Where Should I Retire...?
Yeah was going to California is not a retirement destination for most because of the cost, but if I had $2.5M to spend and wanted access to a city and outdoors I’d be thinking something like Coronado or Sausalito.

It’s an uptown institution and lots of chefs have made their names there, but imo it just hadn’t retained its relevance in recent years. Some customers bought it last fall so looking forward to seeing what they do. What does not get enough pub is Zasu, opened up in Mid-City a few years ago by one of Gautreau’s best chefs in recent memory, Sue Zemanick.- New Orleans Food and Drink Thread
I don’t think Nina Compton has had much focus on CL in years. Think she spends most of her time at BABs and stupid ventures like that NFT cocktail club. Anyway, congrats to Dakar for James Beard best new restaurant, great guy and story. No surprise that Chris Hannah got another one too.- Houston Astros 2024 Season Thread
- Texas tops list of worst places to live and work in America
I mean, you’re viewing it from the vantage point of one of the best deals in the country in terms of affordability, space, schools, etc. California’s median home price just broke $900k. You’re right, it’s not at all comparable but people deal with it (or move to Texas!).- Texas tops list of worst places to live and work in America
It’s quite mind-boggling, and I say this as someone who actually made the move. A lot of it is just how cheap Texas is relative to the rest of the country, but I’ve been here a decade now and the cost still blows my mind (particularly the RWC area). edit: check out r/BayAreaRealEstate, weirdest fucking sub on that site.- 26% of Fort Worth’s single family homes are owned by companies
The main reasons are (1) local zoning regulations that have obstructed growth for decades followed by (2) periodic market downturns over that period that have adversely affected the economics of home building. Corporate investment is a symptom of supply shortage, not a cause. It is literally the investment thesis of these ventures. And on a national scale, corporate investment is irrelevant-something like 3% of homes. As I mentioned, it is certainly a major factor in some markets (metro Atlanta has been about 25% of purchases over the last few years IIRC), but in the Bay Area where I live - ground zero of the housing crisis - it is basically nonexistent.- New Orleans Food and Drink Thread
Head-on shrimp is key.- 26% of Fort Worth’s single family homes are owned by companies
No, the vast majority of America’s housing crisis is due to local zoning regulations that have prohibited supply from keeping up with demand over the past few decades. This isn’t even remotely controversial. I don’t dispute that institutional investment in housing is a problem in certain markets, but national it’s quite irrelevant (~3% of single family homes). “Blackrock” et al have become convenient bogeyman to direct focus from the real problem Oh, and why is institutional money flowing into housing?- 26% of Fort Worth’s single family homes are owned by companies
Maybe we should building more housing so it isn’t such an attractive asset class for investment.- Bay Area
No, not at all. Presidio has some of the best views of the bridge, and the new Presidio tunnel tops has an incredible vista. You can walk down from them hotel and get coffee in the morning. Also, Tiburon > Sausalito. Specifically, Mai Tai’s at Sam’s.- Bay Area
Everyone goes to Tahoe or the wine country. And yes, as mentioned you can’t see the fireworks through the fog.- Bay Area
Chinatown kinda sucks and is for tourists. It’s gotten better in the past few years. Z&Y, R&G during Dungeness season, Chong Qing Xiao Mian for noodles, Bund Cafe for soup dumplings, Capital for wings, Good Mong Kok for dim sum. Z&Y Peking Duck just opened and is great. Four Kings sounds like the hottest restaurant in town, but haven’t been yet. Casual spot from Mister Jiu’s people (which is one of the best restaurants in the city). Best Asian is on the west side, mainly on Clement and Irving. Dragon Beaux, PPQ Dungeness, Good Luck Dim Sum, Burma Superstar and Mandalay (Burmese is huge here), Lily, Spices. San Tung on Irving is prob my biggest rec - famous for the wings. The Tenderloin arguably has just as good spots, but I don’t recommend venturing around there unless you’re a die hard pho fan (and then I have recs!).- Wine
Back vintage Boudignon, imo. Good friend of mine worked that harvest! Said it was an incredible experience working with those folks.- Bay Area
Healdsburg is our favorite wine country town. I recommend Ridge nearby. Iconic Sonoma producer and great views of their Lytton Springs estate. If you want to do Napa, we usually stay in Calistoga. Yountville has gotten absurdly expensive. Chappellet is a great experience imo.- Bay Area

Uber for sure - or actually, Waymo. It’s all I take these days if I can. Waitlist is a few weeks. Parking is just a massive PITA here and you don’t need to deal with that on vacation.- Bay Area
Think the average age of this audience is above 24.- Bay Area
And best place to stay. The Lodge and the Inn are what we recommend for visitors.- Bay Area
Oh certainly, I was under the impression you wanted to use the Bay as a launching point for a road trip (which is a great idea, lots within three hours). Yes, Muir is an easy to just to drive up to some Redwoods. Are you a hiker? There’s a nice little hotel called the Mountain Home Inn nearby that’s a good base for Mt. Tam hiking. Can access parts of Muir without dealing with the tourists.- Bay Area
West Marin County is great. Sounds like you are down for a long drive? Since it’s summer I’d drive up to Redwood and stop in Mendocino along the way.- Wine
