OP should listen to this episode of This American Life, in the hopes it will help him understand why diversity programs are important. It's not just about recruiting - it's about helping kids from diverse and economically disadvantaged backgrounds to succeed once they get to college, instead of falling through the cracks and dropping out due to being in an environment that feels foreign and lack of a support system, among other reasons.

And don't give me any "they just need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and work harder" bullshit. It's so much more complex and nuanced than that.
