I think that is bit tougher than people think. He is running under center and turning his back. He needs to throw that with touch, because 22 in under the route. There is room there to do it. He just cannot throw it on a line. It is a missed opportunity, but I would rather he forego it than completely miss the defender under the receiver and turn it into a turnover.
I think in the short game, 1st read Ewers was elite. His throws in the screen game were great. Ewers was not great in the intermediate last year at all. Arch was struggling in the intermediate, but that has gotten better so we shall see.
OU DL is very good, but they dont really anchor well. They are movement-based DL. All those line games make them vulnerable to zone concepts. The crazy thing i noticed in this game is how many times Brooks is 20+ yards down field. That guy can fucking move given how big he is. Funny to see a 6'7" 350 chasing the RB just busting his ass trying to find more work.
I dont think the results would have been much different. Lot more sacks and a few more completions. I do not think the gameplan would have been the same though.
he did that with 25 pressures on 27 attempted passes, that is what was impressive. Even with the dink and dunk offense, he wasnt throwing from a clean pocket. Those 25 pressures only netted a single sack on the day
You can only assume he pumped it, because he thought 22 was under the route in the window. He has to throw that over him, there is room. Think that was more a confidence thing, than not seeing it. He hit that same play for a TD to Livingstone earlier this year.
Release times are function of game plan and mobility. Qbs that can move and buy time tend to have higher numbers. Think about that 3rd down dot to Livingstone. I am sure getting flushed and throwing outside the pocket took 3 seconds, but is that a bad thing? Vs Florida there were a lot of max protects and deeper routes. I only remember one deep shot attempt vs OU and that was the only sack. Counter-intuitive, but Texas is worse in protection with max protection. It is a solid data point when looking at a QB, but there are variables that need to be considered.
He gets little credit for his work in the pocket. He is very good at making the first rusher miss. This is different game with another QB. Texas offensive line's pressure rate is 40.9%, which is the worst in the SEC and 124th nationally. Compare that to last year where "the Texas Longhorns offensive line allowed pressure on 25.8 percent of drop backs, which was the 29th best rate in the FBS. Sack numbers are way down (1.7 vs 2.3) this year, despite the substantially more pressure and so are the turnovers from the position.
I think on 2nd watch the OL will not grade very well. Run game was a lot Wisner making individual plays. Pass pro was leaky. It was better, but still a lot of work to do
OL still has a lot of work to do. I said this was the most physical I have ever seen Wisner run. He had 94 yards after contact in this game rushing, lot of those were legit contact (not weak arm tackles on a cut). 100% of his rushing stats came after contact. That masked a lot of issues on the OL. He was huge reason the Texas offense stayed on schedule
OU is vulnerable to OZ. They love to slant and go live games. Those can be used against them in OZ. They can get vertical and open up holes underneath. Crazy to think, but Texas has relied on the run game recently vs OU
Lot of OZ and duo.. honestly, the OL looked better. Wisner made a couple runs that overcame the blocking also. I’ll wait until a second watch, but I thought DJ Campbell played angry today. Love rivalry games, everyone that needed to step up in RRS did
Have to give Sark some credit. He played full breaks and no gas early in this game. Once Texas got behind the chains it was screen city. Sark playing to get to the 2nd half on the backs of the defense was unexpected and it had to be killing him not to call shot plays.
Offense executing on long drives has to be the biggest shocker in this game. Penalties got cleaned up in the second half. Arch made some nice 3rd down plays. Not going to look, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Texas had more 8+ play drives in this game, than they had all season.
I don’t think he catches the ball. I think people look at these and make the assumption that the exact reaction will occur. That DB will be all over the WR, if Arch is looking at the WR and even makes a hint of throwing it to him. He is 5 off with hips parallel to the LOS and coming down and Arch isn’t even looking that direction. He is in great position. The QB has to go through the motion of throwing and the ball has to travel 20 yards. He isn’t catching the ball. I was merely saying even if he did, he will be short
I believe it was 3rd and 8 from the 14. 14+8=22, perhaps it was 3rd and 10 and I am slightly off on the numbers. Biggest point is the WR breaks the route off 3 yards before the sticks. Forward progress is a big assumption. WR has no momentum. He is stopped or heading towards the QB. DB is coming down with momentum.
4 yards came from breaking off his stop at the 19 and if he runs it correctly he is coming back to the ball, so he should catch it at the 18. He would need 4 more yards. This is why I said the play call sucks and the stops look like a GDGD call. Running a 10 yards stop on 3rd and 8 makes sense. Running 5 yard stops is dumb
