So there's like 10 of us? Well I'll be damned. Here I thought finding a cesspool of a forum for Texas football and then following it to its successor would leave me with few ethnically Indian folk. Turns out I was very wrong. I guess that explains the proliferation of Bollywood gifs.

That's a shockingly rational update.

The fact that academics follows "depth charts,"  "defensive schemes" and "personnel groupings," on the list of what's important to Xavion is hilarious though. And a VERY aggy thing to write.

DB RECRUITING
It seems like we just did this for the Scoop...well, we have to do it again.

Earlier this week Texas landed Ethan Pouncey at cornerback. The four-star surprised everyone by making the call this early. Initially he was going to take all of his official visits with UT being last. According to him his best relationships besides Texas were with Florida, Auburn, and Alabama. After Texas missed on Jahari Rogers they amped up pursuit of Pouncey, a player the coaches always felt they could get. That confidence bore out.

We were thinking they'd be done at corner barring a super blue-chip but that isn't the case. The number at corner is definitely three. It's very possible they didn't take a corner in the 2019 class -- Kenyatta Watson may grow into a nickel (though he's impressing at corner now) and Marques Caldwell may be a safety long-term. This is a solid reminder numbers within classes are always in flux.

While trying to manage corner numbers, the staff is also trying to figure out safety.

Rewind to the 2018 class. When that class began a certain sage predicted Jason Washington and Craig Naivar would end up looking like excellent recruiters. We were still getting to know the new coaches and were confident they would be good recruiters, but they were aided by a sensational in-state crop much like Oscar Giles and Herb Hand are in this cycle as well as the next.

To be sure, Naivar and Washington are excellent recruiters which makes it more than a coincidence each are missing on early targets in the same cycle after scoring big in 2018 and 2019 to a lesser extent. That depth chart really is doing them no favors.

When you have ultra-competitive recruiters like them they tend to get antsy and want to land guys in a hurry. That has the staff, at least from our vantage, entertaining some interesting scenarios.

Already in the fold are Kitan Crawford and Ethan Pouncey, leaving one spot open at corner. The number is also three at safety, counting the need at nickel.

Texas looks good for Lufkin's Jerrin Thompson. The four-star fits nickel quite well and that need could be filled as early as this weekend. Okay, looking good at nickel, a hard position to fill.

They're still going to work on Chris Thompson and Bryson Washington. Both are going to be very difficult to flip, and they know that, which has them pushing for Xavion Alford. We're on about our third iteration of a UT/A&M battle for Alford after he flirted heavily with LSU and then Alabama.

Alford of course is good friends with corner Joshua Eaton. Eaton has tons of athletic upside but is very raw. They would take both with Alford at field safety and Eaton as CB3. Where it gets tricky is, to land Alford they may have to push for Eaton ASAP. Right now A&M is the smart money for Xavion while the Aggies, like UT, is looking at other corner options in addition to Eaton. Recall the David Gbenda recruitment (which is going to reward UT big time) and we said the first school to push hard for him would land him. Same situation with Eaton.

There's also the slight possibility Jerrin Thompson could end up at field safety with Kitan Crawford at nickel should corners be easier to find than safeties. That's only ideal if they find an all-world corner, the type that's very likely to end up at Georgia. That isn't Eaton.

Not that it matters, but what we think they should do is just hold what they got. If Alford and Eaton want in, I guess you happily accept, but if the season is as good as they expect opportunities will arise that are unforeseeable right now. At a minimum, a player or two will make big leaps in their play and become bigger profile recruits. Plus you can still work on Jahari Rogers and Lathan Ransom. Their normal patient approach is exactly what they should be embracing right now, in our opinion.

Rogers is interesting in that Florida feels pretty confident they'll hold on while Texas feels like there's a solid chance for the flip. Similarly, Texas doesn't feel like the full Lathan Ransom story has been written yet. If he visits for the LSU game then that recruitment starts all over again.

Given Chris Thompson's fit in the defense they're not likely to find a like-for-like so they'll just stay on him.

NEXT COMMITS?

If Jerrin Thompson jumps in, that would give Texas 14 commits. Who could #15 be? The odds on favorite for that would be West Mesquite's Ty Jordan.

