So is it just me, or did anyone else get more and more addicted to hybrid picking as they got older? I pretty much 100% flat picked in my youth, but these days I swear I hybrid pick damn near everything that isn't straight power chords. I wonder if it has to do with mellowing with age or something.

I've always just fingerpicked. I try with a pick, but I just like the feel and sound better without one.

I am transforming more and more into a finger picker.  I mean, I’ll still use a pick but it’s maybe 10% of the time.  As for age, I think for me it’s more that my interests and focus has changed over time.  I am pretty ambivalent about flat picking 32nd notes and more interested in meaningful/memorable melody and note articulation these days.  I’ll still play quick lines, but it’s mostly fingerpicked legato.  Along with this are triads and arpeggios that are more economically played fingerstyle or hybrid picking.

100% pick for me. I have sort of invented my own pseudo-finger picking style (meaning I can pretty much hit the individual strings I want, while letting the others ring) but all with a pick.

I use the rounded side of the pick.  I much prefer it to the "correct way."

OK, @Al_4_ISU tipped me off to this live performance but my question is more appropriate here.

What is Isbell doing towards the end of his solo?  Solo starts ~ 3:00, and at one point he drops down below his capo and bends a string.  Is he trying to pull it into tune or is it possible that string isn't actually capo'ed?  Some kind of partial capo?

That's kinda wild.  I didn't think you could effectively sound a string above the capo.

I don't play with capos, my ear can't handle the disconnect between chord shape and pitch.  If I pluck behind the nut it certainly doesn't sound good.  But, just stretching the string behind the nut does change the tension and drives it sharp.  Why do it there, though?

Beats the hell out of me.

But Jason Isbell and I are both guitar players in the same way that Aaron Donald and I were both defensive linemen.

He didn't pluck behind the nut.  He did a bend and plucked the open string below the capo, which sounded like a steel or b/g-bender when he released the bend.  Slick move.

Oh wait, so it's a way to bend an unfretted string?  Damn clever.

Dude I can’t play bass.

I’m going to try and learn.

Make sure that the first thing you learn is Big Bottoms

Going to take to my bass tech guy and get it all set up, flats, whatever.

I already don’t like the saddles. Rosewood or mahogany or some shit. It was the only “issue” I could find but we’ll see.

Basically yeah

Remember (prob not) when I came to see you play in East Austin one night and you told me to get there at 9 so I got there at 9 and you were putting up your gear so I got to see zilch?

Wheres this? I saw you in a similar looking room in Santa Cruz around then. I had smoked a joint then had to drive over the winding Santa Cruz mountain in the rain to get there. That was a bad idea. You guys killed it though and the Matchless sounded great You had no idea where you were. You asked me if you were closer to SF or LA haha.

Hahaha yeah very little idea of where we were. It was beautiful though - stayed at I don’t even know whose house in Santa Cruz and they had a patio that hung over a big green valley. I think that might have been the last night I smoked weed, could barely make it to my sleeping bag. Glad I got to meet you for a bit there. That picture above was at…. The Summit in Denver. We left from there to head home, got stuck in the snow somewhere for what seemed like hours, and ate breakfast at a Waffle House in Lubbock.
