Riley is a head coach who might have won the national championship in 2017 if he'd had an even average defense to combine with his explosive offense led by a Heisman QB.

So for 2018 he rolled out an explosive offense led by a Heisman QB and an even worse defense than the previous year.

They're not offensive coordinators anymore. Judge them accordingly.

I judge Orlando on our defensive coaching and Herman on our offensive coaching. Don't see why the same paradigm shouldn't be applied to blOU. Also keep in mind that Riley inherited Mike Stoops, Grinch is the first defensive coordinator he's actually hired.

Plus OU sucks.

Yes, these visits kinda happen spontaneously. Hey, so and so is visiting Texas this weekend, and by the end of Friday 15 more recruits are in town.

no, but there are a ton of people out there who do, and i wasn't sure if they were all affiliated.  i figured most of the cooler looking ones were not in house.  good for us.

Yeah, Kelee has now visited us 3 times on his own dime and spent his entire spring break here watching practices and getting to know the coaches.  Sounds like he knows where he wants to go and wants to see what it would be like to be a student athlete here.  You have to like our chances here big time.  Win 10 games and we kick up one of the best corner prospects in the last decade.  He’s on the same level as Derek Stingly, Jamal Adams, Caden Sterns, etc.  It’s nice to finally have elite guys want to come here again.  It was just a few years ago Najee Harris said “ Texas who”.  Really impressed with the direction Herman has this program going.  We win 10+ this year, we’re going to have the #1 class in 2021 considering how many elite players are interested in us.

the lsu game is everything.  it's at home, it'll be a top 10 matchup, the city and stadium will be electric.  we win that game, and nothing else really matters.

vegas has us at 9.5 o/u for wins, which basically assumes a loss to lsu and ou.  not sure what the 3rd hardest game on our schedule is, either @wva or @tcu maybe?

beat lsu, and we're staring down 11-1 or 10-2 (at worst) and another trip to the b12 cg and another big bowl.  we all saw what the georgia win did for perception of our program and how we're "coming back" and "heading in the right direction".  we beat lsu, and we're officially "back" in the eyes of recruits and fanbase.  ink another top 5 class in 2020, and we'll be a freight train.

This Ringo spring break trip is better than any scripted visit or pitch.  A heavy hitter like that, embracing everything about the program, hanging out, watching practice, goofing off with the coaches.

I'm expecting a Justin Wells update about how Ringo had to be escorted from the registrars office attempting to enroll in Summer I classes dressed in full Texas home uniform, helmet and pads.

So you don't consider the head coach responsible for over half of his team's performance (using your logic the special teams coordinator is the only one judged on special teams performance). Pretty interesting theory you've got going there.

He is right about inheriting Stoops at least. If Herman inherited a DC as terrible as Stoops we would have cut him slack until his hire took over. If/when their D sucks next year, then we can fully blame Riley for it. But right now he's been working with his predecessors players and coordinator.

Yes, he's a great head coach and the evidence is that he's completely not responsible for over half of his team. I yield, the logic is unassailable.

This may be one of the dumbest things you’ve ever posted on here. Riley and Herman are ahead coaches. They’re responsible for every single aspect of the program. Leadership in organizations matter. Only judging them by the performance of the offense is just beyond stupid. Not to mention, Riley prioritizes offends and runs his practices in a way that harms the defense, so he absolutely should get responsibility for their shitty performances.

Lol. Stoops has sucked for ages now and Riley was dumb enough to bring him back. It’s no different than Charlie bringing back watson for year 2, and we rightly killed Charlie for that. Just another aspect of the organization that Riley has done a poor job with, unless of course you only judge him by the offense’s performance.

The affiliated ones put out by the in house graphics team will always have the recruiting hashtag (#cloUT2020) and the "Hook 'Em! Tom Herman" signature along the bottom, usually in the lower right hand corner

The optics of firing Bob's brother immediately after taking the job that Bob gave him wouldn't have been very good. I'm just saying it's too early to say RIley definitely is or isn't bad at taking care of his defense.

