  1. AMZN is kicking in sixty billion after laying off 30k employees. It's pretty disgusting
  2. I think it has to do with the video file container type. On my desktop when I click "download video" I get a .m3u8 file which is just a configuration blob pointing to where the video is streamed from. I'd bet mobile browsers don't handle it gracefully
  3. And they are planned to be deployed to polling sites for "reasons". Yeah. They're just the blackshirts.
  4. That's just a chatbot doing b2b negotiations, which are presumed to be entered into in good faith. It wouldn't hold up to public usage, or a more competitive supplier market. No disagreement that contact centers can resolve a ton of calls with voice or text agents instead of people, but you're still gonna need humans in the loop for exception handling and soft skills
  5. The article stated that they replace the high bypass fans with machinery more suited for non-moving power generation, but yeah the data centers are running on a fleet of 737's just sitting at full throttle for months on end. It's horrific for the local community's health
  6. IMO that's a bad misappropriation of "stochastic terrorism" which is usually more like what happened on January 6th, where you whip up a crowd into a frenzy but do it at a distance where you can deny being directly involved. It's taking inciting actions with the intent to instigate a particular response. Laying people off to free up capital for investment is good ol fashioned capitalism, as American as apple pie. AMZN turning around and dumping $60,000,000,000 into openAI might actually be stochastic terrorism though, you've got me there. If they can justify their AI investments it's only going to encourage more layoffs across the industry
  7. In my experience, those employees tend to be highly sought after by upper management because you can threaten their green card as another negotiation lever. I've seen it first hand with some of my customers in how their treat their staff H1B's and even worse for their TCS or other contracted H1B's
  8. Running gas turbines as power plants has been old hat for many many years now, you drive by em along I-10 all the time between Houston and San Antonio. It's just that those are permitted as permenant power plants with the proper air scrubbing tech, and placed far enough away from population centers to not cause major health risks from their persistent operation. And most of those installations are 5-10 turbines, with 10 units representing a pretty large power plant with 5GW of peak output. Elon has built the equivalent of at least five full-fledged power stations, without permitting or any consideration for the local population that lives there, nor any of the air scrubbing tech. Elon is simply trying to run faster than the regulations can catch up to him. The residents of Memphis are pissed about it, and it's causing measurable health issues in an area already prone to asthma.
  9. Oh shit, don't know how I'm just now hearing about this, Zuck to face a jury trial for producing an intentionally "defective product" designed to feed addiction and exploit vulnerabilities in children. It's basically a product liability law case, but I'm amazed it's actually proceeding to a empanneling a jury. NPRMeta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to face jury in landmark social...The case is seen as a test of social media's legal responsibility for platform design features that plaintiffs' lawyers say exacerbated mental health issues in young people. From the article: The woman at the center of the case, a 20-year-old from California known only as KGM, or Kaley, in legal documents, says she started compulsively using YouTube when she was 6 years old and later, around age 9, she began scrolling on Instagram. Kaley said her use of the platforms worsened her depression and suicidal thoughts. Jurors are expected to hear from her at length when she takes the witness stand later in the trial. ... In her original suit, KGM sued Meta, Google, TikTok and Snap, accusing the companies of borrowing techniques used by Big Tobacco in decades past to target young people to get them addicted, all the while ignoring internal research that their products would cause harm to teens. Both TikTok and Snap settled before trial, leaving Meta and Google as the two remaining defendants. For weeks, the courtroom has been filled with bereaved parents holding framed photos of their children who died after encountering harm on social media. Julianna Arnold, whose daughter died at 17 after being lured by a predator she met on social media, has been among those attending the trial proceedings in Los Angeles. She and other parents are hoping for a verdict against the tech companies. "We lost our kids, and there's nothing we can do about that. But what we can do is inform other parents and families about these harms and that these platforms are dangerous and that we need to put guardrails on these companies," Arnold told NPR recently. "And they cannot just do whatever they want when they want, how they want. And I want parents to know that these are not safe platforms for their children."
  10. Well yeah, gas TURBINE generators are the same thing that goes on an airplane. An Arleigh Burke destroyer runs on four jet engines that produce electricity and in turn power the ship. xAI's Memphis project has been breaking Clean Air regulation left right and center by trucking in dozens and dozens of those gas turbine plants and running them 24/7. Collosus 1 used around 35 turbines, each producing around 500MW. Collosus 2 is planned to use 40+ turbines to power their cluster. That's a TITANIC amount of NOx emissions and noise and CO2 for that area, and for zero economic gain or benefit to the local community. Oh yeah, and did you hear? They're planning on destroying Dinosaur Park to build more datacenters up new Fort Worth!
  11. It really drives home how many lives could have been saved had Elon given enough of a shit to block Russian usage of starlink terminals
  12. Epstein files keep getting harder to ignore, so the distractions must get bigger. Plus trump has been obsessed with being a wartime president, so this all broadly tracks

  14. Kinda reminds me of my late pug. Dude has some serious east-west eye going

  16. Especially with Giannis' taking a stake in Kalshi after the fact too. It's just so blatant

  18. Donald Trump working with Russian oligarchs to facilitate money laundering and human trafficking seems to fit his past pattern of behavior as documented in the Epstein files and public records. But sorry, I just wanted to keep things focused on the human chattel treatment happening with our taxpayer funds.
  19. Don't strain yourself ignoring that this was procured in order to build a human stockyard for torturing and disappearing uncooperative citizens and immigrants
  20. They bought this warehouse to stack human beings into and treat them like animals, witholding food and water and hygenic spaces. Address that before you get too excited with your tut-tutting, counselor.
  21. As ever, never miss a chance to normalize trump and extend him the benefit of the doubt eh? He overpaid by a hundred million to a Russian oligarch, which is going to directly fund the 5 year invasion of Ukraine. He over paid a Russian to buy land to build his fucking concentration camps. Keep that in mind as you grope for the presumption of regularity
  22. Sheeeeeiiiitttt if he's saying "totally exonerated" ala Russian collusion and election interference, then holy shit this dude fucked so many children and he is our president
  23. I can tell you from a platform perspective, anything that's "deleted" is really just marked for deletion and put onto a digital trash pile until garbage collection (that's the actual computer science term) actually purges it off the disk. If it's within a close enough window, and with the correct legal CYA, you can "break glass" and reach into the pile to grab something before it's purged. I had customer accidentally delete 50TB's of just migrated data that they got SUPER lucky on and the cloud provider was able to "undelete" about 80% of the data. In this case, since the servie auto-snapshots movement and stores it for 24hrs (or however long it is) for unpaid users, I can see technically how this happened without a backdoor being built in. It's just how these platforms work when customer data is unencrypted
  24. You're telling me that the company named after an all-seeing artifact and source of corruption, would lead to a surveilance state and corruption???
  25. The article says the opposite of your assertion, unless every gazan family is just default Hamas to you. The Hamas-run Interior Ministry said in a statement it was committed to preventing any armed presence inside hospitals, and that legal action would be taken against violators. It suggested that armed members of certain Gazan families had recently entered hospitals, but did not identify those involved.
