applicant demographics, testing stat breakdowns, degree breakdowns, retention rates, how far short Admissions is falling and having to take off the wait list, etc.

Surly kids who can't get into UT
There is this concept of “Buyer and Seller” schools. Buyer schools have to pitch and offer students to get their class full. NC State and Michigan State are buyer schools. They will offer money, sometimes generously, to gifted OOS students. Michigan and North Carolina are Seller schools. They don’t have to do shit. To quote the sargeant from HEAT: this shit sells itself. Small schools have much going for them: small classes, personal contact with professors, usually very charming environments. But running into all your hookups every day in the dining hall can be a bit exhausting.

Other than dumb rich kids, it’s just rare to pay full freight at a lower tier liberal arts school. I think Lewis and Clark offered Boy #1 31-32k a year. Which would have knocked the price almost in half. That’s not a screaming deal, but when you don’t have a good state option, and your kid isn’t engineer material, that number looks more reasonable.

It will ease admission standards at just off of top schools (and really all schools below the top 15). From my college perspective: Williams and Amherst will always be lottery schools, but it will make admissions at the MIddleburys, Colby, Bates, Hamilton level little ivies easier. Especially, as @Brisketexan noted, you have a boy. Those schools will likely need to become more generous with their merit offers to coax kids into coming. Similar to what occurred in the 80s and 90s when the Gen X baby bust followed on the heels of the last big wave of Boomers.

Look, I know these conversations always turn into liberal arts vs. technical degree shit flinging fests, but can we not.

Surly kids who can't get into UT
Boy #1 eked into a 33 on the ACT by virtue of a few decimal points, but the difference between a 32 and 33 is a big deal when merit money starts flowing.

IF money is tight, you can get free, officially sanctioned SAT test prep at Khan Academy.

I mean, it's possible for the Tulsa or OkState grad to do it......if they graduate top of class with honors and get into Warton or HBS for MBA. But a BBA from a non T-20 isn't going to get you shit in elite finance.

University of Washington basically straight up says that the only thing they care about is the essay. And they emphasize over and over and over again that you need to put the work in. It's the only school Boy #2 didn't get into, and it's because he mailed in the essay, which didn't conform to the one he used on the Common App.

This is where I'm going to pitch this board on Trinity: San Antonio, and the school is rich AF. My Son has loved his time there. If you are interested, apply Early Admissions.

Surly kids who can't get into UT
During the OU-Colorado game, we were joking that there were a lot of rich Cali kids who didn't get into their first choice UC school in the stands on both sides.

UF, like UT, strongly favors instate applicants. It's hard to get into Florida OOS. Georgia, as I recall, had a very acclerated application process. Like you needed to get all your stuff in by mid October or something. That's just a bridge too far even in motivated OOS families with a senior.- Surly kids who can't get into UT
This is one of the single biggest fallacies in Liberal Arts cost analysis: That the price listed on the tuition page is what you will pay. Virtually all quality Liberal Arts schools provide grants and tuition assistance to bring the cost down, often by over half. Premier Liberal Arts schools often waive tuition for families with incomes under 100k. If you are looking out of state, and money is an issue, and you have a bright child who is not going to quite make the 6-7% at their Texas HS, investigate liberal arts schools. Your almost certain to get a better deal than out of state public schools. Hell, my oldest is at Trinity in San Antonio, and with merit and need based aid, it ended up being cheaper than Maryland in state. My youngest is at Oregon, and out side of some merit aid and tuition lock, he's going to cost me significantly more than Boy #1.- NFL Week 3
It’s hard to overstate how badly the Saints mismanaged their lead. Just absolutely dumbass football.- The Deion (Colorado) @ Oregon - ABC
This made me furious. I get Lanning wanted to make a statement. But he’s gonna be regretting that decision when the Huskies come to town in a few weeks.- Surly kids applying / attending UT
Totally get it. That’s why if your kid is going to look elite out is state because UT isn’t an option, don’t wait until January. Applying regular admission, even at less selective schools puts you at a serious disadvantage. Also, the longer it goes before applying, the better the chance senioritis sets in. And, as we’ve discussed in previous years: I don’t give a fuck how brilliant and accomplished your child is: all Ivies & Near Ivies are lottery schools. Do not put all your eggs in that basket.- Surly kids applying / attending UT
I’m going to give you two pieces of advice that are the single most broadly applicable things(I’ve gone through this twice in the last 4 years): 1. Apply early. You want your kids app in the pool as early as possible. As the class fills up, the acceptance standards go up. 2. Force your child to have and apply to a safety school, and possibly a deep safety. The difference between the two is a deep safety is an in state option you are guaranteed admissions and is cheap in case you have a family tragedy and money for college becomes scarce. Either way, don’t be that unfortunate family that sees little Johnny/Suzy not get in their dream achool, then it’s April and you don’t have a back up option. Elite school admissions are inherently unpredictable, so be prepared.- The Deion (Colorado) @ Oregon - ABC
UO is great, but the charm wears off pretty quick once it starts raining and you realize how much scuzzy meth life is right below the surface.- The Deion (Colorado) @ Oregon - ABC
And Phil Knight is certainly back filling Oregon’s delayed revenues for the Big 10. I will say, Eugene is kinda a shit hole. Not College Station, but it’s def not Bend. I like Deion’s confidence. If he can get this team to 9-3 and have a big offseason, this will all be forgotten. If USC pushes in his shit next week and he ends up 6-6 or worse, that transfer portal might not be as forgiving. Now that he’s popped the cherry on turning over your whole roster each year, the uniqueness of it will be gone. - Surly kids who can't get into UT
