Quinn "La Joya" Ewers - The Man The Myth The Mullet, Now Starting for the Miami Dolphins
It looks as though PFF tagged him with 2 drops in the championship game. If that was 1, they may have given Ewers a BTT too. I don’t think either of those were the case. It was certainly catchable. Even though the defender did not hit the ball, he was a distraction and possible he could have obstructed Goldens vision for a moment. I need to watch it again but thought there was room to put it out front of Golden. A good example of a play that’s there and can win you a game.

Hey PK -- What would you say you do here?
It’s uptick in talent but more so an uptick in health and experience. Barron was taken advantage of versus TCU, UW and missed half Houston. He was a menace to opponents in 2022 and 2024 but not so much in 2023. Health was probably the first difference. Taaffe is more experienced. It is an uptick in pass rush but also pass rush contain. The LB coverage was probably more consistent as well. And our opponents offensive talent/experience is pretty weak particularly at QB but also Oline and WR. It is all those things.

Here’s an interesting stat. Your Texas Longhorns led the SEC in rushing yards per attempt at 4.63. There was a tie for 2nd best at 4.38. Arkansas was 8th in the conference at 4.03. These are in-conference, regular season games. I didn’t drill down to see the conference impact but did note that of the top 10 QBs in terms of total yardage on the season there were 3 with negative yards rushing. Beck, Nussmeier, Ewers. Milroe for example had about an 800 yard net impact over us. Dart was around 500. So we led the conference in in-conference rushing yards per attempt even considering our QB run game was not a positive reflector of the run game like it was for others. My point is not to advocate one QB over another. The point is that relatively speaking our run game has been quite reliable and the run blocking reasonably good. No doubt it can be better.

Yes, yes I am.

You need to start with the assumption that DCs want to present different looks occasionally. Or that they wish to present similar looks presnap but different post snap looks. Simple math in my point says that the RB and S meet 3 yards beyond the line of scrimmage. 3 yards per rush is considered successful. That’s almost what Wisner had, and he had more in game 1. By the way we were successful versus Vandy, two backs at 4.5+ per carry.

You are being pretty literal here. For example UGa had a S 10 yards off the ball with no WR to his side. Our RB 7 yards off the ball. That S can easily play run whether he is in the box. Theres no way you compare a tight formation on 3rd and 1 to 1st and 10. I also thought Kirby was giving us different looks to keep us confused.

They had 5 defensive guys drafted from that defense in 2022. Musta had some talent, some experience anyway.

Casey Thompson threw for 388 and 5 TDs against a double digit win OU team. But lost.

So you care about total yards or what? “Seemed like.” Just to pick a few examples off the top of my head. Milroe and JT Daniels threw more picks versus us than anyone else last season or the season before. Daniels threw for 400 yards the week after he lit us up for 150. Bean and Slovis, both spent some time on NFL practice squads, had amongst their very worst days of the season - yards, QBR. Wyo had a buck something passing plus a pick 6. Gabriel had about 7 or so games with more yards passing. No pass rush. Hoover started 6 games. 4 were for more yards passing than us. Baylor had 300 passing but 6 points. 100 yards passing on last 2 drives, down 30. Houston, OU, UW had a meager pass rush or simply lost contain on quite a few big plays. Of the 100 top NFL draft picks last year, quick count showed there were 48 offensive players selected. 15 were on our schedule. That doesn’t include your starting WRs in Bond and Golden. Or Milroe or Howard or Gabriel. Id be surprised if historically you’d find a Longhorn schedule that had more collective offensive talent than last years schedule. But that’s how that DFEI rankings was achieved. And just for comparisons sake Texas Tech in 2008 and USC in 2005 scored more points than UW did last year.

In stride? You’d look pretty awkward with your hips dropped and knees bent like that if you normally walked in that manner. It was catchable for sure but a great pass would have actually been in stride.

So was curious about the relative strength of opponents defenses ODA @bcftoys.com. 2021 - 45 2022 - 29 2023 - 36 2024 - 31 Not drastic differences there.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/42213830/2024-college-football-kickers-history-making-field-goals From earlier this year, kickers make 62% beyond 40 yards. 88% less than 40. I would guess to make 2 with one beyond 40 and one beyond 50 is around the 33% chance of happening.

Bolden was higher but only on 5 plays. It is a team loss. As codaxx said, lots of opportunities for plays. No one made that play to push us over the top. For PFF, one thing I’d say is that it’s best to compare position to position. Several weeks ago, I looked and there were about as many QBs over 90 as all other positions combined. And my general observation is many guys take hits to their grade as competition increases. I think that’s less impactful to QBs as it’s less about matchup for them. Course they put some voodoo on the final numbers so part is certainly unknown.

SEC Refs Suck
I used to watch college basketball all the time. Now almost never. For much of the same reason. The announcers were talking about that Clemson play being a designed run. The SMU S came up reading run. Two linemen 4-5 yards downfield. Pretty terrible. The eye in the sky is a must for football officiating.

Texas O-line talk
Overall pass blocking grade is 93.0. Best in the land. Number two is 87.4. Obviously, our grade is inflated. Course last year we were 3rd at 86.8 so probably inflated.

