April 28Apr 28 Not sure where this goes. The Boss standing in for Joe Ely as Joe couldn't make his American Music Honors set. Get well soon, Joe.
April 29Apr 29 Heard James perform this at Galery show few weeks back; believe it will be on new album. This may end up being a top 5 McMurtry song for me. Great songwriting with some gems in there: "He's a real boy now, his dick grows when he lies" "They don't have to come and take it if you give it all away" Edited April 29Apr 29 by 40acredropout
May 1May 1 I missed Luke Bell when he was alive and didn’t like this song the first time it came around in the algorithm, but it weaseled in there and has been in my head all day

I need more of that kind of stuff finding its way in to the rotation
May 2May 2 As good a place as any for this which is certainly the best name ever for an 80th birthday party https://tickets.austintheatre.org/12127 Quote “Jimmie Dale Gilmore Marks It 80” will feature the West Texas Exiles with special guests Jo Harvey Allen, Terry Allen, Dave Alvin, John Doe, Rosie Flores, Butch Hancock, Bill Kirchen, Carrie Rodriguez, Bonnie Whitmore, Kelly Willis and more. Proceeds will go to HAAM and the Sims Foundation.
May 2May 2 Fucking love Jimmie Dale. Some of my buddies were staying with me for SXSW as their band was doing a bunch of shows, and we met him at Polvo's. I only fanboy'd out a tiny bit. His wife (I think?) asked if we knew him from the Big Lebowski. I said that while I am familiar with Smokey, that we were actually fans of the Flatlanders. A few years later I saw the Flatlanders at the Paramount. It was kind of a roundtable situation and Joe Ely ended up taking Dallas, which really pissed me off, as I wanted to hear Jimmie Dale sing that one.
May 2May 2 Neither the wife and I are fans of Foxes in the Snow, but we already had tix to Isbell's show last night. I thought about bailing, but went and HOLY FUCK, HE WAS GREAT. The Foxes songs with the band backing him were really good. Wife turned to me during "Open and Close" and asked, "Why in the world did he make that album acoustic?"

I knew her years ago here in Austin, and have always wondered what happened to her. She played with a friend's son in an acoustic-y band called The Hudsons. Talented gal. He has some good shit, but I care for his older stuff more.....2013 In the Throes (which the song you posted is on) and 2015 High on Tulsa Heat albums I hope you are stable though cause a lot of his shit is wrist slitting worthy lol Edited May 7May 7 by Scraps

I pulled over into a Walmart parking lot and cried my eyes out. First and only time I cried during the whole ordeal.

Stepping back to his pre-americana days, I like his stuff with the black gold band and the dist bowl souls. I’ve been looking for a vinyl copy of “things I can’t control” for years.
May 8May 8 Have we talked about John Moreland here? I would assume so but I’m hopping on the train Saw a Moreland/Isbell concert here several years ago. Slammed. Went hard.
May 8May 8 This video is interesting. Did a double take when I saw it with my break superimposing Townes’ head into the shot, which of course is what this guy was going for

May 12May 12 How does Zach Bryan sell his catalog for $350M and Bruce Springsteen only pulls $500M? Are my numbers wrong? That's nuts.
May 12May 12 Yellowstone, man. I enjoy Mr. Moreland’s music as well as some of Mr. Bryan’s songs but I don’t know anything about their personal lives. Counting on Celery and Al to let me know whose side to take.
May 12May 12 I am a fan of both and don't really think they are even really the same music wise. I think Moreland is being a fucking massive jealous dickhead. Could ZB have been an ass to his wife and friends....sure, but Morelands original post screams jealousy. (Its not the video that was posted above that was a response to ZB's response to Morelands original post)Really was no point for him to even comment on the deal. So ZB saw it and decided....hey fuck you man we just did a song together on my last album.....so fuck it you gone....and he has pulled the song and is rereleasing without Moreland on it. Petty? Maybe....but I don't blame him. Moreland talking shit so fuck off buddy. I think both of them can be, and have been, dickheads to people so Morelands all high and mighty shit is wack.
May 12May 12 Well, if you talk shit about a guy you probably shouldn't be surprised if he dumps you off his album.

Counting on Celery and Al to let me know whose side to take. Moreland has a habit of shit talking more successful artists, and sometimes in ways that show an extreme lack of self awareness. Picking a bar fight with Kyle Nix of Turnpike and then calling him a “midget” comes to mind. ZB has been increasingly shown to be an immature jealous dude-bro that generally treats people like shit and acts like he’s untouchable. Videos of him being a huge asshole in an NYC bar, his ex’s whole story (which I don’t entirely buy), and now Moreland’s allegations (which are consistent with the other things). Moreland is Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons. Bryan is generic spoiled celebrity. I don’t think I’d want to hang with either, even though I like both of their music. Edited May 12May 12 by Al_4_ISU
May 12May 12 Always bums me out a bit when I find out artists I dig are jackasses. It shouldn’t by now, but their tunes def resonate differently afterward
May 12May 12 I don't know nearly enough about either of these guys to be the person whose opinion you should follow but yeah Moreland's post without any other context was shitheaded, and I wonder if Zach Bryan is going to have a "getting off of massive amounts of coke" album that will be really good in a few years. Or maybe he'll be Ryan Adams.
May 12May 12 I, for one, welcome a ZB crash so he can play the venues Moreland does and I don't have to deal with 50000+ people lmao

May 21May 21 Don't know if there are any Charles Wesley Godwin fans here, but he just announced Texas stops in September....Helotes, Houston, Fort Worth

July 3Jul 3 New Tyler Childers single dropped yesterday. Album July 24th. I don't hate it, but he's yet to recapture the magic of Purgatory IMO.

This song is older than Purgatory. One of his many fan favorites that never made it past a terribly recorded YouTube clip
July 3Jul 3 Holy crap. Brandi on vocals, Sheryl on piano, and I'm not sure they made even the tiniest flub. Honestly I never really got the depth of this song until now, Bonnie's version was much glossier. Edited July 3Jul 3 by jimmyjazz

I really think that may have been his best album, top to bottom.I really like Pinocchio in Vegas, the Black Dog and the Wandering Boy, and South Texas Lawman. Two covers out of ten songs is a bit much, but I guess we should just be thankful he’s still putting out good albums this late in his career.

Sheryl is just a bit older than me, and several of my friends were in the Mizzou school of music with her. After she graduated she started teaching at a public elementary school just west of St. Louis. She's come full circle in that video I posted -- now she even LOOKS like an elementary school music teacher. Edited July 8Jul 8 by jimmyjazz
