Marvel Cinematic Universe the Endless Phase: Tripping Balls (Spoilers)

I think that’s a bit revisionist or at least focusing on the negative as far as the TV shows go. 3 of the first 5 were great (Wandavision, Loki, what if), one very good (Hawkeye), with only one miss in Falcon and WS. Shehulk and Ms Marvel weren’t bad, they were just made for different audiences. New DD was great. Sequals to what if, Loki, WV (Agatha) along with the new animation zombies, eyes of wakanda, and friendly neighborhood spider man were all very good (spiderman was a huge hit).

They whiffed hard on 2 (Invasion, Falcon), had 2 or 3 meh, but have otherwise had 10+ solid to great series come out of all of it, meant for mostly the “main audience” (nerdy probably white males) but also branching out a bit in audience and style.

I believe you and defer to you, I just mean that to continue the level of mainstream, broad critical AND commercial success (and numbers) a la the Thanos arc, they've fumbled pretty badly and it seems that reverting back to RDJ and Chris Evans is an acknowledgment of that. The future is obviously to introduce the "new class" of actors who can take MCU back to the top on another 10 year arc, but it doesn't feel like they've quite found their footing there yet. It's like a football team who drafte dthe QB of the future in the first round but it was a bust and now they are bringing back Joe Flaco or something until they can reset.

Agree they have not found their footing on the next big arc. I do wonder if the combination of having to reset with Krang plus covid factored in. A lot of things got delayed / shuffled / canceled right after Endgame.

Spider-Man did numbers right after endgame. Black Widow would have killed it in theaters I think. It was a good movie and was passing the baton to Yelana and Red. Then things shut down for 2 years. Momentum lost, direction changed.  Shang chi was not a bad movie and I think keeps things moving solidly if it wasn’t the first MCU movie in theaters since the pandemic. And again, they weren’t all bombs, just nothing to carry the franchise and narrative. Spider-Man 3 was great, Guardians 3 was great, Thunderbolts was very good (great? Such a different feel and I like it).  Thor 4 was a big let down. I’m convinced Natalie Portman kills franchises as much as I lover her. They probably should have built around Guardians, Yelana, and SpiderMan before the excitement around them cooled, but I think they were hoping on Krang and Thor and thrown a curveball plus Antman 3 was awful.

Chadwick Boseman dying also robbed them of the one newer character who could have carried it forward.  He was a good actor who could have pulled it off.

Ah. Yep. Knew i was forgetting something. BP2 was never going to live up to expectations after the first, but no Boseman really hurt.

I wonder if the MCU would benefit from a departure from the TV shows all basically being nine hour movies and go to something more episodic, X-Files style.

Have you watched agents of shield?  Episodic with and over arching story line, similar to xfiles or sg1. I enjoyed it quite a bit for what it was - an ABC show living on the main network with a limited budget. I would like to see them try something like it again but with a Disney budget and not handcuffed by what can be said/shown on over the air tv at 7p on a weeknight

Yeah, didn’t love it. Felt like a WB show. I thought most of the TV stuff has been subpar.

New stuff is great if it’s great. See: Guardians of the Galaxy

wtf is everyone bitching about? Avengers brings the heroes together to fight a villain they couldn’t handle (in a movie) by themselves. And the comics has always been about returning a dead or forgotten hero for one last stand. If you’re a comic geek you know that the incursion storyline was being set up, granted with some actor related setbacks.

I think Wonder Man looks interesting.

It does look good. And

spoilers

He's a Sentry-level being. At least in the comics.

Yeah but it's another instance of having to watch a Disney+ show to make a post Endgame character relevant. Feels like the audience for that has moved on.

#1324

He's getting a one shot on Disney+ some point after the next Spiderman movie as he's one of many supporting players in that.

That's how they actually introduce the FF into the primary universe?

I'm not apposed to more Namor and Wakandans...but give me more for FF.

So glad Marvel finally nailed the Thing. He's just fucking awesome.

It's funny, just did a re-watch of Fantastic Four and he was among the things that didn't work for me. I like him more in that 5 seconds with Shuri and M'Baku than anything in the film.

The biggest miss, in my opinion, is Pascal playing Richards as a superhero Woody Allen. I don't know why you cast the Red Viper and not let him cook.

FF was far from perfect but Thing was my favorite character. Loved that he was low-key, dropping one liners, showing off for the school kids and doing baby duties. I only wish they had spent some more time on him and Natasha Lyonne.

The prospect of The Hulk and Thing whipping some ass together on screen has my inner 6 year old smuggs ready to explode.

I do, too--in a different universe (errrr...multiverse), Marvel Studios does a 6 ep miniseries introducing the team* and I think everything works better.

*I'm okay skipping the origin story on this, too--it's more that film relies HEAVILY on the charisma of the cast to make you care about the characters and I don't think it works unless you're already a comics fan.

You can do nebbish Reed because you've more firmly established arrogant Reed leads to Ben's disfigurement. You can make Johnny and Ben more central to the story by having their own adventures separately. Probably the best version of Johnny Storm I've seen is as a guest in Ultimate Spiderman (yes, I'm coming totally out of the closet nerd on this) where he's kind of a sheltered rock star on the outside but also very sweet and sincere.

Roberto Aguirre Sacasa did a F4 run that had Sue demonstrate a degree of power that the film cribbed, but the way it left the team a little in awe was a missed note.

Loki - good
WandaVision - good
No Way Home - good
Shang-Chi - good
Deadpool & Wolverine - good
Agatha All Along - good
GOTG3 - good
F4 - good enough

Focus on the good! Be positive!

Also, can we get more shit from xmen, please? The scene where magneto rolls up in Argentina is absolute perfection.

My parents were from Dusseldorf. Oh they didn't have a name, it was taken from them...

Which would you care to shed first? Blood then

He pulls this off while looking like Doc Sam Beckett on a lazy Sunday afternoon

Strange is confirmed in, but I think his role is bigger in Secret Wars

Both marvels - no idea. But monica is probably going to be with the xmen

Ghost - come on. Really? She’s with the new avengers and they have already shown them detecting FF entering our universe. That was filmed by the people making this movie

Moon knight- pretty sure this isn’t his fight.

Eternals - locked up in celestial jail

This scene was such a standout that it made the movie around it a little worse for not measuring up.

Before X-Men First Class was greenlit there was a bunch of concepts in production, and one was just young Magneto on a Nazi vengeance tour. I've never seen an interview with the two original screenwriters on First Class, but at a minimum it has to have inspired this scene, and may have been taken directly.

With those directors, and the soft "reset" bringing the old stars back it won't suck...but may not meet the Endgame/Infinity War level hype

You know the answer...they want to see the older guys, not the new.

Yeah it was great...and glad they let them have Days of Future Past to really sell them as the new X-Men.

But I'm guessing the old Fox X'Men will be in this more.
