Trivial Things That Make You Surly
People who leave 10 plus feet open in front of them in checkout lines. Guy at Costco is 20 feet back from the entry point to the self checkout registers for some reason. I head to the front and I get a "lines back here" from the guy. No, it's up here by the cash registers asshole. I get it if it would block some cross traffic, but not the case here. Guy just felt the need to leave a big ass gap.

Fat People
I was at 177 pounds (5'10") a year and change ago. I quit alcohol and drastically reduced my sugar intake after pre-diabetic level bloodwork and the other ill-effects of too much booze, sugar, and fat. Fast forward a year and I'm down to a consistent 155 lbs and near perfect bloodwork. I recently began focusing on eliminating bad fat from my diet to get to a consistent 150 lbs and lower cholesterol. I'm permanently done with booze, sugar, and bad fats.

West Wing
I loved the series and have seen them all a dozen times. That said, the sanctimony could be too much to bear at times. Whenever someone said it's "President Bartlett" rather than Bartlett or whatever, my eyes about rolled out of the socket. I've always hated the notion that politicians deserve or are entitled to respect or that their titles are sacred. They work for us and earn our respect, not the other way around.

NYC helicopter crash
Poor family. There have been a fair number of tourist helicopter crashes here in Hawaii over the years. One on my town's main street a few years ago that killed everyone. I don't understand why someone would take their family on one of those. There's no potential soft landing like a plane can have when something goes wrong.

Thread of Belt Tightening
I'm on Mint unlimited for $40 a month all in. Works fine everywhere and their international add-on plan is easy to use when I travel abroad. I like the absence of a contract and using my unlocked phone with it.

A travel video I watched said it's a top 5 food destination in the world. I'm pumped.

Trip to Waikiki
@texasdago The ABC chainstores usually have fairly affordable to-go foods like sushi, etc... It's fine. There are all the usual chains that are reasonably affordable as well. I live on the windward side and tell friends that are visiting that there really isn't much great food on Oahu in my opinion. There are plenty of expensive places but not very memorable in terms of food quality. So just getting half decent affordable food while enjoying the beaches makes the most sense to me. I will say that the beaches on the windward side, in my town of Kailua and the next town over Waimanalo, are far superior to Waikiki. Waikiki is fun for a couple days, but you might consider Ubering over to spend the day on this side for one of your three days. These photos were from yesterday and this morning at Kailua beach.

Trip to Waikiki
I'll be body boarding up there tomorrow. The Turtle Bay poolside bar which is open to the public is amazing. The view is spectacular. Food isn't bad, but you're paying for the view. There's a pretty large food truck park in Kahuku. Lots of good options there. Haleiwa has lots of good options as well. Haleiwa Joes is always great and has a pretty rad view. Lots of food trucks in Haleiwa as well. Seven Brothers burgers, which has locations both in Haleiwa and the Kahuku food truck park is really good. Maya's Tapas in Haleiwa has a really good menu. For eating cheap, I'm a fan of Foodland's prepared food section including solid Poke. There's one on each end of the North Shore. Tamura's liquor store also has a really good poke selection. Enjoy your trip.

Bump. Headed there in a week for 10 days. Hopefully China doesn't invade while I'm there. Any new stuff to see/do since the last post in 2018?- The Portugal Thread
I just did my third trip to Portugal in January. Lisbon and Porto are both amazing. It's a 3 hour train ride in each direction, so I'd recommend staying one night in Porto. On my recent trip I stopped in Coimbra on the way to Porto for a day. It's an incredible town/small city and really worth visiting if only for a half day stop on the train ride to/from Porto. The NYT has it on their 52 places to visit list for 2025 which is how I learned of it. https://blog.winetourismportugal.com/coimbra-the-destination-to-visit-in-2025-according-to-the-new-york-times#:~:text=Coimbra%2C a historic city in,blend of tradition and modernity.- Markets still falling like whoa
Definitely capital protection for the time being. But I would like my nest egg to keep up with inflation while I become comfortable with the basics of investing and wait for this volatility to hopefully subside.- Markets still falling like whoa

I'm selling a commercial property soon and may be investing in something other than property for the first time in my life. Is there a realistic investing approach that is low to medium risk that can achieve say 7 to 10% annual returns accounting for the current turmoil? Is it worth getting a financial adviser or whatever to manage funds or do they just eat up a couple percent doing what a savvy individual can do on their own at relatively low risk?- Munich: Oktoberfest
I did it twice back in my drinking days years ago. Back then at least you could wander into any tent and find a bit of empty space at the hundreds of picnic tables. The crowd was very international. We spent most of our time in a Paulaner tent and shared a table with some wild Japanese dudes who didn't speak English and had a lot of fun standing on the tables singing gibberish Bavarian drinking songs with our new friends. A server would come to the table periodically with liter steins of beer and we paid as we went, maybe with tickets but I don't recall. The restrooms are massive with super efficient ladies commanding you to each pisser or stall. Lines move fast. I made it through about 2.5 one-liter steins and then woke up at my rental with no recollection of how I got there. I stayed in a cheap Airbnb at the Olympic village where the athletes stayed during whatever Olympics which was cool. They have a great metro system that makes it easy to get around Munich, so you should have a pretty good variety of options depending on your budget. I would suggest booking a place sooner than later because it's a super popular event.- Shart 2025: The Shitshow We Deserve
Loading an SUV with a large group of kids to go skiing. I get out to allow the kids in to the back and figure it's a good time to let out a bit of gas. Wearing very light colored sweat pants. My breakfast of three cups of coffee, a couple apples, and a fiber breakfast bar had different plans. - Taiwan
