Texas deep freeze carnage thread
Austin Water has tweets about SW Austin but fuck all about all the other areas that are evidently fucked. I worry about some crazy no water Chicago Fire situation. Not like we dont have desperate Mrs. O'Learys and assorted barn animals trying to keep warm.

Sure. Arguably you should be conserving but do a quick 3 min shower. I've showered with pails of untreated beaver fever water. Just don't drink it and keep your eyes shut, just in case. (Caveat: I have zero expertise)

I was just about to buy em. But now water out, so... checkmate mother nature.

Barrington Oaks (Nw Austin 78759) no water. I cut mine off voluntarily yesterday.

I'm not sure if this fucked up situation means all those EMP survivalist thrillers I've read are silly because the truth is sadly far more mundane, or more terrifying than ever.

20 hours, not expecting coming back today. Trickling inside pipes, wrapped (foam, towel, covered in bucket or tub). Thinking i will cut water today. Anything I need to do with gas water heater (garage) after I run faucets dry?

Possibly the first time I could say I might have better off heading to the hills (small barnondominium with wood heat stove). But I might not have considered turning water off first. Hmmm. Maybe better to be the captain on a sinking ship.

Mother did remodel to tankless and this is second time it frozen up (78759, NW Hills). She is already saying she's going to add back the gas waterheater in the garage.

Was hoping it gets above freezing Saturday. Forecast now making that iffy (NW Austin). That's gonna be a long time bow freezing + the super chill Monday. Ugh.

coffee / coffee makers
Tasters choice house blend. Fathers day shutterfly mug with pictures of my kids. (Black ceramic, so I never have to wash it. Get a new one next Fathers day. Retire the old one.) Tap water. Microwave 1 minute. If want to be fancy I add a little crystal on the top. Sort of like barrista foam art.

nerf weapons (aka shooting my children with foam darts)
Trust me, the aeon pro and nexus pro are bananas. The nerds in /r/nerf would agree Adventure Force is just Wally Worlds house brand... not sure who makes the nexus and aeon. Dont really care. They are legit 40-50% more powerful (by fps) than a 'normal' nerf. They aren't even really kids toys any more. There mere brandishing of my aeon terrifies my kids. I only use it from very far. Up close it might be child abuse. It might be worth it.

Surly Rurals Are Surly Thread
since yall brought up John Graves and pissing off the porch... https://www.texasmonthly.com/articles/writing-life/ Further, there is a part of Goodbye to a River where he describes an old man who every morning got up and pissed in the same spot, the salt killing the grass and leaving a bare spot. I think of that often.

Surly Rurals Are Surly Thread
My plan is to retire early (52) in a decade. Every week I'll drive up to the ranchette (51 ac near Goldthwaite) Sunday afternoon for 3 nights, and return to a condo or townhome (something with basically zero maintenance) in Austin. So 3 nights rural, 4 nights city. Figure this way I can have poker games with my buddies in town, see art movies, eat Ethiopian or thai food, see docs, and yet still enjoy spraying mesquite with diesel and trooping around cutting cedar with a gear bypass. Not sure if the wife will join me - she's a teacher and a workaholic and will probably never stop. But that's okay, the 600 sq ft barndominium aint much for luxury living anyway. With covid limited kids rec sports on weekends, this past year has been awesome. I've probably driven up 45 out of 50 weeks. The low this weekend is like 12, but I still might go. What the hell else am I going to do?

lawyer has a hard time with zoom
Ha. I've had a battle with Mr. Ponton - he is a character. He's had a long career out there. Showed the Texas Rangers they were full of shit, so he's earned more than a little good will.