Please. Both Herman and Riley are offensively-minded HCs. The defense we run is Orlando's defense, if it does poorly Herman's recourse is to warn him, fire him, or delegate his responsibilities elsewhere. Likewise, the defense blOU runs next year will be Grinch's defense. His coverage schemes, his blitz packages, etc. etc.

Herman hasn't had to do that with defense since his decision to hire Orlando was a good one. Riley has had to do that, because he inherited a crappy one. There's a vast difference between the level of control Herman exerts over the offense and that of the defense. But if you don't believe so, please tell me more about Herman or Riley's defensive coaching/philosophy.

E.J. Holland: Friday practice draws group of elite recruits

Texas hosted a monster group of visitors for today’s practice. Perhaps the biggest of them all was five-star cornerback Kelee Ringo, who has been on campus since Monday. The Saguaro (AZ) prospect has now visited Texas three times, and the fact that he chose to spend his entire Spring Break in Austin speaks volumes. Ringo has had an opportunity to hang out with the players, get to know the staff, including head coach Tom Herman, on a personal basis and really get an in-depth look at the campus, facilities and city. Texas has seen a couple of Crystal Ball picks come its way for Ringo over the last 48 hours, and the Longhorns are surging in this recruitment. Remember, Texas is the only school that has hosted Ringo on multiple occasions.

Aside from Ringo, Texas is playing host to two major targets in Duncanville duo Ja’Quinden Jackson and Chris Thompson. This is huge news considering Jackson and Thompson have not been on campus all offseason. Texas should be considered the frontrunner for both at this time. Jackson and Thompson have been spending a ton of time with assistant Ra’shaad Samples and love the coaches and program overall.

Of course, the “bash bros,” also known as elite 2021 offensive linemen Tommy Brockermeyer and James Brockermeyer, are in Austin. Tommy has the potential to be the top player in the state next cycle, and James is racking up offers left and right. Both are Texas legacies and if the Longhorns extend a scholarship to James, they should be able to lock them up fairly early.

Sticking in the 2021 class, Kendrick Blackshire, the nation's top inside linebacker for his class, also watched the Longhorns in action. Blackshire is open early on, and UT is squarely in the mix. Ringo wasn’t the only key cornerback target on campus today. John Tyler’s Kitan Crawford also made his way in to watch the Longhorns practice.

Texas offered Crawford earlier this offseason and hosted him for junior day last month. Getting him back for a return visit so soon makes us feel better about our Crystal Ball predictions. From everything we have been able to gather, the Crawford visit went extremely well. We wouldn’t be surprised if he makes an early decision, and Texas appears to be the clear team to beat. Texas offensive line commits Jake Majors and Jaylen Garth were on hand as well to help the Longhorns recruit.

Jesus dude. It’s not all about bout scheme. Herman and Riley are the leaders of their organizations.

They run very aspect and set the leadership for the whole organization. That absolutely affects the defense. And again, Riley runs his practices for the offense. He actively harms his defense with the tempo and style of his practices.

Good to know that EJ thinks we are surging in the recruitment of Ringo.

More than half. He doesn’t judge Riley by special teams either because they’re not his schemes. He only draws up plays for the offense.

Can you explain how Riley runs his practices for his offense? I hadn't heard that before so genuinely curious

He, like a lot of other air raid coaches, Luna high tempo, high reps, which is great for installing your offense, but creates a ton of bad habits on defense.

Theres a reason a ton of these air raid guys have struggled to ever field a good D. It’s not just in-game tempo. It’s about practice style and talent disbursement. Watch to see how many athletes like Sanders and these other guys he recruits end up on offense vs. defense. Also, with his 2018 DL class absolutely falling apart combined with his 2019 defensive class, he’s absolutely failed to bring in elite talent on D during his time as HC. That roster has a massive talent disparity between offense and defense.

But I guess none of that is Riley’s fault and it was all on Stoops according to satya.
