So other than Roger Vick, what other Tomball alums ever made a big-school roster?

Marcelo Simmons, maybe? Or was he Conroe? Long time ago, so I don't remember clearly.

Recruiting rankings are important to TEXAS insofar as they confirm that we are a serious contender nationally. As long as we are living in the same neighborhood as Clemson, they are unlikely to hamstring us too badly. I would like to see TEXAS ranked #1 every year but not by virtue of our recruits' being paid their due in rankings but rather by virtue of having kicked everybody's ass in taking who we want. Changing our ranking without changing our players should be satisfying to the aggy in all of us, but I doubt there is anyone at Clemson losing sleep about how their players weren't ranked as highly as Bama's right now. If anything, it benefits us to have fantastic players somewhat underrated by the recruiting services so as to spotlight how TEXAS helps athletes excel by comparison of recruiting rank to subsequent on-field performance.

What is up with posters writing TEXAS in all caps? Is this like a relic from some other board? It is a beating to read through posts like this.

I have been known to do it to distinguish the school from the state. I had no idea it was bothersome. It is easier for me to quit than to continue.

I was wondering the same thing.  Every time I see it, I want to yell FIGHT.

All good. I just didn't want this type of thing to catch on or I will start to develop a twitch and need to go sit with Randolph Duke in the loony bin. This means you too @LTtxfan

Herman and Beck were at LT today checking in on Card and a few other players. Herman spent a few hours with Carter and Stein relationship building.

E.J. Holland: Previewing a monster recruiting weekend for Texas

Offered Targets

RB Ty Jordan, West Mesquite (2020) — Texas extended an offer to Jordan in the summer after an impressive camp performance. The Longhorns have been dubbed the early leaders in his recruitment and with good reason. Jordan absolutely loves Texas and sees himself as a great scheme fit in Austin,

WR Demond Demas, Tomball (2020) — A five-star prospect, Demas gave Texas A&M an early commitment. However, Demas has since visited Texas on multiple occasions and will be back on campus this weekend. If the Longhorns can keep good friend Javonne Shepherd in the fold this cycle, there is a pretty decent chance they can eventually flip Demas. Despite his verbal pledge to the Aggies, there is still a long way to go in this recruitment.

OL Chad Lindberg, Clear Creek (2020) — Texas is out in front on the 247Sports Crystal Ball for Lindberg, who might be the best offensive lineman in the state next cycle. Lindberg has already made several visits to Texas and is growing close to UT’s commits in the 2020 class. While Texas is making a strong impression early on, Lindberg is still intrigued by schools like Clemson, Georgia and Stanford. Still, Texas has to like where it stands early on.

OL Jake Majors, Prosper (2020) — If you are looking for a commit candidate this weekend, Majors may be your guy. The three-star prospect has visited campus on numerous occasions, including a recent bowl practice, and loves what the Longhorns have to offer. Stanford is the other school high on his mind, but we’ve heard that Majors prefers to stay closer to home. Like Lindberg, Majors has already bonded with UT’s 2020 class.

DL Vernon Broughton, Cy Ridge (2020) — It’s a strong year in-state when it comes to defensive linemen, and Broughton might be the best of the bunch. An athletic monster in the trenches, Broughton has offers from schools across the country. Alabama and Texas appear to be the two schools standing out to him the most at this time, and the Longhorns’ Sugar Bowl win definitely helped their cause in this recruitment. Getting him back on campus is huge.

LB Kendrick Blackshire, Mesquite Horn (2021) — It’s still early in the recruitment of Blackshire, who is ranked as the nation’s top inside linebacker in his class. Blackshire has a ton of major offers early on and notched one from the Longhorns last month. Right now, schools like Oklahoma and LSU are high on his mind, but Texas will have a chance to make a big impression this weekend.

DB Chris Thompson, Duncanville (2020) — The nation’s top 2020 safety is gearing up to make a return visit to Texas. The Longhorns have regained momentum in this recruitment and might be the team to beat heading into the spring. But Thompson wants to take things slow as he evaluates all of his options. He remains high on LSU and Texas A&M as well as schools like Florida and Stanford.

