I need your help once again.  My Uncle wants to get my Aunt a beginner guitar.  She's inspired by the Ken Burns special and loves blues.  He asked me to send him some links.

Budget:  $100-150.  This is the challenge.

She's small, so a parlor or something like that would probably be the size to aim for.  Thanks in advance for any ideas you may have.

Thats a tough price range. I bought a Jasmine a couple years ago for $99 that turned out to be decent. But they are hit or miss. I also bought a $150 Yamaha a while back that warped all to hell. $300 is a better price point if they can swing it. Still laminate vs wood but it’ll be more playable and consistent.

Depending on how small she is, a 3/4 scale Yamaha could be just the ticket. They are usually considered "kid's" guitars but they actually play and sound pretty good. Especially for just starting out. I would budget a bit to get any guitar set up. Most of the guitars in that price range have the action pretty high. A little adjustment and it will likely be a lot more fun for her.

My son started on this one. I found it fun to play as well.

Thanks all!  I've suggested the Yamahas. I might be able to get him to come up a bit in budget.  If so, I'll be back with more questions or go the Seagull route.

My $300 Yamaha FG830 is a really great guitar for the price.

Gonna put my Epi '56 Les Paul with P-90's, in Chicago Blue, up for sale for $400. I'll give any Surly Guitar Pron member a $100 discount.

I might take you up on that. You in Austin?

Squier Bullet Telecaster.  Beautiful, classic looking tele, plays great, holds tuning well, just a blast to play.

I have the butterscotch, but have been tempted to get the Lake Placid Blue since it came out, currently $119 on sale at MF.

Here are the rest in the lineup.

Is that a snakeskin Parker Fly? Weird.

And Yamaha is the answer for a beginner guitar. I’ve had my $150 dreadnought for 30 years. Great campfire guitar.

Would love to play that 12 string Gretsch.  Never heard one through those pickups.

It sounded great.  All jangly like it should.  Can't recall the tunes they used it on.

So, internet sales tax fixin' to start next month.

===

Who will have to collect Texas sales tax?

Like all other states that impose a sales tax collection obligation on remote sellers, Texas is providing an exception (safe harbor) for small sellers. The new collection requirement applies only to remote sellers whose total Texas revenue exceeds $500,000 in the preceding 12 calendar months.

This thread alone probably puts Sweetwater and Musiciansfriend over that threshold.

PA Question.

Has anyone used one of those all-in-one PA setups.  I just need something inexpensive to practice.

- Two mics
- Two guitars (Probably direct in)
- One bass (probably direct in)

Fender Passport Event:  7 inputs (easily mobile)
https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PassEvent--fender-audio-passport-event

Yamaha Equivalent
https://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-STAGEPAS-Portable-Speaker-Polishing/dp/B07BZ77KT6/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=yamaha+pa&qid=1569350457&s=gateway&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExS1E5VEtFRlhBNzhWJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMzUwMDA3NUJXU01PQVVHM1JQJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA0MjA4NjQyUDVIOENBSklOODZPJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==

Or go this route.  Essentially mixer/inputs are on the back and you daisy chain another speaker.  We can probably even get by with just one for now and if we need more inputs, just put a small compact mixer in front of it.

Much better for twice the price
https://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/jbl-eon-612-1000-watt-powered-12-two-way-loudspeaker-system-with-bluetooth-control?rNtt=jbl eon one&index=3

Or buy separate components.

My local GC also has the $1,000 version of that Fender Passport for $800 (has a few scratches/dents on it)

Thoughts?

I would just get powered speaker(s) and a small mixer. For $1k you can get two great powered speakers and a 6 or 8 channel Yamaha mixer.

For a little more you can get QSC 12.2 speakers which are bad ass.

Unloading another LP. Epiphone Les Paul Tribute Plus. Gibson '57 Classics, hardshell case included. $450.

Yeah, good powered speakers can typically be daisy-chained so you can even run a single mix to one and then send to the next.  Keep it simple.

Somewhere I have a little Mackie 1202 mixer that's been to hell and back and still functions great.  I bet you can get one for $100 or so.

I use this one for solo acoustic stuff - can do two guitars and two mics.

Thinned the herd by one guitar and one amp today. Thanks, Handcruser. Hope some kid who aspires to become the next great player gets a start from that amp.

Sold a guitar, donated the amp.

Those ES-345’s are cool. Here’s one of my favorite goofballs showing off a Bigsby version. I was briefly infatuated by the little riff he plays at 2:48.

I've seen a lot of incredible things at Continental Club, but I'm not plugged in well enough to hardly ever learn when things like that are going down.  I heard about it the next day and sank into a deep depression.

Holy shit.  A ton of Austin talent right there.  Fukunaga and Pulkingham.

Can't remember if I've told this story about Glenn Fukunaga -- I was working on some recordings for Alejandro Escovedo and Glenn came in to lay down a bass part.  He told me to roll the track as it currently existed, and held up a little Walkman cassette recorder, taping the basic track off its built-in microphone.  Then he rewound the tape, and played the track back at double speed, nodding his head and clearly making mental notes.  We plugged him in to a DI box, he said "roll tape", I did, and he nailed the part perfectly.  One take, with his knowledge of the track primarily coming from a chipmunk-sounding version of the tune that he made himself with a shitty little cassette recorder.

To say I was dumbfounded would be to put it mildly.

Oh, by the way, that's Dony Wynn on drums -- y'all might know  him from his two decades with Robert Palmer ("Addicted To Love", etc.).

Just ordered a Yamaha Pacifica 611. I don't have a guitar with P-90's in my collection and I've read good things about the guitar.

My first electric guitar was a Yamaha double cutaway.  It was actually quite good.  I don't know about the Pacificas, but I dig the look of that one.  Well, except for the logo.

I lived in Argentina a while and couldn't bring my guitar with me.  Wound up making friends with a fellow who loaned me one just like this:

Perfectly good guitar that one.
