September 2, 20196 yr I saw RoJo had a couple of pass receptions Sat. I'm glad they have faith in throwing him the ball. Could be useful come Sat. night.

How is that not writing him off as QB, exactly? But you do make a good point. I should have a drink. Later Surly. That's kind of the whole fucking point. Given our RB room, it make sense to move him there this year and burn his redshirt, but it's not a positive that we're doing so and taking away a whole season of practice reps at QB for a guy who really needs the reps to develop. Herman and Beck can develop dual threat QBs. The last twenty years are irrelevant because we had different coaches. If Whittington, Young and Johnson get healthy this season, maybe RoJo can move back to QB despite the burned redshirt, and then redshirt next year... that would be a decision for him and the coaches.
September 2, 20196 yr Freakin RB MASH unit... Whittington -- sports hernia/groin (4-6 wks?) Young -- high ankle sprain (4-6 wks?) Kirk J. -- clavicle/shoulder (6+wks??) Derrian -- suffered stroke (out minimum a yr) Jarrett Smith -- shoulder injury (out how long?) Jaren Watkins -- EMS from practice (out -- no info?) Ingram had a bone bruise in knee area too... If Ehlinger and Casey Thompson return next year, he can redshirt then and learn the QB position more - the RB depth will be much better next year. Sam isn't leaving early, man. As much as he's loved, he's not even close to being an NFL qb.

It wasn't just a "bowl game" blueprint. Ehlinger is one of our best weapons on offense and they used him as such in close/big games. Of course it wasn't just a bowl game blueprint, but you proved my point in showing that he got more carries against UGA than in all of those other big games. Because it does matter that the next game is in a week, not in eight months. And we need to be running Sam less, not more, or he will continue to get knocked out of multiple games per year.

September 2, 20196 yr Author Ingram looked good last week. RoJo looked good for an RB2. We have Gbenda and Smith in case of emergency. This is better quality depth than last year when we had Watson, smoke, mirrors, and hope.

Honestly, it’s hard for us to recruit many grad transfers due to enrollment requirements. However this is another lesson learned by this staff that you can never have too many weapons. We tried to recruit Stevenson from a JUCO but were late and ou got him. Drayton came from ahead to finish 2nd for Cain last year, D. Brown was bad luck for us, no one thought JWitt was recruited as a RB until he showed up in the spring. Most of us wanted to see greater urgency in the Portal/JUCO in late spring.
September 2, 20196 yr Duv is built like a RB. Might need to give him carries out of the backfield. Him or Jake smith. No point in making a LB in Gbenda take snaps. Smith is fucking good out of the backfield and played lot of RB in high school.

September 2, 20196 yr Two thoughts: 1) There were zero legitimate options in the transfer portal besides Feaster. We'd have been better off talking Kyle Porter into staying. 2) We need to run Ingram into the ground against LSU if that is what it takes. Motion Smith/Duvernay into the backfield or run some jet sweeps to eat up 5-6 carries and give Roschon 5-8. We can treat Rice like a bye week, manufacture carries at RB, and give Ingram another week to rest up for Okie State (Young may also be back for this). Then we get to the bye. Obviously if Ingram turns an ankle or something we're screwed.
September 2, 20196 yr Yes, let's run our one good running back into the ground in an early season nonconference matchup, that'll be a great look for the program!

But Ingram is going to have bear the brunt of things. It is what it is.

I actually agree with him. You give Ingram every carry if the game is close and sub Duv and RoJo for 3-5 carries each. I find it funny how posters were puffing their chests out when I suggested we sit Ingram and Whittington out of meaningless fall scrimmages yet people now want to limit his carries in potentially our biggest game of the year. Regardless this whole situation is fucked. Need to get through this game and then we can fucking win against Rice with me starting at tailback. Ingram can have 2 weeks to rest.

If you're suggesting 20-22 carries plus 5-7 touches in the air, I'm in agreement. Anything more than that and it gets tricky.
September 2, 20196 yr Anyone balking at Ingram getting 20-25 carries is balking at him getting 5-10 extra touches in one game. A few extra touches in week 2, followed by a cupcake and a bye, are not going to derail his season. You can't "run him into the ground" for the year in week 2.Yes there's marginally increased injury risk with additional touches, but 1.) He's got injury issues anyway and that risk exists every snap; 2.) The risk of getting injured on touch 22 is not any different than that of touch 15; 3.) What's the the legit alternative?Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
September 2, 20196 yr Getting some guys back by Okie State is much more urgent than worrying about the OU game. OSU is very solid, much more of a Big 12 contender than any of ISU, BU or TCU. We cannot get beat by mullet again. Gbenda is actually a great choice for interim 3rd string. Hardnosed athletic dude that can run fast, has good size for RB and loves contact. He played both RB and wildcat QB in high school and Jake is much more useful in the game plan to beat LSU as a slot receiver/return specialist.

September 3, 20196 yr Whittington probably gone for the season and a redshirt. No need to risk his long term availability by rushing him back from surgery.

September 4, 20196 yr Sounds like Zach Shackelford's foot injury still lingers. Texas O-Line passes lone test prior to likely slugfest with LSU Spoiler The decision to give Braun the start, Herman said, was due to how the line would function if the coaches had a chance relatively early in the night to get Shackelford off of the field to rest a foot sprain that had been sore in the days leading up to the game. “Rather than throw Parker in there cold when we get Shack out, it would be better to start him, let him get in a little rhythm and when we get Shack out, put Denzel (Okafor) in having had that experience in this offense,” Herman said. TFB - Open Post | Tuesday, September 3rd Spoiler Injury Update | Post LaTech Game, RB Depth – CJ Vogel To the naked eye, it appeared Texas had escaped Louisiana Tech without any significant injuries. Well, that may not have been the case according to Head Coach Tom Herman in his Monday conference call. — RB Jordan Whittington will undergo surgery on a sports hernia and will miss six weeks. Whittington has had issues with the injury since aggravating it in HS. — WR Collin Johnson is day to day. — C Zach Shackelford is uncertain. — TE Jared Wiley is doubtful. — RB Kirk Johnson is out 6 weeks. — RB Daniel Young is out. At the moment, the Longhorn depth chart at RB is razor thin. To combat the lack of depth, freshman LB David Gbenda will be moved over to the tailback position for the upcoming week. The RB spot currently consists of Keaontay Ingram, Roschon Johnson and David Gbenda.