DB Jaylon Jones, Cibolo Steele (2020) — This one is turning into a good, old-fashioned Texas vs. Texas A&M recruiting battle. The Aggies built up plenty of early steam with Jones, but the Longhorns have come surging back. This is an extremely important visit as Jones will get to bond with the Texas coaching staff as well as commits in the 2020 class. Florida is the other school in serious contention for Jones.

DB Bryson Washington, Houston CE King (2020) — Washington is waiting to announce his commitment in July, but it’s clear Oklahoma, Texas and Texas A&M have separated themselves early on in his recruitment. Washington has always loved Texas and made a handful of visits in the summer and the fall. Texas safeties coach Craig Naivar saw Washington earlier this week and has built a strong relationship with him.

On the radar

QB Hunter Dunn, Tomball (2020) — Texas already has a quarterback commitment in the 2020 cycle, but Dunn could be an intriguing second take. The three-star prospect holds an offer from Temple.

LB Brennon Scott, Bishop Dunne (2020) — A four-star prospect, Scott visited Texas in the fall and has been hoping for an offer for a while. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Longhorns extend a scholarship this weekend.

LB Josh White, Cy Creek (2020) — White gave Oklahoma State an early commitment but has been blowing up on the recruiting trail. Like with Scott, it wouldn’t be surprising if Texas enters the mix this weekend.

Commits

QB Hudson Card, Lake Travis (2020) — Card committed to Texas last year and is quickly becoming the leader of the 2020 recruiting class. He is completely solid.

OL Logan Parr, SA O’Connor (2020) — Parr gave Texas a verbal pledge in October and is locked in. He is ready to help the Longhorns recruit other top offensive line targets.

Is there any shot they got another look at Card, realized what a horrible mistake they’d made, withdrew their offer and then immediately flew to Longview?

Evans, George and McClellan are in for the weekend, Chris Thompson and Ty Jordan are out. Dobrah still a maybe but EJ said he felt good about him making it in.

Thompson being out sucks. Jordan... well I'd be good with Mookie in that spot.

OL Jaylen Garth, Port Neches-Groves (2020) — Garth may be another prospect to monitor this weekend. While he really likes Texas A&M, UT has been separating itself as the team to beat over the last month. The staff has been making a hard push with Garth, and like most prospects, he was impressed with the way UT played in the trenches in the Sugar Bowl. Garth was a teammate of Texas signee Roschon Johnson, and the two are extremely close.

EJ added this update to his weekend preview and then posted in the comments to read inbetween the lines and out his coffee emoji. Real inconspicuous

I see Jordan as more of a home-run hitting RB2 while Mookie is the do-everything slot.

Also, we can't count on Mookie being a lock this early.

I'm glad we're recruiting Jordan. Mookie might be a lean and Evans is the big fish but until they're in we need to keep recruiting behind them.

A month ago we were all complaining about how we didn't have any Plan B's behind Cain and Sanders. Glad the staff is fixing that this cycle.

With Evans in attendance, I wouldn't be surprised to see the staff push for a couple of big-time OL commits. Lindberg seems pretty firm about taking visits, so Majors and Garth committing make a lot of sense, if they can make it happen.

EJ’s updates on Evans and George:

RB Zachary Evans, North Shore (2020) — Perhaps the most important recruit in the 2020 class, Evans is making his way to Texas yet again. He visited UT more than any other school last calendar year, and the Longhorns have put themselves in a strong spot to land the generational talent. Evans is also high on schools like Georgia, LSU and Texas A&M, but UT has a ton of momentum here.

OL Damieon George, North Shore (2020) — A mammoth offensive tackle, George is one of the more intriguing prospects in the 2020 class. George was thought to be leaning towards playing in the SEC, but Texas is surging in this recruitment. George loved the way the Longhorns played in the Sugar Bowl and is excited about getting down to Austin. George and the aforementioned Evans would love to play together, and Texas is a school of mutual interest.

This, I Think Mookie is more slot and Ty is a perfect take now as a RB2 to compliment Evans and protect us against the chance we miss on him.

I agree. Definitely want him in burnt orange. Could be an amazing anchor for our d-line.

If we want our 3 DL fronts to work against the elite teams, we have to land the Collins and Broughtons of the world. No excuses.

Majors has seemed to be ready to jump on board since the Sugar Bowl, IMO.
