Paring down the collection - and yes, I know that's not what the thread is for.  But life has thrown me a few curveballs, and I'm downsizing to my most sentimental instruments in preparation for a move.

Selling this I-35 LC with Fralin P90's.  Cheapest used blond on Reverb is 6K, and cheapest new ones are well over 7K.  Surly discount is $3950 plus shipping.  PM me.

It is not a good time for me to buy something of this magnitude, unfortunately.  You should easily be able to get that amount from someone.  Good luck, @Paul Wesley!

That thing is gorgeous & P90's too...I need to log out til this one sells

Ok I’m not sure what thread it was but Gil Bang brought up the Mike Campbell book that recently came out.

Reading it now on my current sabbatical in Maui and it’s fucking fantastic. My advice is to drop whatever you’re doing and read this book stat. Preferably in Maui if you can. Just awesome.

Going back to this, I'm sure this won't be the last time we hear about lost/stolen guitars appearing in this collection.  There have been some pretty wild finds over the last few years.  Peter Frampton's LP Custom, Paul McCartney's bass, now this.  I have to wonder as the dinosaurs of rock age, the people who have come to possess these guitars - by whatever means - are acknowledging that to get full realization of the value it should be done while the subjects of interest are still alive.  Moreover, while there are people who are still interested in the dinosaurs themselves who are still alive.

He's really a terrific writer, and has an amazing memory. One particular passage really captured his great writing:

Spoiler

When he writes about "Grayboy", his Newfie dog, getting out of the pool and jumping in Dylan's car, sloshing water and slobber everywhere.  Having owned a Newf, I could see it happening in my mind as if it were happening in front of me.

A few years back, somebody found Randy Bachman's long-lost, stolen Gretch.  Some guy in Japan had purchased it several years ago at a Tokyo pawn shop.   Bachman got it back, buy trading the guy another Gretch at the Canadian embassy in Tokyo.

Then I'm obliged to repost the Lucy story:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucy_(George_Harrison_guitar)

And a pic from the "Revolution" video for reference:

interesting, but holy hell that was poorly written.

Yes, that one sentence about Rick Derringer is a wild ride.

The story gets told in the Norman's Rare Guitars doc on Netflix in a much better way.  Norm facilitated the purchase of the guitars traded for Lucy.

I've heard that the QC on Gretch is poor, and you're more likely to get a shitty one than a good one.

YMMV

This one is from 2001, I should have mentioned.

That was a satisfying watch.

It would be great to get that ‘54 Strat into the hands of Eric Johnson to replace his original “Virginia” Strat, but the one in this video is Ash.  Virginia was Sassafras. My guess is EJ and his magic canine hearing would be able to tell the tonal difference.

I’m not a big Gretsch guy, but geez…this guitar would be welcomed with open arms and hands at my house if it showed up as a gift.

I really enjoy this guy’s demo videos.  Keeps them succinct.  Provides a lot of details about the guitar.  Plays all pickup positions.  Gives you a good look at it.  Does a great playing video for each guitar he reviews.

He is just a guy in a small room in Singapore.  He should have way more followers and views than he does considering the quality of his work.

That’s an awesome guitar

I’ve never heard of this Nigel fellow, but I’ve heard of Hillsong.  Good to see they are using high quality instruments to praise the creator of our universe and savior of all mankind. 👊

Not sure this is the right place, but we discussed his illness here, so...

You can't keep a good Stray Cat down. It's been five months since Brian Setzer revealed that he had an autoimmune disease that prevented him from playing guitar. But on July 28, the Stray Cats announced that all three original members (Setzer, Lee Rocker and Slim Jim Phantom) would be heading out on the road for a cross-country tour.

Yeah, wish that Albuquerque gig was Santa Fe, that's only 2.5 hours away.

I saw that they are coming to Phoenix. First thing I thought was what about his hand.

Buying tickets anyway.

You bought your grandkid a (very) short scale bass?

future mariachi?

BTW, went to a work friend's mom's 100th Birthday party on Saturday.  They're mexican, and the Mariachi band did not disappoint.

Anybody have a guesstimate of how much it would cost to install pearl blocks on a maple fretboard?  I’m in Austin and would also appreciate recommendations for someone to do the work.

Edited by destroya

Might be cheaper to buy a new neck, no?

As for pearl on maple, you'd barely see them.

I would also imagine that the work required to route and install blocks or remove and replace blocks on a neck would be more expensive than just getting the neck you’re looking for, but I haven’t done the research

I've been told that simply refretting a full maple neck often isn't worth it -- just buy a new one and keep the old one for resale if you part with the guitar.  Don't know if that's true or not, but if it is, I would think new dots would be an even worse idea.

Thanks for the feedback. I’m a big believer that some pieces of wood come together better than others, and this bass is one of those. So I’m not super concerned about cost, but I will happily keep it as is, instead of buying a new neck, if this turns out to be some quixotic project.

I would contact MJT to talk about what you want to do.  They can get a custom built neck to your exact specs or work on an existing neck that you provide.  If the latter, you would need to remove the neck, ship it, they do their thing, ship it back and you reassemble.  I‘m assuming we are talking about bolt on.

I would not discount the idea of a new neck.  It’s good advice, and MJT can get you a very exact copy of your existing neck, giving you the option of keeping it as is with no risk.  Talking to MJT will probably give you an idea of how Quixotic your quest might be.

Thats a lotnof pick guard screws!

Congrats.

I can correct that.

Outstanding. How does the bigbsy do with staying in tune?

I'll find out. I've never had a problem with Bigsbys on other guitars. They don't move like the bar on a strat.

Tuning stability is fine. Not enough wiggle to put it out of tune.

I’ve started doing this and I think it might be the equivalent of an old man hiking his pants up to his nipples
