“I still have it (referring to the Dragon Tele), but it’s a tragic story. I went on tour with the ’59 Les Paul that I bought from Joe Walsh, and when I got back, a friend of mine had kindly painted over my paint job. He said, I've got a present for you.’ He thought he had done me a real favor. As you can guess, I wasn’t real happy about that. His paint job totally screwed up the sound and the wiring, so only the neck pickup worked. I salvaged the neck and put it on my brown Tele string bender that I used in the Firm. As for the body… it will never be seen again! (laughs)”

Hell, let Fender Custom Shop refinish the body to his original dragon spec.

So they perfected a telecaster that is guaranteed to play sloppy on stage.

I'm starting a five piece band. It's all guitarists and everyone plays a Dragon tele. Who's in?

Not unless Vagidragons count.

Let's find that dude and kick his ass.

Couldn't have been a guitar tech because he would have realized he fucked up the electronics. Whoever it was, I'm assuming Peter Grant got wind of it and the dude just "disappeared."

Some theories have it that it was actually on loan from Jeff Beck, and Page being Page, just claimed it was ruined, and has had it intact the entire time.

Could be. How could Fender make such a perfect repro without the original example, maybe?

The witches at Fender have made several masterbuilts repros of guitars that no longer exist. That's the secret to the whole operation.

(Those dudes go ape shit with the research.  They contact owners, previous owners, people who owed the previous owners money, everyone. It's quite an ordeal. I hope one day they keep a lot of that research and compile a book.  Would put that Guitar Aficionados tome to shame. )

Raises hand.

Gold.

But if it makes me play his kinda sloppy, I’m all in.

Agreed. Page is awesome. Hes sloppy, but like porn star sloppy. It works. It also gives a wannabe guitar owner some hope that maybe his own slop isn't as bad as it really is.

Although I'm a bit more of a Richie Blackmore admirer...at least as far as playing.

I'd want Jimmy to sign my Tele but also cast some kind of benign spell on it. And there needs to be a certificate of magick, and it better be spelled with a fucking "k."

NG'TopGD....sounds great......I need to get better...much better

Guess I'm warming to the relic concept

That setup is badass. Dirt, Delay, Verb. (Waza brother). Strat and an LP. Is that Strat coral? Faded fiesta red? What's going on there?

That's gotta be coral.

Love the Victorian music room.

Can't see nothing and I want to see something.

Collings

Congrats Harley. I've never played a Collings, but that looks like a fine guitar right right there.

Thanks Foggy, just sold the LP and didn't know much about them til a kid at the music store let me try his Deluxe SoCo. They are fine machines...I'd like to visit their operation someday.

I'll be taking my Casino in for a setup soon.  Over the two years I've had it, I've only bonded with it through a cranked bassman.  Pretty much anything sounds good through a cranked bassman.  I'm hoping the setup gets me excited about it.  I really want to like it.

You will....

That's my hope.  I replaced the bridge with a tunomatic and put some felt under the pick guard to get the vibrations gone.  It's a cool guitar, and it's a goldtop.

Got a pic of the case without a guitar in it?

20181104-153104.jpg

I finally figured out the mystery Gibson case. It's for an early 80s 335-S, which was a solid body shaped like a 335, but a little smaller. I'd never heard of this guitar before. Here's a link to one that I found online that has a buncha pics including one of the empty case which is exactly like mine: https://www.chicagomusicexchange.com/listing/gibson-335-s-professional-deluxe-sunburst-1980-s544/11012854

That's a very unfortunate looking guitar.
That was my immediate thought.

if you took that guitar and loosened every screw on it about a quarter turn, and you were Jack White, it would probably sound pretty badass

I actually think it’s kinda cool and funky looking. It’s the positions of the switch and jack that are unfortunate to me. WTF were they thinking?

Ah, NM. I see the jack is on the bottom of the bout. My bad.

...said every guitar player since 1961 about Gibson's new line up,

Pretty sure that sunburst double cut only works with a curly cord plugged in.

Have any of you guys ever done solo acoustic gigs?

Can't really sing that well, so no.  I've done duos and trios often enough though.

A few.  The nice thing is you don't have to worry about your bandmates fucking up.  The bad thing is you have nobody else to blame.

(What I've done amounts to little more than an open mic, although I did a couple of duo sets with a friend who is a great singer and she & I actually went over well in front of packed clubs we had no business playing at.  So, sometimes it can work but it's nervewracking for sure.)

I’ve kind of been working at it under the heading of “crazy ass goals to work on that may never come to fruition but if they do it would be kind of cool”. The idea of making a few bucks here and there sitting in the corner of a bar playing tunes I like sounds appealing as a pseudo retirement plan. Plus, I live in Phoenix so you don’t have to be all that good to get gigs, not at all like Austin. Crowds here are generally just happy to have someone play. I’ve seen some dudes getting paid here who really aren’t that good.

That said it would be nice not to suck. I actually took some voice lessons this summer when I had some free time from a really good voice coach. Amazing the difference it made and easily the most awkward thing I’ve ever done, nothing else is even close. Big help in getting over the anxiety.

JJ I’m much less worried about band mates fucking up than I am band mates who don’t or can’t make the required commitment. We all have pretty full schedules these days. I can control 100% of the commitment required in a solo bit. Plus the song list isn’t a democracy.

Who knows, we’ll see I guess.

Speaking of short-lived guitars from the 80s, yall ever seen one of these? 1988 Epiphone Spotlight

That looks like a PRS prototype.  Hence, ugly.

I've never been a PRS guy myself NTTAWWT.

There's not much official info on these, but the story is that Gibson was planning to put out a line of guitars called the Nouveau in 87. They were to be milled in Japan then sent to the US for assembly and finishing so they could put Made in the USA on the headstock. Those plans got scrapped, and instead Gibson decided to mill them in Korea and release them as Epiphones. Some people think they were assembled in the US, but others believe they were totally made in Korea. They were made for less than a year and then production stopped. There's some speculation that PRS had threatened to sue.

Most of these were made with Steinberger tremolos and locking nuts, which was a poor design that broke easily. Gibson had just recently bought Steinberger, so the trem units were probably leftover parts Gibson wanted to use. Some believe the three-piece mahogany neck thru bodies on these were also leftover Steinberger parts. This one came with a Strat style bridge that they switched to shortly before ending production. The fretboard is ebonol, which is a synthetic material kinda like what bowling balls are made of.

Here's a shot of the back and the headstock. I can post more pics if there are any other parts yall want to see.

Nah.  Ugly.  REALLY ugly.
