  1. The "Big Law" firms essentially hire from the top ~15 law schools, plus some small number of students who finish really high in their class from schools located near a certain office. For instance, a NYC office will hire a bunch of ivy leaguers and maybe a few kids from Fordham each year. Your daughter should probably apply to UT and other top 15 schools that look appealing (and fit w/ her LSAT score). And then also apply to a few safety schools in cities where she is interested in living. For perspective on why access to the major firms matters, those firms pay first year associates ~$250k w/ significant yearly raises, and more importantly are gateways to better jobs elsewhere (e.g., in-house jobs that are far less soul crushing). It is certainly not the only path to a high-paying legal career, but a very well trodden one.
  2. Gram Parsons -- was just hitting his prime and incredibly prolific Jeff Buckley -- Grace is just so good and his vocal talents so unique, he likely had another masterpiece in him.

  4. The answer used to be that you should go to the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park. But thats no longer an option. Thanks, Carole Baskin. People in other parts of Oklahoma make fun of Ardmore.
  5. Digging into the numbers a bit, my guess is that Anderson produces some of the highest performing kids in the district but also isn't doing as much to help their low performing kids. Just a guess as my kids are not high school age yet, but it would match my experience sending my kids to Gullet and Doss. At Gullet there was no diversity, the floor was pretty high, but the school also did not do much extra for the top performers (actively discouraging participation in things like G&T). Doss seems to group G&T kids together in classes and then push those kids to do work above grade level. I would not be surprised if that same divide persists through middle and high school, especially given the IB track.
  6. Since this is becoming a catch-all "is my itinerary crazy" thread, I'll add my own question. We are going to Europe for 7-8 days in August. Wife and I both travelled a good bit when younger, but this will be the first time in Europe in 15+ yrs. Our primary destination is Paris. We have both been several times, so plan to only spend half the trip there. Goal for Paris is relaxing walks around the city and good food w/ the Orsay and Notre Dame being the only must do things. The big question is what to do with the remaining 3-4 days. I am currently considering either Amsterdam (largely due to Eurostar from Paris and then direct flight back to Austin) or destinations in northern France (maybe Reims, Lille or both). But are there hidden jewels I am not thinking about? Is something in southern France too far afield for such a short trip? FWIW, wife is not really a history buff, so I am guessing something like Bordeaux/Arcachon is more attractive than say Normandy.
  7. There is a known problem with thousands of idiots owning big cats in Texas. If you really have a large black cat, it could be an escaped leopard or jaguar.
  8. Fair point. I think its that none have ever been confirmed to exist. Some other cats (like bobcats) are known to be capable of melanism, but it occurs so infrequently that only a few have ever been observed.
  9. There is a fun debate about whether those actually exist. Scientists say mountain lions cannot be melanistic . . . but a ton of people claim to see them. Part of our collective subconscious (like bigfoot).
  10. Its like a doberman, Michael. Let it have its ears!
  11. I may not be totally understanding the question, but I think there may be a few potential next steps for you. The first thing I would try is learning common triad shapes -- some people find the CAGED system a quick way to learn a number of those shapes as it relies on chord shapes you already know. You could also try leaning some different modes so that you could (to use your example) shift to Dorian shapes over the 2 and Mixolydian shapes over the 5. But I'd probably just start with basic triads.
  12. In this case that message was indigent defendants being stuck in jail for longer than necessary when trials were delayed because the district clerk wan't competent enough to deliver jury summonses.
  13. Agree with the sentiment . . . especially for anyone living in a place like Travis County. The outlier may be parts of the state that are flipping blue and where the D party has never had a realistic enough shot at winning to properly identify and vet candidates. Hays county went strongly blue last cycle and ended up with a 19 year old district clerk that had no idea how to do the job, which unsurprisingly had real consequences for the county.
  14. The RAT is one of the few dirt pedals that pairs well with the top boost channel of a Vox . . . so its got that going for it.

I have watched this several times this week . . . . incredibly interesting guitar jam. Julian is an absolute monster jazz guitarist, and his playing on this is completely uninhibited. He goes for all sorts of chromatic stuff that most guitarists would never think of or attempt. Some of it works and some of it doesn't, but its all interesting. And it pushes the Goose guitarist into some more interesting territory too.
  16. That article captures most of the likely contender. For Austin, my guesses would be Barley Swine (or Odd Duck); Nixta; Franklin; Canje; and Suerte. Looking at the recent Michelin stars in Mexico City, they went out of the way to pick some casual regional places. I think for Tx there has to be barbecue and tacos represented.
  17. Out of those choices, Denver would be the easy choice for me. But if you already like where you live and have built a community, I would consider investing in a less expensive second home where you can spend the few months per year when the weather is bad in Arkansas. Santa Fe/Albuquerque could also be an option. Boise is worth looking at. Lot of good candidates in California if you can stomach the taxes.
  18. Previously mentioned lonestar Strat:
  19. I have a lonestar strat that I bought in the late 90s. Its great. At some point I swapped out the humbucker for a single coil and ditched the pearl pickguard for a more classic strat vibe. Its as good or better than any other modern strat I have played.
  20. Neil Young had a long run of subpar studio albums before Harvest Moon and Freedom. Willie was into his 60s when he released Teatro and Spirit.
  21. Traditionally, top firms interview on campus at the top ~15 law schools. They will hire from one of the elite schools without knowing grades. A candidate from somewhere like UT that is in that traditional top 15 group but not "elite" will need a decent GPA. Students from schools outside the top ~15 schools can still get jobs at top firms (typically in the city nearest the law school) if they are near the top of their class.
  22. Its considered by many to be the quintessential Martin model, especially in bluegrass circles. It's probably very resonant, boomy low end (though less than some other Martin models like the HD-28), and loud (which is why bluegrass guys love them). Ad does not say a year but it looks fairly new. Modern Martin quality control is pretty good, imo, so less chance its a dud than with some other brands. Good price too.
  23. Been waiting for this to start streaming for a long time. One of my all time favorites. I particularly like the more odd and surreal episodes, like Aurora Borealis and The Body in Question. The minor characters like Bernard and Adam are also wonderful.