FINAL 2024 CFB polls/rankings - Texas #3/ #4 /#3 (CFP/AP/Coaches)
We’re not being penalized. Talking bs some about us? Yeah. We scheduled well what we control. And thing is we dominated damn near everyone. What two teams ever had possession in the 4th either leading or with the ability to take the lead (I think Vandy would have had to covert the 2 to do that)? That’s pretty uncommon. But in the end, the schedule wasn’t that great. We got UF without a Qb. OU had the backup in. We’re winning those two anyway but maybe they were closer. I’m not sure where the cut line would be from Tier 1 to Tier 2, but we’re a definite top tier team. The terrible matchup for us like you said is Georgia. Because two games is enough.

FINAL 2024 CFB polls/rankings - Texas #3/ #4 /#3 (CFP/AP/Coaches)
OFEI and FPI Offensive efficiency have Arkansas in the 40s, which have Arkansas defense ranked higher than their offense. Georgia top 10 in both offensively. If you believe in such things.

Quinn "La Joya" Ewers - The Man The Myth The Mullet, Now Starting for the Miami Dolphins
In my opinion he’s gotten more out of us than us out of him. i get the sentiment, but I disagree that he’s made a huge difference in the roster. Sark, NIL and all the efforts that the unknown persons made, fans and other players that really define the program more than him. That is not to say he hasn’t made a positive impact on the roster but just like the wins he’s as much the beneficiary because of the name on the front of the jersey and the program. Guys like Alfred Collins and Vernon Broughton and Jahdae Barron have had massive impacts this season and beat him to campus all the while showing some patience and perseverance. While QB may be the most important position, you simply will not win unless the totality of the parts are pretty damn good. People are enamored with the trait of his arm but at the end of the day, he’s not making more, better throws than other QBs. But he doesn’t have to do so. 90% of the throws are pretty basic, every day throws. Against the Aggies, he made several off schedule plays that were difference makers. That’s a big plus for what we need out of him. So I look forward to this thread if we win it all but will be annoyed at the same time. We simply have the best, deepest roster we’ve had in my lifetime.

Appreciate the response. I’m curious about people’s experiences in that we could actually learn from others. Know quite a few UMHB folks too. in the end, the timing is off for whatever anyone wants to attribute it.

So were you a TE or what Mr. College Football? I’m genuinely asking with a hint of smartass. Using the UF TD as an example, I’m not sure he got his head around as quickly on that TD as the ball was released this time. I’d venture to say that ball was out quicker than you typically see.

I’m not talking about a designated hot route but more of a head nod to Helm to say it’s coming your way. In the end, they weren’t on the same page whatever the reason may be. itd be great to hear a specific discussion on the play.

Quinn "La Joya" Ewers - The Man The Myth The Mullet, Now Starting for the Miami Dolphins
This is point guard Ewers. When it works, it looks great otherwise WTH. He’s anticipating Helms move but Helm is not anticipating his. He’s likely going off script because he knows Helm catches it and gets upfield for the 1st. I think he’s right except Helm isn’t on that off-script play.

What stat did I use to say Arch was better than Ewers? I’ve never asked for Arch to be the guy, not even said he should be brought in. I have said that we can win with both. I did previously quote some Quinn numbers in relation to his ranks on the intermediate range throughout the entire country. I did reference that Ewers first start was against a shittier ULM team than Arch’s first start against a not good ULM team. You will pretty much never hear me say a player sucks. You won’t hear me say player X shouldn’t play or should never see the field. One cause it’s shitty and two because I don’t know what the coaches are asking of them. I try to not even do that for former players or opponents. Any stat I throw out a stat is open for discussion. It’s a team game same as it’s always been. Over the long term, the best TEAM wins. Every player who ever played has screws up. I haven’t played in 30 years and I can remember tons of specific plays that I absolutely messed up. ”bad faith?” Yeah, doesn’t happen.

Let’s start with Boley. Decent day. As for the pick, it was 3rd and 32 with 40 seconds left. There weren’t really many options. For that day, he was better than Vandergrift. You’re acting as though he lost his mind due to pressure. Now for batted balls. I personally don’t give a shit. Chip or not both those plays were dead in the water. Throw it away. But again, you throw one play in your critique video, but the other you explained what should have happened. Generally speaking, tipped balls are due the play call and finding windows. There aren’t many QBs that can throw a slant, RPO over the head of a lineman, that raises his arms or maybe even jumps. You need to find the window. And the lineman needs to keep them engaged to keep the hands down. So any 1-2% variation that may result impacts me very little. As for the stats, you have a tendency to talk down to some of us. Damn near any stat I’ll throw out is with a practical consideration based on years of watching, playing, observing. Hell, I watch too much and spend way too much time on it. With respect to the running game, it’s been there every SEC game for us except Georgia when we really didn’t give it a chance. You’ve referenced going 5-wide. Pretty sure the opening drive of the 2nd half we ran the ball 4 plays in a row, got a first then had a 2 WR route to kick start that drive. That 2.5 to 3 yards a carry was not spectacular but effective. So, yes, I’m well aware all stats need context.