Jordan would bring everything you look for in a RB2, namely versatility and gamebreaking ability. He's a pinball 'back with borderline elite speed and really good hands.

We never want to take recruits for granted, especially in this cycle, but assuming those two commit that would leave only 6-8 spots left.

Another player who will announce before the season is Temple wide receiver Quentin Johnston. We wish we had a better feel for this one, but we're confident it's down to UT and TCU. After talking to people on both sides, the best we can figure is it's a coin flip. With two highly rated quarterbacks, four capable offensive lineman, and a five-star running back it should be easy to sell Johnston on joining the class. But TCU can simply tell him he gets all of Jalen Reagor's targets after he leaves school in a few months.

KELVIN JOSEPH

The former high four-star LSU defensive back who was in the portal, then out of the portal, then back in the portal officially visited Florida a couple of weeks ago. Word around the campfire in Gainesville is that Joseph may visit Texas. I'm not sure of the exact particulars -- when it would occur -- but it is possible pending his grades. Florida appears the most likely destination but if it emerges that he intends to visit we didn't want the board caught off guard.

Man, Rivals is bad.

Here’s Pouncey’s ratings across the 3 sites: #90 Nationally, #7 CB, (247), #103 Nationally, #11 CB (ESPN), 3-Star, #38 CB (Rivals)

when/if Rivals gets their head out of their ass and decides to watch him play. Hell, even just turn on his hudl, he could easily move into the top 100 composite with a grade around 96.

It’ll definitely be interesting to see what the staff does at DB. I think I’d rather hold steady at 3 and try to sign 2 of Ringo, Rogers, Ransom, Thompson, or Washington and/or go after a late rising DB.

Alford’s good not great and I’m doubtful he can bulk up to Nickel, so then you have a deep safety with decent but not great athleticism. I wouldn’t trust him to be a single high all that often,  but he also doesn’t have the speed/strength of a guy like Jones (or Owens in the future) to erase stuff in the run game. Eaton obviously has a high ceiling, but right now, that floor is really low. If we close up shop with Eaton and Alford, it’s still a good DB class, but not as high end as previous years, or hopefully future years. Stealing DBs from aggy, especially a true CB, would be fun. Then again, I have 0 faith in Linguist being able to coach up Eaton. lulz.

If we take 3 corners and 3 safeties, plus WRs ... does that even leave room for any LBs?  Is Orlando making the Drayton power play from last year where he just doesn’t sign anyone and forces Herman to switch another recruit’s position?  “Count JQJ as one of my biggest LB recruiting victories yet!”

DB count seems likely to total 5. I doubt we’d take 6, unless Ringo wants in at the end. We’re only looking at 2-3 WRs.

We’ll have room for 1-2 LBs, including potential transfers.

Texas has plenty of LBs, and Orlando loves taking JUCOs. Tillman and Gbenda have been doing well in the "my told" reports, both seem to be hits. If Floyd can play next year, even better, though I think he's going pro if he has 2 healthy productive seasons, and I wouldn't blame him.

The plan at LB is:

-Tillman looks great and might end up starting this year (is he the most unheralded signee? at least the most unheralded early enrollee, but critical if he really is developing in such a manner this early)

-Gbenda takes a similar jump on the learning curve as he settles in (he was expected to be the early contributor but wasn’t an EE)

-Floyd gets medically cleared (I don’t see it)

-One of the JUCO signees makes an appearance as a player

-stay on Chris Thompson and see what happens if Auburn falls apart (does the payment to the parents keep him locked in with a new regime? is this guy an EE?)

-one of Hullaby and JQJ becomes an LB

-if Overshown isn’t made of glass, does he eventually see LB-esque action with a DB label this season and does that work for him and the defense?

-Owens might fit that bill eventually if Overshown doesn’t

-they have a target that they do not want to be public right now (they’re hoping he stays hidden, a la Gary Johnson in 2017, or he’s committed elsewhere and they feel really good about a flip)

-they will scour the transfer/GT landscape all the way up to next summer

So yeah, none of us feel like LB is sorted, but Orlando has a lot of optionality, which he craves.
