Well, every songwriter almost always considers the last song they wrote as the best song they ever wrote. It's really hard to put it all in perspective. Maybe that song just has more personal meaning to him than the ones that resonate with his fans. Pop music history is absolutely rife with tales of the biggest hits being the last songs to make the albums -- the artist is not even close to the best arbiter of public sentiment. The public is.

December 23, 20205 yr Holy shit.... Country music from the capitol of country music. SWEDEN! That steel player is incredible. And I don't know what kind of guitar that lead guy is playing but I want one. Just fun, fun music. After a short visit to CR, I needed that. Edited December 23, 20205 yr by hullabelew

And Jay singing with Kelly on one she cowrote with Gary Louris from The Jayhawks. Before I moved to Houston 2009, I used to frequent some South Austin Jug Band concerts around the CenTex area. They recorded a version of KW's He Don't Care About Me. These guys were a really good band with great live shows, really miss them.

His dad was Champ Hood who was in Uncle Walt's Band and played with just about everyone in Austin in the 70s and 80s.

I recorded Champ along with Toni Price one night after a Continental Club Hippie Hour, since my studio was just a couple of blocks away, making it easy for them to swing by. They were feeling no pain.

He used to be part of REK's band, not sure if he still is. I hit my fair share of south austin jug band shows back in the day.
December 30, 20204 yr Awesome. I know that Warren used to play with them......see that Brian has also played with them. Stumbled upon this. FUCK, I wish people would just shut up and listen to fantastic music.

January 17, 20214 yr The Steel Woods co-founder/guitarman passed away yesterday. Really sucks. They really had something together. Their first two albums were great. I would think they were probably making some new music during the pandemic too. Cause of death was not released. I think I posted a couple of their covers in the Covers thread.
January 20, 20214 yr Speaking of Bruce's "The Next Waltz" project, last year Wade Bowen and Holly Williams recorded one of Robyn Ludwick's songs. Robyn is Bruce's sister and Kelly suggested they do this song. What a stellar song and performance. Also, Robyn and her husband, Lunchmeat, own The Devil's Backbone Tavern of Todd Snider fame. Lunchmeat has played bass for Bruce and Charlie for years. Great dude. https://thenextwaltz.bandcamp.com/track/wade-bowen-holly-williams-bars-aint-closing
January 22, 20214 yr I met Robyn and Lunchmeat at my last live show before covid at the Todd and Jack gig at Devil's Backbone. Cool people. Jack flicked a pick at Lunchmeat a good 20 feet and hit him right between the eyes. It was incredible.

February 4, 20214 yr Not sure if this is the thread for the "Morgan Wallen getting dropped from his labels after smashing a new record of downloads/streams a couple weeks ago" but I guess this post didn't age well: "[Morgan Wallen] seemed like a cool guy on Theo Von's podcast, but yea, his music leaves a lot to be desired. I wanted him to be like the Shia LeBouf of Nashville Gen-Z"
February 4, 20214 yr Fuck him. We were down in Port A for NYE and doing takeout somewhere and his version of Cover Me up came on. Holy shit it was awful. How could anyone enjoy that over Jason's masterpiece?

There were 3-4 times in my 20's that the Sunday afternoon, the day after floating the river, South Austin Jug Band would be playing at Gruene Hall. Absolutely loved watching them. Their version of 'Friend of the Devil' is absolute gold. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWAf8V1LzlE
March 2, 20214 yr I don't think they have their own thread here, but I just saw that The Bottle Rockets are hanging it up. For those that don't know, they were birthed out of the same St Louis scene as Uncle Tupelo (and hence Wilco and Son Volt). The front man, Brian Henneman, plays that bitchin' riff on Wilco's "Casino Queen". They were a fucking brilliant band in their own right, and I got to see them open for McMurtry back in 2011. What a great night of music.
March 2, 20214 yr 3 minutes ago, 4th&Five said: wow...i guess i saw their last tour then. I was supposed to see them open for Turnpike and Old 97's in 2018, and they had to cancel at the last second. The other two bands put on a great show, but it was a definitely a loss to the evening. Just a complete bummer that 2/3rds of that line up is no longer a going concern. But in the Bottle Rockets announcement, Brian makes it clear that he's ready to live a normal life, finally, as a 60 year old. He's tired of being a road dog, and just wants to be home, enjoying life. Can't blame him.
