(in reference to jimmy's post about a gutted esquire)

I'm sure not everyone's cup of tea but I posted a while back about trying to figure out what guitar the singer from Manchester Orchestra plays to find out that it's a gutted tele with a seymour duncan little bucker in the bridge wired straight to the output jack

it sounds like it started as a regular telecaster (I dunno when he put the bucker in) but then devolved into "take everything out so that nothing can break" over the course of heavy touring and then he found that he liked the signal boost of having nothing at all between the pickup and the output. It's an interesting idea, although seemingly necessitates a volume pedal and/or a tuner/something to kill the signal between the guitar and the amp

on warped.... or maybe it was a tour following warped I remember getting really frustrated with scratchiness and weird shit going on, trying to constantly clean all of the sweat off and spray shit down with deoxit. i can see how you'd wind up liking a really simple setup like that

If you have one with a neck pickup and one with a bridge pickup it gives you an excuse to have more guitars.

The neck pickup on my tele is pretty killer, but I find myself reaching for my strat when I want that single-coil neck sound.

I am Keith Richards Tele neck humbucker curious, though.

There are suspicions that the humbucker in the neck of Keef's Tele isn't even wired up.

Didn’t Micawber originally have some oddball (Fender?) lap steel ‘bucket, or am I just confusing it with the Coodercaster?

Re the Fender Lap Steel, the old Fender Champion Lap Steels had the same pick up as the early Teles.  Many have been robbed of said pickup.  I think that may be what you're thinking of here.  Micawber and Champions likely had the same bridge pick up.

I have an old Champion and can verify.

Happy 108th birthday, Les Paul.

Thanks for everything.

Who's the latest "best" setup guy/gal for a Telecaster in Austin?

So one of the first days we ever played together, she sang a version of Sting’s Fields of Gold which she rewrote the lyrics for her dad who was a 3rd gen farmer in rural North Dakota. She said I’m going to sing this at his funeral.

Well that day is Friday and I have to play with her. I honestly don’t know if I can do it. He was such a great guy.

Yeah, I don’t know how someone can perform from such an emotionally proximal place.  Like Clapton’s “Tears from Heaven”.  If I were in his shoes, I could never play that live.  They’d have to help me offstage immediately after.  I’m guessing some people are wired to where embracing that emotion would be cathartic.  For me it would be overwhelming.

Sorry for her and your loss.  Good luck with the performance.

Ugh.  Hang in there.  I have to accompany my daughter at my father in law's service on the 29th.  He was a big Leonard Cohen fan, so it will be one of his songs, but I'm not sure "Hallelujah" is appropriate (except for the fact he loved it).  Looking for recs . . .

Thanks for all the thoughts.

There’s a bunch a verses you can pick for that song to make it what you want. We might do it too. I think it’s good, especially if he liked it.

I told her the first day she shouldn’t wait until the funeral to play that for him but she said it would make him uncomfortable. I came to understand that later. He was one seriously stoic Viking farmer.

I have no idea how she’s going to do it. But if she can I suppose I can suck it up.

The Cohen documentary talks a lot about the different verses and how they changed over time, both by Cohen and then by the folks behind Rufus Wainwright's version.

I keep of list of my funeral songs:

Go In Peace: Sam Baker
Summer's End:  John Prine
Dreaming:  Bruce and Kelly (also about summer ending)
Heading for the Light:  Traveling Wilburys

Did Rufus sing different lyrics?  If so, were they written by Cohen?  To the best of my knowledge, there's only about a half dozen verses that have actually seen the light of day, even though Cohen claims to have written dozens.

Oh, and I hate Rufus' version, mostly because he sings "you" instead of "ya" every time.  Come on, man.

I should have sold you my Twisted Tele pickup set.  Neck pickup is very stratty.  But I already had a strat.  So I swapped them out for a pair of 51 nocaster pickups and have been much happier.  Love both pickups on all my teles.

All of the verses were by Cohen. He changed some of the lyrics between the 84 and the 88 versions that he released.  Jeff Buckley used 2 verses from the 84 version and 3 from the 88 version in his 94 version.   I'll have to go back and listen to the John Cale version from the "I'm Your Fan" compilation (91).

I also HATE Buckley's version.  He lucked out by them letting him put his version on the soundtrack, even though they used a shortened version of Cale's in the movie.

I don’t hate any of the versions but John Cale’s version is my favorite amongst them. It may be an emotional imprinting thought as Julian schnabel used it masterfully at the end of the movie Basquiat and it just burrowed in there. I feel like Rufus (is a titty man) Wainright’s version primarily got a lot of life because it was on the Shrek soundtrack.

buckley’s version is an arrangement I don’t care for but his vox on it are unmatched.

Just listened.  Buckley just covered Cale's version as far as the verses.

my memory absolutely retconned the buckley version under this scene, although they used that version in the previous season finale

Ok, check this out….

See the gold sparkle DW kit the drummer is playing in this video?

So our drummer bought that actual kit from Stevie Nick’s drummer off reverb a while back. Here it is in our studio on Sunday

Please forgive the first take fuckups….

I did not know a drum kit could sound that good. Not that you can tell from this iPhone video. But damn.

Off camera. Playing a deluxe Fodera through an Aguilar.

I saw a dad-populated classic rock cover band in Utah maybe 10 years ago that did a pretty damn good Led Zeppelin impersonation.  The thing that killed it for me, though, was the lead singer.  He sang great, but he wanted to be Robert Plant so bad that he insisted on dressing and gyrating like an in-his-youthful-prime Robert Plant, and I'm sorry, dad bod's don't work in this:

While we’re on the subject of our drummer, here’s a video of him doing an in store with Zack Wylde at House of Guitars in Rochester way back in the day.

My favorite part is the comments about why does the camera keep focusing on the random drummer? Because it was his girlfriend filming lol

Didn't you post this before? Either way, badass. Pride and Glory era Zakk is my fav.

Damn but a Les Paul through a Marshall doesn't sound glorious.  Those first 3 "soundcheck" chords . . . holy moly.

that's good to hear...i have the same shell set in a pewter sparkle on order right now as has been nauseatingly brooded over by me in the drums porn thread.

Shit. I didn’t even think about the drum pron thread. Sorry about that. But that kit is serious business.

Damn @tbone_  Nailed that Wachtel tone.....and my arm gets tired just listening to those 16th notes.  I had Waddy interviewed about that and he said he had to get into shape before going on tour with her because of that song.  Great job and the harmony voices to everyone!  Good stuff.

About to say, that looks like a lot of white hair, excluding the vocalist.   Envious, of course.

That's funny you bring up Waddy, I always thought that song was such a departure from his usual tone.

I used to love Waddy, but the whole child porn thing kinda soured me.
