Electric strings: agnostic, new is always better than old, 10s. Usually buy the green slinky’s in bulk from Amazon.

Acoustic - Martin SP, 12s.

String roundup.  What are y'all rocking?   I'm hooked right now on a combo of light on the steels and Gibson VR pure nickel mediums on the wrapped, going 10-13-17-30-42-50.  I have to break up 2 packs to make it, so I just need to make friends with someone who favors 11-14-18-26-36-46 and we can split the cost.

John Pearce phosphor bronze on acoustic, medium gauge (13-17-26-35-45-56), Ernie Ball Power Slinky on electric (11-48)

I've been playing those Pearce strings for 20 years and swear by them

D'Addario .10's on almost everything, except I use .11's with a wound G string on my big Gretsch because the added heft holds the floating bridge tighter to the body.

On the acoustics I use either Pierce or Martin SP .13's.

Like JJ, I dont have a sweat issue and strings last me forever. I have guitars I play regularly that haven't had new strings in over a year. I dont know how, but that changed. I remember my string turning all dark and gunky after a few months and always having to replace them. I dont know if it was moving to San Francisco, building bigger callouses, or what, but as of 6 or 7 years ago I noticed that my strings always look bright and shiny regardless of how much i play. I can rehearse for 3+ hours with sweat running down my right arm and soaking the top. Put the guitar away, forget to even wipe it down, come back next time and the strings still look new. It's a nice problem to have.

A good friend and former bass player sweats if you open the freezer.  His bass was disgusting.  The pickups and bridge were covered in salt and the strings were all kinds of fucked up a few days after changing them out.

#4608

My strings stay pretty clean. I do prefer the sound on strings with a little age to them, particularly on the Teles. I think it dials a bit of the snappiness of the bridge pup back.

#4609

My strings also stay super clean.   I always change them before playing in front of people, but otherwise don't change them much.

NGD!  The pics don't do it justice IMO.  Looks gorgeous and I love the feel of the ebony fretboard.  Something was wrong with the high E string, which kept popping out of tune and then broke pretty fast, but it sounds fantastic, even better than I remembered during the guitar center test run.

That looks great, Mojo!

That silverburst paint job really pops. It looks a lot brighter and more vibrant than the stock pic from Adorama you had posted earlier. And $999 for that guitar, or any new American Professional model, is a steal.

#4622

Thanks!  Yeah it is really vibrant IRL.   I like the pickups, which sound like a mix of tele and strat, especially on the middle and neck settings, but I still think I'm going to try some P90s to get a totally different sound in my arsenal.

Only question is - stick with white or get black ones?

#4623

The white gives it a vintage vibe IMO.

Had I not already bought that Strat there’d be two of those in this thread. That’s a beauty.

Stick with the white. Lollar makes a Jazzmaster P90 that drops in with no modifications.

What are those if they aren’t p90s?

They are a variation fender single coil made for jazzmasters, in soap bar covers like p90s.  Whereas p90s have two bar magnets with passive steel poles under the strings, each of the poles in JM pickups is an individual magnet like a strat pickup.

Well, shit.  Do I need white, cream, or parchment?

What color are the ones on there now? White?

I would probably want them to match the knobs, which, according to the specs on Adorama, are white.

You're right, it does say that.   Weird, though, because compared to my strat, which is definitely white, the JM looks cream.   And I don't know what parchment is.

Yeah those don't look white.

Parchment is a kinda aged white, but it's not as yellow as cream. Fender uses a witch hat style knob on their American Vintage Jazzmasters that is listed as white but definitely looks more like parchment so those could be parchment plastic parts?

#4631

I said this earlier, but I would prefer chrome on the pickups and knobs.  Get some chrome knurled Tele knobs and take it another direction.

We are practicing straight into a PA and all my guitars sound shitty. Just one bass, one guitar and vocals. Without dragging an amp over and mic-ing it, are there any tips. Pedals help a little but just sounds hollow and tinny.

#4633

I think that's the ideal environment for a modelling pedal/amp.  In general they give me hives, but sometimes they're the best tool for the job.

My new tele is just sitting in my office waiting for me. Cant

wait till Monday

I think I would find a reason to go in to work on Sunday. That reason would be a new Tele.

As as I go bragging about not having to change strings often I break one. A fucking D string. How the hell do you break a D string? These had probably been on here a year.

I mentioned this once some time ago, but the Tonebridge app is pretty fun to play around with. You use it with an iPhone or iPad and some sort of interface, and you can dial up all sorts of songs and their sounds. A lot of it is real crap but there is a huge library to sift through and you really only need a couple of good ones.

I have the first version of this for the interface:

Alternately I have a POD HD that I never use. Make me an offer:

I never had the patience to get a good sound out of it.

ditto what's been said about a modeling substitution-- if not that, maybe an EQ pedal?

At the risk of alienating everyone with products built by my friend Alan, this is another terrific solution, but it's not cheap.  Check out the videos, especially Redd Volkaert.

How good of a friend?  Discount friend?

And nothing to be worried about promoting Durham pedals.  They're top notch.

I never asked for a friends and family discount.  It's such a small shop, I figure he's priced them how he needs to.

#4649

Today at practice I was able to dial in the compressor to where it really helped. I'm going to put the Screamer back on and that should help. Also going to pick up a small most pedal..... probably an EP.

As a small business owner and freelance illustrator/designer I’ll go ahead and thank you for him.
