Dallas | Fried Chicken
It's Bbbop in Oak Cliff for me. I love fried chicken and have tried all the usual places. Their "not your mama's fried chicken" is the best. I like the chili version, but usually order it naked and get the sauces on the side.

Surly’s list of Dallas top 25 restaurants
We went Mamani for a birthday dinner this week. I know there was a lot of pearl clutching when it got its star after being open only a few weeks and with only a 2 week Michelin review time window. The reasoning was that the French chef was well known from Joel Rubuchon in Las Vegas and they could immediately tell that he brought it. My verdict is that the star is deserved. Wow! What a meal. It was perfect. The service was personal (called us by names on the reservation, every single person who approached the table acknowledged the birthday in a low key way, a personal note on the table, ...) and professional and flawless. The cocktails were superb. The wine list may be the best in Dallas. And each dish was truly excellent. It was impossible for us to pick our favorites, although the Paris-Brest dessert was memorable because I had seen the bakers try to make that dessert on British Bake Off and never thought I would actually have one. It's a big and expensive night out, but put it on your special occasion list. Suggestion: there are some tables in the lobby area, including two that are close to and face the kitchen. Get one of those. They are not in the fancy formal dining room. The cold air when the door opens will hit you. You are essentially in the lobby, but it is all worth it to watch the brigade in kitchen and hear the French chefs call out orders and the responses. The chef came over to check on us a couple of times. It was quite a show if you like that sort of thing.

Dallas | Steak
For me (because I don’t do it often), a big night a steakhouse is about the experience as much as it is about what I eat and drink. At the highest level, the top Dallas steakhouses will deliver on food on and wine. That’s why Pappas Bros is not for me. I went to a few business dinners there and that location just brought me down. Al Biernet’s and Dakota’s are my go to’s That being said, we went to Evelyn a while back and damn, it was great. Hollywood glam, disco music, people dressed up. It was a fun night out and the food, especially the steak, was spot on. We booked it for our anniversary.

Gimme your DFW Metroplex "big night" go-to restaurants
We’ve done fun staycations at the W. Pool scene is great and nearby to Victory restaurants. But pool club at the Virgin also looks fun too

Gimme your DFW Metroplex "big night" go-to restaurants
Add Evelyn to your list. We had dinner there Friday and damn, we can’t wait to back. Everything (but for the creamed spinach) was terrific. We are two guys who qualify for AARP and still enjoyed the music and vibe. It’s one of those restaurants that is also a lounge but it works. By 8:30 a DJ had kicked in playing all 70s and 80s, our groove. We stayed for an extra drink after dinner. Great people watching. The cheesesteak bite appetizer was great. The wedge was perfect (although not in wedge form, which made it easier to share) and the steak (bone in strip from some farm in ND) was just right. Service was professional and friendly and the wine list was interesting and approachable with fair pricing. Recommend.

Netflix Recommendations
“Trainwreck: Poop Cruise” was a well done, cringy , not too long, documentary of the Carnival Triumph - the ship that lost all power in the Gulf, resulting in pee and poop flowing through the ship. Absolutely horrendous situation.

San Miguel de Allende
Atrio’s rooftop view at the Parrocchia is better than Quince and the food is outstanding.

Gimme your DFW Metroplex "big night" go-to restaurants
What a shame. We did the tasting menu last fall and it was excellent. We were rooting for Georgie to get a star. It will be interesting to see what they do next. These chefs can be rockstars. And they have the same problems. Troubled chef is out at Georgie

Pee Wee as Himself
Excellent documentary. Everything about it was well done and the story is very interesting to me (Gen X).

We are enjoying it. There is something relatable about all the characters and their relationship situations (even though, yes, they are all annoying) and there is a good balance between funny and cringy. Although I see the comparison to Big Chill for Gen X, I can't compare the two because of the music. Four Seasons understandably sticks to The Four Seasons rather than period music, which is a shame.

Dog sitting overnight
That's what we pay for 2 dogs, with house sitting, watering and all that. We get texts with pictures every morning and evening. And by monitoring doors opening and closing, we can see how much time she is spending with them, letting them out, etc. And it's great.

Dallas 2025
I live in North Oak Cliff, so..... Hugo's is a small seafood place in Bishop Arts with an outstanding cocktail program (two Hugos opened it: one the chef, one the mixologist). We have already been twice. Small, focused menu. Everything is fresh and the execution (cooking or raw) is well done. Definitely recommend. Pillar in the old Boulevardier space. It's very good food, but for those of us that loved Boulevardier, it just isn't the same. The oyster happy hour will always be missed. Mayor's House is already a favorite. Turkish food in a beautiful space with actual Turkish staff, most are very good looking. Jaquval is good and Trades next door is a great sandwich shop too. Pane Nostro also in Bishop Arts is very good, but basic Italian. It's nothing adventurous, but the pasta is house made, the service is excellent and the atmosphere (especially the patio) is very nice. They moved down from McKinney, I believe. Cenzo's. For you pizza lovers, this is worth a try. Great, chef driven pizza and amazing sandwiches. Family friendly lawn in a nice neighborhood spot in Winnetka Heights.

Weird Grass Fungus (?)
Something weird is growing on my Zoysia. It started small and is growing like a fungus. My lawn guy called it “hongo” (fungus or mushroom). It is rock hard, as in it would take more than a shovel to even break it up. Any ideas?
