That is a seriously bastardized guitar. Surprisingly, I don’t hate it.

A little less would have been a whole lot more.

I feel like this was an exercise in more is more. Not an attempt at efficient design in any way whatsoever.

Agreed. I think the only other thing they could have done is put one of the pickups on rails.

The original White Falcon was intended as a one off with every bell and whistle they could think of to show off their manufacturing capabilities at NAMM, or maybe some other show. They were shocked when orders started coming in for them. So the whole idea is a more is more guitar.

The answer to "Can I?" without contemplating, "Should I?"

It is kind of fun as a one-off "how over the top would this shit be?!?" kind of project.

Same. I have a 98 am std I wouldn’t trade for anything.

OK, so I have an acoustic guitar duo gig coming up in January.  Haven't done one of those in a long time.  It'll be some originals, but mostly recognizable covers/dance/drinking tunes for a 50th birthday.  Think about an upscale backyard campfire.  That's the scene.

You guys who play out acoustic frequently - what is your current favorite signal chain/effects and why?

I'm putting together a new small acoustic board so curious about this as well.

Only thing for sure is LR Baggs Venue for DI and preamp. Also ordered a Boss DM 101 Delay Machine that is $200 off right now. Also some reverb. Playing with that now. I have a Hall of Fame for basic and also a Strymon Cloudburst that does all kinds of weird shit. Probably go with the HOF.

On the pedal board for our gigs I just go into a boss QE7 eq then into an LR Baggs Venue DI.

For pa we use an EV 30M tower array, which has a mixer on an app that we use with Bluetooth with the ipad. There’s reverb and compression in that app so I use a little of those for the guitar.

Couple of other things for whatever it’s worth - my guitars have the LR Baggs Anthem pickups, which are a combo under saddle and mic in the body, you can blend between the two. IMO is the only acoustic pickup out there that starts to sound realistic and not quacky when plugged in. I spent a fair amount of time on this over the last 4 years and that’s the conclusion I came to.

The other thing we do is run vocals through TC Helicon Duplicator pedals. But we leave the doubling and pitch correction completely off. Just use a little reverb from that pedal (club setting). But the magic in that pedal is in whatever the little tone button is - compression, de esser I think - but it absolutely brings the vocals to life.

We also use a aux out to a QSC 8.2 just to fill up the area better. QSCs are expensive but they sound so much better than all the other powered speakers it’s crazy. If we need to cover a big space I use a QSC 12.2. Sometimes we also use an 8.2 as a floor wedge.

Personally I would stay away from Bose at all costs. But lots of people use them so who knows.

In that setup there is an awful lot of eq going on - the GE7, the Venue, and in the mixer itself, both channel specific and overall. So if you go that way, or any way really, you’ll want spend a bunch of time dialing in before the gig. And then you’ll likely need to tweak a bit to taste for the first few songs.

I’ve found that you need enough bass to sound like too much bass to your ears up close for there to be enough bass for the audience. I’ll get a pic of my settings for you in a bit.

For whatever it’s worth, we pretty much get complimented on our sound every gig. It’s not that hard to make it sound good. And in my experience most people who do acoustic gigs don’t sound great. I don’t know if they just can’t hear it, or don’t want to take the time to make it better, or just don’t care. Our system isn’t complicated at all, anyone should be able to figure it out. I still like to do open mics when I can and every single one of those I’ve been to has sounded horrible.

Just my $.02 based on a couple hundred acoustic gigs.

Acoustic Guitar Forums has a pretty good section on acoustic amplification if you really want to nerd out on this stuff. They are all super high on the Grace Designs Alix preamp. Supposedly it’s the holy grail, but is $800 so I haven’t stepped up to try that out.

One more thing fwiw, I’d be careful with originals in a private party atmosphere, especially if you are being paid. They can be tough on the vibe.

Of course there are always exceptions, like my buddies who wrote a blues tune called Sell the Bitch’s Car. It always kills.

Lots of great help here and upthread.  Thanks for the ideas for tech.

As to the originals, the folks throwing the party are friends of the songwriter and know what he's about.  It's a unique situation where they know what they're getting into with respect to original songs.

Makes sense. I figured that might be the case.

People ask me all the time if we do originals. And I always say, no, like I’m going to write a better song than Gold Dust Woman.

Oh it was an instant classic

Oh and we’re fans of Sennheiser e 835 mics. Same $100 price point as the SM58 but the sennheisers have more life to our ears.

Marshall Plexi and a Les Paul.

Was hoping you would chime in. BTW, I'm looking at a quilter amp head and cab for my pedal steel and learned that QSC is Quilter Sound.

These have been on my reverb watch list for a while.

I did a thing and put stickers on it after more than two years.

That guitar was made for stickers.

looks like jimmyjazz the taste maker has finally begun to make inroads with the plebes at large.

Perhaps the biggest headline is the fact that, for the overall list, the once-dominant PRS SE Silver Sky has slipped two places in the rankings to third position, having comfortably held down the top spot for Reverb’s best-selling lists in 2022 and 2023.

New acquisition.  Heritage Custom Core H535.  Can't play it worth a damn but it sure looks purrty.

Yep.  Made in the original Gibson factory in Kalamazoo.

Man you guys have got to watch this interview with Dan and Mick from That Pedal Show interviewing Noel Gallagher. I had a smile on my face the whole time. He is one funny ass dude with great stories.

Best line came after describing when he first started mixing amps and had like a Marshall G50DFX combined with his WEM Dominator.

He told his crew on stage, ,”Stand back, I’m about to play E Minor!”

I hope that they at least have the common decency to import slave labor to make their guitars.

Does anyone in Austin have a nylon stringed guitar laying around you want to get rid of?  My kid has expressed mild interest in learning to play but I would need to see her actually try before buying her a decent acoustic.

Which head are you looking at? I think the 202 is what I want, over the 101.

202.  Just in case you need that extra push over the edge.

I got a call from Musicians friend today. I haven't ordered anything from them in a couple of years, but I guess they're trying to be like Sweetwater now with the personal stalking bullcorn.

If they want to be like Sweetwater then they should post copious pics of the guitar you're buying and the weight.

I have a question. I’m about to get a new Taylor acoustic/electric.

Question is, would you guys recommend any of the following pin materials over another?

Bone, ebony, brass or plastic? Does it make a difference? Seems like brass might make it brighter which a Taylor doesn’t need anyway.

Just widening if you guys had any experience with any of these or had an opinion.

I'm not sure I've ever had a guitar that didn't have plastic pins.  I can't imagine it makes a difference.  Then again, I play like a feral guinea pig.

My vote would be "not brass"

My vote would be "not brass"

I’d say this too. Though I’ve never given any thought to the pins in my guitars. I assume they are all plastic.

On a related note, just FYI, if you are planning on plugging it in, the expression systems in the Taylor’s aren’t great. And by not great I mean pretty quacky. I don’t know why Taylor doesn’t fix that.

My Breedlove has bone pins. Everything else has plastic. Not sure I could tell the difference in sound.
