Oh, she was totally ready to spend that.  (She was a direct descendant of Ed Bluestein, I don't think money was ever an issue for her, although she did work for a living.)

She sounds like a woman made for me.

That is a hell of a deal if the guitar is in good shape.  Almost too good to be true.

What are they normal?

learn me about a D-28. This seem like a heck of a deal from what I’ve seen. Are these cool?

Its considered by many to be the quintessential Martin model, especially in bluegrass circles.  It's probably very resonant, boomy low end (though less than some other Martin models like the HD-28), and loud (which is why bluegrass guys love them).  Ad does not say a year but it looks fairly new.  Modern Martin quality control is pretty good, imo, so less chance its a dud than with some other brands.  Good price too.

Reverb says standard Martin D-28's in very good condition are worth $2012-$2299 and it's based on "recent" sales history.  That is without shipping, and inclusive of Reverb's 5% cut that a seller is paying.  I tend to subtract the 5% if buying outside of Reverb, which would make the range $1911 to $2184.  So I think that guitar, if in a very good condition, is probably priced right at the low end of its worth.  If it were me, I'd go play it and if blows you away, don't leave without it.  If it doesn't blow you away, I'd make a low-ball offer that gives you a built in resale profit margin and if they take it great, if not, return to lusting over Hummingbird's.

I put recent in quotes, because there are usually much fewer sales of high ticket items and the small sample size can make their range iffy.  That said, there have been 7 sold on Reverb in very good condition over the last year and the price ranged from $1995 to $2690.  The cheapest available on Reverb right now is $2199 + $100 shipping.

You can check out their price guide here https://reverb.com/p/martin-d-28#price-guide.

Here's a good rundown of the diifference between the 28 and the HD28. I think some of the details of how they do the "forward shifted bracing" has changed in the past couple of years, although that may only be relevant to HD28s. Short version is that in the late '40s, they made some changes to the D28 that involved using straight braces (rather than scalloped braces) and shifting the X in the bracing back a bit. They also replaced the herringbone purfling with the binding you see on D28's. Sometime in the 1970s, Martin introduced the HD28 as an alternate to the D28 that more closely adhered to the '30s/early'40s specs. I believe that sonically the difference is something like the HD is supposed to be a bit more complex and the D is supposed to be a bit more strong and direct. Both are going to sound like big full Martins and will be great guitars.

I’m not normally one who digs the relic’d stuff, but oooh, damn that’s nice.

What I thought also...

My only issue is there are areas with relic that would never really get worn by actual use. How often is your hand working over the horn?

Well, if they had picked it up when the label was created Monday and not two days later...

Ha.  I had an insurance policy on an SSL console that was about to make a cross-country trip, and I called the insurers just before it left - just to make sure everything was locked in.

No response.

I then fired off an email that definitely had a “tone” and probably dropped some “totally unprofessional” comments.

A couple days later, a woman replied “terribly sorry for how you were inconvenienced” or something like that, and then explained that the office was like ten feet underwater.

Turns out they were in New Jersey and this was a few days after Sandy.

“Dear Reddit:  Am I the asshole…”

Yikes.  I assume the SSL was shipping from elsewhere?  Same console you have at your place now?

over on Reddit, they are talking about a Frusciante signature strat coming out next year, priced around $2,500

If the pants don't fit you must aquit...

Those duds wouldn't be complete without some Mexican pointy boots.

So much nicer than the last version of the 59. The aged finish is even done better. I don't think I'll polish this one.

Obvious answer is obvious.

Really liking this thing. Photos don't really do it justice. So many things right about it.

I own a Martin Custom X Series 12-string (made in Mexico with the HPL back and sides) and it sounds really great, but I've been wanting to upgrade to something all solid wood, and that Guild F-1512 is on my shortlist.

However, I've also recently started thinking about getting an electric 12-string. I don't know anything about the Reverend, but it looks great. I'm also really digging this Danelectro:

I had a 12 string back in the day. Sounded great, always hated tuning it.

@Deejso what’s the deal with that? Nitro? Made in Asia somewhere still? Looks great. I know it doesn’t matter but I do love the open scroll headstock on it so much better than the bigass epiphone thing.

Made in China. Not nitro, but it is a very thin poly made to look aged. Not the usual thick poly gloop Epis tend to be known for. The neck is sublime and has a satin finish that just plays great. I love it. It is gorgeous in person. All Gibson wiring and electronics. Unpotted Custombuckers. Even using Gibson fretwire. CTS pots, Mallory capacitors. 50s wiring.

I need to condition the fretboard because they always show up a bit dry, unlike South Austin's Mom.
