Meanwhile in China
I have to be skeptical of this. The radiation levels to cause acute burns are very high, and not at all consistent with anything natural in the ground. If he really got radiation burns, then he was digging around some illegally disposed of highly radioactive something-or-other.

Gold bug / silver bug / numismatic / metals thread
Coin shops should sell 'junk silver' which is 90% silver old US coins (from 1964 and before). Normally these should sell around melt value for the silver.

Melting them into something cool is definitely a good use for those. Otherwise, my personal opinion would be to cash them in for silver value, which will make sure they don't get 'accidentally' spent for 25 cents.

I think wanna-be-gold-bugs just need some patience right now, and wait out the craziness. It won't last forever. At least, I hope not.

Coin Collecting Thread
For series 1996, probably no value over face. If any of the serial numbers has a star, or is really unusual (like all 8s or something), then there is more chance, but most likely the value is what is printed on them.

RIP James D. Hornfischer
RIP. I have read and enjoyed two of his books, and have another on the shelf that I have not got to yet. A really good writer.

I am still wanting to add some small gold type coins, but I think premiums (to spot) are still really high right now, so I am practicing patience. Hopefully soon I can try and track down some of my wants, like a 2 peso, 2.5 peso, Canadian sovereign, and maybe a USA $1 and $2.5. Those small ones will have more premium that the big coins, so eventually I should probably just suck it up and pay up. In the meantime, I am considering getting around 20 g of rhenium metal pellets, just in case that metal price goes nuts sometimes, and if it doesn't, I'll at least have a cool stash of a rare exotic metal.

DoorDash UberEats Favor bitching
Why should the cost of the food and of the delivery be connected? They are two completely different things. And what does the cost have to do whether it is convenient or not? Usually I expect to pay more for convenience and how much depends a lot on the situation and much less on what I feel like paying.

The exact genome, at least the first one, was figured out very quickly, whether or not China provided any help on anything. And the vaccine makers were right on it with that sequenced genome.

You mean these vaccines, which seem to be extremely effective, that have been developed and deployed faster than any vaccine ever made before? Hmmm...

The Parkway is built where an old native road was, back when 'road' meant only footpath. I thought it was cool to be traveling on a very old path there.

That is a good plan to start with. Note that some parts of the Rim are closed sometimes due to falcons nesting, I do not know if that is the case right now though. Water is heavy.

Alleged Collection Agency Wants Me to Pay Them 700 George Washington Dollars, and 2 Cents Less Than 50 Cents
My understanding (hopefully I will be corrected if wrong): Do *NOT* pay anything on this account, whether or not the collection people are especially scammy or not. I think that, if you do pay anything, then that account is considered active again, and instead of having this 11 year old collections account (which should have dropped off your credit report), you will then have a 1 day old active but delinquent account, and THEN your credit will be negatively affected by this. EDIT: On actually reading your message, I see that this is not actually your account, so doubly-extra you should ignore it. But if it WAS your account somehow, still do not pay anything.

Fine art paintings
I can't think of a specific favorite painting, but I have been impressed a few times how incredibly different the physical painting can be from a print that otherwise looks much the same. My parents had a print by some Dutch painter, of a young woman in a kitchen or something like that. The print was so boring, I could not imagine why anyone would put up such a boring picture. Then I saw it in person in the Rijksmuseum, and it glowed, the daylight was luminescent yellow. It was amazing! But only in person. I've had similar experiences with some Frida Kahlo works, things I had seen a million times as a print, then in person I see the eyes in the portraits for real, and it is a shock.

Pipeline Problem Potentially Problematic, production possibly paralyzed
What happened on Feb 10? I was not sure what that one was. I suppose you might be referring to when the Wampanoag Indians under King Philip killed all the men in Lancaster Mass in 1676, maybe you barely escaped from that in time or something.
