He talked about her on a podcast interview this winter. It sounds pretty complicated. She bailed on the family when he was pretty young and had some serious mental health and drug problems. But he credits her for his artistic gifts, and loves her fiercely in spite of that.
April 5Apr 5 Probably what @Al_4_ISU is talking about: The whole interview is really good. I'm sure there are mixed feelings about Bert (I think he's funny but I don't take him too seriously), but the interview may have well been between his wife and SWJ. She's pretty fucking cool.
April 5Apr 5 I'm rewatching the doc about Isbell shot by Sam Jones ~2019. Somebody tell me -- besides being hot and weird, does anyone think Amanda Shires is actually a good fiddle player? She has this reedy tone and is consistently off pitch. And weird. But hot.

That’s the one. I like (don’t love) Bert, and get why some people can’t stand him, but he definitely has a way of making people comfortable and getting honesty from them.

April 6Apr 6 If anyone wants two wristbands for tonight's Two-Step show let me know, I can't go and the dumbass who said she'd take them via a neighorhood listserv never showed. $400 of tix down the drain. I'm not selling them, I'm giving them away, and she still bailed with no notice. I hate people.
April 7Apr 7 @jimmyjazz that sucks. A sturgill simpson show was announced on the video board at two-step if you wanted to catch it. Mon at stubbs.
April 7Apr 7 During his show at two step, sturgill said his monday show at stubbs will be four hours. He’s probably joking but he’s difficult to read. Dry sense of humor on stage.
April 7Apr 7 Sturgill did a reggae cover of eddie murphy’s “party all the time”. I cracked up when I recognized it. I’m probably the only one around me at the show that picked up on it.
April 7Apr 7 That sounds amazing. Trying to figure out presale but even Ticketmaster app won't show a link to enter presale code... Guess I'll try my luck in the morning. I love Austin.

April 7Apr 7 I’m spamming this thread now but wanted to mention that stephen wilson jr did perform at two step. He said his mom was doing better. He told a story about his first kiss failure and liking nirvana at the time. He then subtly worked the smells like teen spirit riff into his next song. I’m not familiar with him but I’m gonna look into it.
April 7Apr 7 Yeah that riff is how that song starts usually, but cool he told a story as lead in. Year To Be Young 1994 I would check out his set from when he did Live From the Print Shop on Youtube...it's pretty great, but he probably played all those the other night.

I remain gobsmacked by the guy's lyrics, but as a rock band, eh. That wasn't great. It certainly wasn't near the best set of his I've seen. No Vampires, Elephant, or Speed Trap Town. Guess he just doesn't play Cover Me Up anymore - didn't play it at all in Austin and hasn't played it since February. I really enjoyed the new songs, and their full band arrangements were great and sounded like they've been playing them together for years. And maybe I'm in the minority here, but Danko/Manuel is soooo boring, especially as a show closer? Yikes. Saw him walking solo up south Congress on Saturday with a STAG shopping bag in hand.

April 7Apr 7 Yeah, the Friday show probably had the worst set list and didn’t have great energy. My wife and I had a long week, so we enjoyed just sitting in the corner and listening to good tunes. We were happy with it. If you were looking for something more, I can see how it would have been disappointing.
April 8Apr 8 Great show. Wasn't sure if he was teasing everyone because he kept counting down 3.5 hours, but by gawd he done it. For whatever reason, my favorite moment of the night was him playing 'Juanita'. Just didn't expect anything to be played from that album. But super satisfied that he played damn near everything I would want to hear overall. I'd have been pretty satisfied just to hear 'I Don't Mind'.
April 8Apr 8 I was out at Two-Step, enjoyed the show, but damn that setlist for Stubbs destroys the one I saw.
April 9Apr 9 I can’t tell how “big” MJ Lenderman is. He seems huge in my algorithm but he keeps not being known by people I would expect to know him. New music video for wristwatch

April 9Apr 9 Yeah I’m on the bandwagon. It’s interesting - I don’t have a single song that is the “oh check this guy out” song. I don’t know that any of his songs are 10s for me but he has a whole bunch of 7s and 8s.

I've seen a lot of pictures of him with one of those Squier J Mascis Jazzmasters. I kinda want one, even though the one I picked up off the wall at the local GC felt like shit. Badly setup guitar at eye level in a guitar center, I want to believe that it's a super cool cheapish guitar 20 hours ago, Al_4_ISU said: Not an obvious influence, but it reminded me of Ben Kweller's early stuff too (which was definitely influenced by Dinosaur Jr) I wore Sha Sha out in my 1996 Pontiac Sunfire, and then I don't think I listened to it for another 10 (checks calendar, fuck) 15-20 years. "Falling" came into my head one day when I was singing my daughter to sleep, and then his kid died tragically, and I've kinda rediscovered those songs. There was something about his preciousness that I always didn't like but that album holds up really well IMO. It's interesting listening to it on Spotify and seeing the full credits - like Kimya Dawson does backing vocals on the title track? Had no idea. Wasted and Ready and Commerce TX are both peak "getting shithammered and being excited about high school is almost over" songs for me. Edited April 10Apr 10 by Celery Man
