Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Chris Stapleton, and Other Good Stuff

Sheryl is just a bit older than me, and several of my friends were in the Mizzou school of music with her.  After she graduated she started teaching at a public elementary school just west of St. Louis.  She's come full circle in that video I posted -- now she even LOOKS like an elementary school music teacher.

An elementary school music teacher who absolutely could still get it.

Snipe Hunter is interesting. Definitely a different sound. I thought I hated it at first but I think I’m going to wind up sitting with it and coming around.

Yo check it out. It’s my my morning jacket, jacket.

I really hate Down Under.

i fuckin’ love Eatin’ Big Time, Bitin’ List, Oneida, and Grindstone.

Everything else is fine.  Really, this seems to be where I’ve come down on every album since Purgatory.  Some great songs, but just not a great album.

If I wasn’t paying particularly close attention to the lyrics and the song was decontextualized and you told me that Down Under was a Christmas song from an Americana Christmas album I’d nod and accept that as true.

Good thing you specified.  I assumed you were talking about Julian Dorio (the periodontist).

It's annoying as hell?

Ok so it’s not just me

I 80% like SWJ and I think I hate him with the other 20%. Video here is perfect - his voice and vibe sonically is cool and definitely interesting. But why did they start with a whiskey advertisement and why is it shot like a snuff film, why do they have the wardrobe of the Vermont Ponderosa’s? I believe his guitar could look like that based on his style and playing and I’m sure he’s put a lot hours on that instrument but I’m also certain he’s used steel fingerpicks to get there.

i dunno. He’s in the mix, I like several of his songs.

mmj at red rocks isn’t really a show as much as it is a way of life.

I have this visceral negative reaction to open string tunings and playing like that. It’s like a weird cheat code to me. It’s me for sure, I can’t really justify it.

You had to have been right behind me. I was house left planter 5.

Ha. No, not me. I actually took that when a I ran to grab a beer. I was row 27 center. Love that they did an Eras show though. They’re always mixing it up.

I don't really know where to put this, so I'll put it here.  Some of you know Rich Brotherton, and many more have seen and heard him as Robert Earl Keen's trusty guitarist for decades.  He retired from Robert's band a few years back.  He has actually posted on UT boards in the past.

Well, he has some bad news.  He has been diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).  I'm nowhere near his closest friend but we've known each other for years, recorded together, swapped gear, etc. and I can confidently say this sucks ass and that he is one of the most gifted, kind and humble musicians in Austin.  He seems to be doing OK so far, but we all know where that disease goes.  I'll let him speak to the details from his Facebook post.

Yea that sucks to hear. Fucking brutal disease.

I posted about this in the "concerts you are attending" thread, but if you're into Jason Molina's music, the surviving members of Magnolia Electric Company are getting together with Will Johnson of Centromatic to do a few shows playing Jason Molina/Magonlia Electric songs in Texas. They're playing at 29th Street Ballroom in September.

Damn. That would be incredible. Hope it finds its way to nugs.

I'll put this here.  My daughter tipped me off.  I'm embarassed, this was released in 1972!  I don't think I've ever heard it, and that includes a Jackson Browne cover.

I'm an idiot, but I am willing to learn.  What a lovely song.

Childers seems like such a good dude. TLJ looking like an old man. Same with REK, who looks sober skinny.

No.  Here he is as a junior in high school.

Let's call it good stuff for as long as we can.  Joe Ely is probably in my top 5 live performers of all time.  He hs been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia.  This doesn't end well.  Pour one out for Joe:
