  1. There are lots of them especially in wildland firefighting. They bid on fires and then go do the job. They still have to have certifications. There are also private fire departments depending on where you live. In some states in unincorporated areas people pay subscriptions for fire department services.

  7. Still doesn’t make sense to me. More info needed but a single engine landing is not extreme. I am going to bet that cultural issues in the cockpit played a role in this.
