South Padre Island
I don’t have an answer about CWS, sorry man, but did have a separate question—what is the deal with the water from tap?! Undrinkable and even had an odor in the shower. We didn’t cook with it, and even the soda at restaurants was foul because of it. We’ve always bought bottles water from the Blue Marlin for drinking but this year it was at a whole other level of awful.

Texas Football Podcasts, Press Conferences & Interviews Thread
That’s a good description. Because it is painful to listen to. I’m sure Ian will improve, and I like that he doesn’t play the Kevin Dunn contrarian role and drift into their political echo chamber. But it’s a bit rough right now. Speaking of Kevin Dunn…he and Paul act like Kevin is the professional who carries EGAT, but their dynamic is weird and Paul is way more entertaining and informative. Also, Kevin takes things way too seriously—he misses about 3 jokes per episode or mistakenly takes Paul’s jokes as personal…anyway, I’d rather listen to Paul fly solo. At least he’s honest about his arrogance, ha

Leaving education
The students are the absolute best part of the job. (I do think as I get older they sense a barrier even if I don’t…though I’ve worked with tons of teachers that are in their 50s-60s who kids loved and respected.) As your post and Friday experience remind, it’s the adults who make it crappy. I’m grateful you’re still finding fulfillment and going the extra mile for your students. It really does matter—teachers impact eternity. I may feel differently in a month…maybe I’ve just hit a low patch. But it seems different this time. It’s daunting to think about starting over…anyway, vent any time. I’ve always enjoyed your candor about teaching through your posts over the years. And I’ll definitely update this thread.

Leaving education
Big thanks to everyone who responded, even those without advice who offered well wishes. Thanks for the questions to prompt my thinking. Family (young children, grandparents in the area, wife’s desire to stay here) means I can’t relocate—the support and benefits of being close to them are super important to us. I’m 40, with no debt…a new degree is probably not on the table, as much for time and energy as for cost. (Though I do have savings to leverage for a career transition and certificate, which sounds interesting based on feedback from others in the thread.) My wife makes significantly more than I do, so I don’t feel a ton of pressure to maximize money. Her job doesn’t come with health insurance, though, so that is a clear benefit I need. Again, you provide some great reflection points for personal inventory. I’m probably not ready to list “not a worthless piece of shit” on my resume, but I like to think I can learn/adapt. Thanks for the specific recommendation, along with salesforce from @bluto Thanks for using that precious “resting quiet time” to respond, I know those moments well, ha. I’d be interested in some of those “on the side” opportunities to even see if, as someone else asked, I’m ready for the work environment outside the rhythms of a school day/year. I’ll DM you. This sound interesting. Your assumption re: my ability for logic/concepts/seriousness is a solid one, (or if it isn’t I should be starting an entirely different thread.) I have absolutely no background knowledge in IT but am willing to consider a switch if there’s the kind of certainty regarding the future that you describe. Overall, it’s crazy to even be considering this. I loved going into the classroom each day for a long time, felt fulfilled by the vocation, and saw myself as a career educator. But these last two years have made it draining, and while not dreadful, at least not meaningful/fulfilling enough to make up for the stress/challenges. Which may sound crazy, of course—I’m sure there are lots of careers with way more stress than education. Anyway, thanks again for the responses and in advance for anyone else who replies.

Leaving education
Did a quick search for this topic, didn’t see anything, so SIAP. After 10+ years as an educator in K-12, I don’t think I can do it any longer. What in the world can I do with that experience and bachelor’s and master’s in education? I see recommendations for Instructional Design or Training Management in the corporate realm, or ed tech and education-adjacent sales…anyway, just seeing if anyone else has made the switch at this point in their career and had advice/thoughts. Or should I just apply to Costco and call it a day?

2022 Transfer Thread - It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Same here, as long as I’ve got 30 minutes to spare and time to clean the sticky off my shoes when I leave fr, Braum’s is delicious but struggle with cleanliness and timeliness *return to transfer portal talk*

Perfect Junk Food
No joke, you can buy them from Neiman Marcus. Come in a big Pringles-type can. They call them chocolate covered “corn twists”. Have to fight myself not to eat the whole can.

Surly’s list of Dallas top 25 restaurants
Anybody who gets to eat there more frequently than I do tell me what happened to Pecan Lodge? I haven’t eaten there in a couple years but when I was going through Dallas I always tried to hit up some brisket. Now it dropped out of Top 50 and seems to draw a less than enthusiastic response here.

Golden Corral, Pancho's and Other Low-Brow Eateries of Your Youth
We grew up paycheck to paycheck lower middle class, so any trip out to eat with 4 kids was going to be Pancho’s, CiCi’s, or this place called Bluebonnet Cafeteria or something like that? No doubt a precursor to Golden Corral…I don’t remember exactly where it was, but it was in Garland in the early 90s…for his 9th birthday, my brother asked if he could be dropped off there at lunch and picked up after dinner. Parents heavily considered it but decided he might get kicked out, Homer Simpson-style.

Media/$9.95-er postgame analysis articles (Week 11)
My favorite part of this is that it’s essentially a giant subtweet to his podcast co-host Kevin Dunn. Who is generally insufferable and thinks he’s a football genius because he can recite the OL starters on the ‘86 Longhorns. He’s been on the “this team is not talented” train since OU and won’t listen to Scip. Anyway, Scip is arrogant but he is spot on here.

HIT THE WIDE OPEN KID FOR A TD We have an OC that can literally draw up “The touchdown play” and can’t find a QB in the state of Texas (plus Oklahoma) to hit it.

Eat-Mor-Chikin: My Pleasure
That chicken wrap with the avacado lime dressing is not too shabby, either. They still rationing sauces? Before the great sauce shortage of ‘21, I used to purposely ask for extra to use on my own stuff at home. I know you can buy bottles but it’s not the same bro
