Yeah, I'm actually building a shelf system in the closet this weekend to stack my amps here at the house. All the stacks are still at the warehouse though, they aren't going to fly here.

I don’t remember where I got them but I got some amp stands like this since mine are all combos. It’s really nice having all the controls in easy reach.

Completely unrelated to amp stands, but tangentially related to amps…

I've heard Sklar discuss it.  It's incorrect, sort of. He had a fake switch, because producers didn't understand that he could change his tone by repositioning his hands and addressing the strings in a different manner.  They used to ask him to change instruments and/or amps before he installed the fake switches.   The guy's a pro's pro.  Also of note: never a drop of alcohol or a drug.  Not once.

I never get tired of watching this one. That's a band at its peak. They're on fire.

I saw them in 79 on the Nine Lives tour, before Cronin pussified the band.  It was a fantastic show.  I LOVED the way Richrath moved with the guitar.

Cronin never struck me back then as having such a strong yet latent dork gene.  Eventually, though . . .

Digging myself some Gary Richrath tonight.  I'm not quite sure how he gets a Les Paul to quack like a Strat, but good for him, I'll add it to the infinitely long list of "things I can't do on guitar":

I always loved this version from the Midnight Special

I always heard he had his wah half open to get that tone. Either that of the curly que guitar cable.

PSA: Old Midnight Special episodes is a great YouTube rabbit hole to go down.

Great vid. I would have thought Cronin had already turned them into Air Supply by 85.

I just walked by Marcus King and his extremely flamboyant wife in the Miami airport. We were both moving quickly in opposite directions so I didn’t get a pic. /csb

That's one of those celebrity couples that makes one say "it's a good thing Marcus is extremely talented".

Also I'm not sure exactly how quickly Marcus can move.

Fair. I was moving quickly then as my plane was boarding.

Should I be worried that this seller is trying to sell to me direct and bypass Reverb? I understand Reverb’s fee is about 14% so I get it.

I have been so approached in the past and I’ve declined, mostly due to not having buyer protections from Reverb when buying outside their platform.  If you take them up on that, it’s just a private sale between you and someone you haven’t met to buy a guitar that you haven’t played that will be shipped across the country to get to you.  That’s more risk than I am willing to accept.

It's a red flag imo

It’s a local pickup for what that’s worth, and he says it’s been serviced at a shop I’m familiar with. It’s that same Strat listing I posted earlier.

Yeah, if it’s a local pickup and you have the opportunity to play/inspect, that would mitigate the issues I brought up.

The fact that his wife’s maiden name is “Hussey” is absolutely amazing!

Briley Hussey King

My friend who buys and sells on Reverb does this all the time to avoid the Reverb bite. Mainly with local stuff though.

I’m inclined to agree with Goreho on the out of town stuff.

No issues for me with buying direct if local.

Still lame though to advertise on reverb if you plan on cutting them out imo.

Oh, by 1980, he had already started.   My comment was referring to seeing them in 79.

And one of my favorites, with Gary on lead vocals....and the melodic solos are stunning.

Excellence...

That live video of "Golden Country" is hilarious.  Cronin is still in his "can you tell I want to be Robert Plant?" mode.

Tangential note:  we voted that song as our senior song in high school.  One fundamentalist chick protested because it contains a reference to rape.  We were forced to re-vote and ended up with "Come Sail Away" by Styx.  I mean, I don't hate that song, but seriously?  Welcome to conservative rural Missouri.

We voted Burning Down The House in suburban Dallas in 1986. The brass was having nothing of it and we got some bullshit Bryan Adams song I never heard before or since.

Seriously thinking about a used Guild D-55E. I don’t own a dreadnought. I played a few Martin D-28’s and liked them but didn’t love them. Played a Guild (although different model) and was blown away with the sound.

Am I crazy for not just getting the D-28?

Set a budget, buy what you love the most within your budget.  Don't worry about the headstock.

Seriously though, listen to those two guys above me. If the Guild calls you, get the Guild.

Lightning Hopkins and Bonnie Raitt play Guilds off the top of my head. Get that thing!

Jimmy Page played a Guild 12-string on "Over the Hills and Far Away".

For what it's worth, I own a 1999 PRS HBII.  But the hate for that headstock on this thread from others is real.

The Daily Texan "On what subject should you be considered Surly's resident expert?" thread got me thinking about our local guitar/music experts.  On what subject are the posters here experts at?  I'll toss out a few nominations.

@Deej for his Rainman-eque skill at pickguard screw accounting

@AnotherUTFan for his "WWLD" (What Would Lemmy Do) ethos

@noharleyyet for knowledge of "Joe Bonamassa's Greatest Hits"

@Chad Fuck for how to be the worst GAS Anonymous sponsor in the world

I realize I am opening myself up to a counter offensive here...
