Need the collective Austin surly wisdom here. A good friend’s son is getting married in Austin in September. She has to host the rehearsal dinner for 30-50. As the bride has chosen TexMex for the wedding reception dinner, she is thinking barbecue. She is in SoCal so is asking for a little help on recs. It’s her only child and she doesn’t want to fuck it up.
so: barbecue
30-50 guests
Can be at restaurant or catered to a venue. Location somewhat irrelevant.
An old lady lived across the street from us in my youth. Estranged from her crazy daughter. She had over 30 cats in her house. You could smell it in the street. She died. The cats ate most of her.
the worst are feral cats and the fucked up folks that harbor them. Begging on Nextdoor for food for their colony. Ihhh if they’re feral they’re wild. You just have a flock of outside cats eating your food. They are an ecodisaster right up with feral hogs, zebra mussels, tegu lizards, and fire ants. The shelters spend good dog money on sterilizing feral cats instead of processing them into food for the dogs. Should be open season on them all year long.
My son says he wants first right of refusal on it. I think he’s quieted that, thinking he’ll get it when I die. I might just sell it if I got the right price
Agreed but I prefer peach preserves or strawberry preserves. Or blackberry jelly, strained of seeds. Jam is the spam of the jelly world. Rooters and rooters, or the fruit equivalent, is in jam. The worst fucking thing is fig preserves. It’s like shit in a mason jar.
I got a patty melt at the drive thru a couple days ago. I paid no attention and drove home. The burger was excellent, with my added grilled jalapeños. But surprise a bag bonus. A spicy chicken sandwich, customized with toast, raw onion, jack cheese, grilled jalapeños added. It was also excellent . Never had their chicken sandwich. This was good. Hope it wasn’t your special order.
Hour 8 was so fucking tough to get thru. My only fear in life is losing a kid or grandchild. 3 in this ep alone. Powerful acting. Taylor Darden playing Dr Mel tore it up with her subtle powerful acting…uhh Bryan Cranston’s daughter. This is a great show and it got renewed.
Monty needs to sign up for the 600lb show in Houston. He’s gotta be hitting 500 lbs. he’s beyond SOTA. He’ll be dead before you know it if he stays with that; he’s eating 8000 calories a day to maintain.
I love great sourdough but most is insipid. I like it toasted with a garlic butter and coarse salt. Or with biskoff cookie butter and bacon. Or with homemade lebneh and Miramar’s and lemon zest.
All our dogs will be there to greet us when our time comes. I take comfort in that. Sorry you went thru that but dogs endure, and he loved you to his final moment. He’s in your heart living only his best days.
May be for the heb thread but I anticipated with the store in Mansfield they’d have really good cheese enchiladas in the ready to go section or at least In frozen foods. Nada. Am I looking g in the wrong place?
I love Chicago foods but everywhere I’ve lived the joints typically opened by Chicago expats just dont cut it. So Portillo’s fills a void and I am glad we have in DFW now because it’s very good though not great. It’s like I might not eat at Rudy’s in Texas much, but had there been one when I lived in the Bay Area or Portland I would have been thankful for it.
i eat at the one on Cooper about once a month. I have found that eating it there is way better than takeout. There are several things I get there that are really good. Italian beef is exceptional. I get it hot, sweet, half dip. I sometimes get it as the combo with an Italian sausage tucked in there but I’ve about decided I like it best as just a beef sandwich.
the hot dogs are very good (I skip the tomato and pickle spear and double the sport peppers) but I usually go with the Maxwell Street Polish with sweet and sport peppers.
the burgers should be great as they are charbroiled but both times I got them they were overcooked and ashy.
next door are two awful joints. Jolibee weirdass philipino fried chicken and weenie spaghetti, and Nations burgers which suck.
if you’re looking for other Chitown joints…Weinberger’s in Grapevine is a great Chicago deli and may be the best sandwich place in Texas. In Venus, Biundo’s has perfect Chicago tavern style thin crust pizza. They have the deep dish and red gravy pasta but that thin crust pizza is killer.
I live less than 10 minutes away from Hurtado and have eaten his bbq since his food truck. The brisket is great, love his tacos and different sausages. Those tortillas made with the brisket tallow will know your dick in the dirt. The cornbread is very inconsistent ranging from Texas treasure to hockey puck. I am concerned about his expansion and dilution of quality being a 7 day operation.
i also live 10 minutes from Goldee’s, 225, Off the Bone, and soon to be Roy Hutchins. Where do I mostly eat? The OG…David’s. (Nephew of Sonny Bryan) Old school with a drive thru. Great choice brisket $20/lb. Fantastic ham and turkey $15/lb which I buy instead of deli meats. Ribs $16.99 /lb. (Typical old timey Texas ribs…not my favorite)
I remember Dr No when I was 5. My parents took me and I was hooked. Secret agents were hot from TV and Bond movies in the 60’s. My favorite movie of the franchise is still On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. Would have been the top of all if Connery had played the role.
Malt Shop, a drive in in Weatherford since 1958 was to be closed by the retiring owner, but she sold it to a local who’s going to refurb it and keep it going.
