  1. 100% the Agency moved the goalposts after giving early advice due to the mRNA nature of this vaccine. Iif you go back to my prior post, the Moderna approach also conflicts with the pan-influenza vaccine research - for which a grant was preferentially given to Trump's new head of the NIH - that aims to utilize chemically inactivated whole viruses. The mRNA approach is attractive because one can make changes to the antigen target easily, which has been done effectively for emerging COVID strains. Traditional influenza virus production for vaccines relies on inoculating chicken eggs. That's not only expensive and time consuming, but it's a resource which also has pressure with bird flu during times of need (since we wont vaccinate our chickens, unlike the approach being used in Europe). Yes, this is certainly another step towards making America more scientifically stupid. At the very least, newer vaccines with state of the art technology seem more likely to be approved ex-US than here, which is truly unfortunate. But I'm encouraged that after a little pressure and some tinkering with the protocol it's proceeding to review.
