I live in the Florida Panhandle, which is not exactly known as a golf mecca. We have Sandestin—with its three perfectly respectable public courses—and Watersound Club, which is for the Surly elite. Recently, though, two new golf developments have appeared about 30 miles inland from the beach, away from 30A, South Walton, Destin, and Panama City—out where people normally just drive past pine trees and wonder how much farther it is to the coast. The one that’s furthest along is Old Shores (https://oldshores.com/), from the same people who brought us Bandon Dunes and Sand Valley. Like those places, Old Shores will be public, which immediately makes it more interesting and more dangerous to my wallet. The other course is called Old Charlie, and it has much more of an Ohoopee vibe—private, mysterious, and seemingly designed so that I will never accidentally end up there. (https://shop.oldcharliegolfclub.com/) Old Shores is supposed to open for founders’ play this fall and be fully open next year. I’ve driven past that property a jillion times and never once thought, this would make a great golf course. But Michael Keiser spotted it on Google Earth, called Tom Doak, and now—apparently—that’s all it takes. I just hope I’m not too old to enjoy it… or young enough to still walk 36.
