That makes me think, what's the average shh-to-commitment time? Any data scientists here?

Wrong. Everybody knows we just time the commitment videos to thwart aggy momentum.

Machinator can we get a spreadsheet with all 2020 and 2021 moms birthdays and then cross reference that with every Carrington ssshhhh?

This is an interesting point. How many teams believe they have the structural advantages that they should expect to be Top 5 every year?

I would think USC fits the list.  Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, and Clemson certainly would make that case. That leaves programs like LSU, FSU, Florida, Michigan, and Penn State off the list. Each of those programs can make a very similar argument as to why they should be Top 5 every year as Texas.

Texas has talent in its backyard, is the flagship school in its state, runs an offense suited to the talent it recruits in state, has a bottomless pit of donor financial support, a history of championships, and is on every single list of blue blood college football programs. The fact that Texas is a public Ivy only adds to this.

The list of schools that has ALL of those things built in is significantly smaller than the list you provided. CTJ is absolutely right in saying that the FLOOR should be top 5. I would say that USC is the only school that has anywhere close to the inherent recruiting advantages that Texas has.

Texas and usc are also in 2 of the 3 states that have more than 2 P5 schools to share that talent and recruit against. Louisiana only has the one.

LSU has the easiest run in to the top 5. That state is loaded with talent, it's the only P5 there, and it has a uniquely enormous cultural pressure to attend for both locals and the huge Louisiana diaspora. The fact it's not a Public Ivy actually helps (think about our alumni base's discomfort with muddy recruiting vs. LSU just openly recruiting our players to "walk on").

Makes sense if it was a level playing field.  Bama, LSU and Georgia are all willing to play the game a different way.

I remember when several LSU players from Texas cited “academic support” as a reason for picking LSU.

Translation: Easy classes / study load.

Texas, USC, Georgia, and LSU all have the easiest path to a top 5 class.

Miami?

My view is that Texas and USC have no excuses for not having top 5 classes every year barring the already discussed exceptions. Outside of that, the only school with even a vague claim around all of the same advantages is Miami, but they don’t have history or program support in the same manner as Texas and USC.

Academics, talent in surrounding areas, program tradition, P5, weather, resources, facilities, major population center people aspire to, media coverage, and showtime fame elements. Who has that besides those 2 or maybe 3? No one. All things equal, they should be top 5.

Sounds like a nice topic for a different thread on the football board if there aren't already ten of them.

Well it is recruiting, so it'd probably go in Non-Texas 2020 if we really felt like thread policing.

Extremely hard to be Top 5 every year.  In years with a smaller class of 20-23 players, Texas ending up between #6 and #10 with great player evaluations is acceptable.

Bama was #7 in 2018.

RobocopGb110311.jpg

I was referring to the tiresome blue blood stuff. We're Texas. That's enough for me.

All this talk is nice and good and all, but I never understand why there’s so much blow back to people upset about Texas missing on top players because it decreases the odds of us winning a championship. No one has said we can’t win a title if we get a #10 class, only that it makes it more difficult, and yet every year in the offseason, people come flocking on to the board to mention a single 3 star that turned out better than a 5 star or extreme outliers like Oregon from like 10 years ago and Clemson in the first title as an example of why it’s doable.

OU has the best offensive mind in all of football and two Heisman QBs and yet they couldn’t even make the title game. Somehow people view this as eveidencr you don’t have to have top 5 classes when it seems really fucking obvious to me that it should be an indictment on their recruiting that proves the rule because if they had top 5 talent on defense, they’d almost definitely have won a title.

Regardless it seems like almost everyone generally agrees you can win a title with top 10 classes, but it makes it more difficult, so it’s really people arguing about the difference in degrees of difficulty based on missing one or two recruits. Seems pretty fucking stupid, yet we have the argument ad nauseum and I find myself getting sucked into even while thinking what a stupid conversation it is while typing.

Yet this happens all the time to us on Surly. I guess it’s just the Surlholm syndrome at work.

TFB's updated "shh" timeline from this calendar year. Of note, it seems that the "double silent" from early June was not, in fact, a double silent.

It could be, but it seems like Chris Thompson's shh might come closer to August 1st - his tentative announcement date.

Clemson also has really, really low attrition rates. If our program attrition rate drops to their level, then the Clemson comparisons will be warranted. Until then though, they remain an exception.

With the way they've won recently plus not having do play school to get your degree, they should keep it low moving forward. They can get any prospect and their family accepted. They can cherry pick the southeast, don't have to buy a player but will when needed, HC will baptize you in the building and will act like his ethics are unparalleled. They'll shrink your balls but you'll be developed. You can sleepwalk through your schedule until it's playoff time.

I'll give Dabo credit, it's also just a legit family atmosphere. That team and their coaches seem to really like each other.

That post is off for some reason. They show up at 5 on 247 right now for their 2018 class.

Ale Kaho signed with Washington in Feb 2018 and then transferred to Bama in Aug 2018.  247 redid the class rankings to reflect Kaho moving schools and that bumped Bama up to #5 from #7

Some bits from TFloss:

Inside Texas mentioned they wouldn't be surprised if S Jerrin Thompson of Lufkin was on campus next weekend.

Coach Hand started following OL Tobias Braun of Salisbury, CT.

He's from Germany, played in Bullard, TX for his junior year and recently transferred up north.

Hand just wants an excuse to go antiquing up in the Berkshires since his class is one piece away from being done.

He's only the 8th-rated recruit from the state of Germany.  Hard pass.
