And they can offer cush mineral concessions as well.

It doesn't really matter in any near-term. Per the analysis I've read, even if things started today, it would take 10+ years for any viable extraction mine (and attendant infrastructure) to be constructed. Rare earth minerals in Greenland is a long-term play. Long-term plays require certainty, an absence of hostility, etc.

Give Trump a deal that lets him claim victory, and he'll lose interest in any follow-through.

We have sources of rare earth minerals that could be utilized. Things like coal ash (fly ash) and material thats been processed for things like copper have higher concentrations. We lack facilities for refining the rare earth minerals. That's the big bottleneck.

Today should be interesting. That pinche cuck Rubio is meeting with the Danes.

Tomorrow is the day that Trump is offered the Nobel Peace Prize from Machado I think

And, as I told you, he put it by once; but for all that, to my thinking, he would fain have had it. Then he offered it to him again; then he put it by again; but to my thinking, he was very loath to lay his fingers off it. And then he offered it the third time. He put it the third time by, and still as he refused it the rabblement hooted and clapped their chopped hands and threw up their sweaty nightcaps and uttered such a deal of stinking breath because Caesar refused the crown

HOW MANY TIMES AM I GOING TO HAVE TO SAY THIS: RARE EARTHS AREN'T RARE!!!!!!!!!

Lanthanides are extremely common in the earth's crust. While the Chinese do have excellent deposits, particularily in the heavier lanthanides, but the US has no shortage of them. Mountain Pass is a very rich area, as is Bokan Mountain in Alaska. As an aside, you don't mine one lanthanide, you mine them all at the same time. Some of them are valuable, some of them are not, and some of them are toxic.

The issue is doing the refining and separation chemistry at a cost that makes them market viable. Right Now, to use a petroleum metaphor, the Chinese are producing rare earths at $10 a barrel. It's just not commercially viable to drill domestically at that price. If the government were to subsidize their production, you can have as much as much you want.

If anything, invading Greenland would destroy NATO, is a long term play, and once you decide to produce, you have the exact same problem on production cost in the marketplace that is bedeviling Mountain Pass.

Here is how Reuters summarized what is public about today’s talk

  • Trump reiterated that the U.S. needs Greenland and that Denmark cannot be relied upon to protect the island. He said that "something will work out" with respect to the future governance of the Danish overseas territory.

  • Earlier in the day, the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance at the White House.

  • The U.S. and Denmark will form a working group, which could meet in the coming weeks, to discuss a broad array of concerns regarding the island, the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland said following the meeting.

  • Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said they didn't manage to change the American position that it must acquire Greenland and a "fundamental disagreement" remains.

  • Greenland and Denmark say the island is not for sale, and that threats of force are reckless and security concerns should be resolved among allies.

  • Ahead of the meeting, Greenland and Denmark said they had begun to increase their military presence in and around Greenland in close cooperation with NATO allies.

I read the cliff notes of a poll asking US citizens their opinion on Greenland and also about military force/invasion. Memory might have failed, but I believe only 17% of folks think Greenland is very important and only 4% strongly supported an invasion.

Got to point out the five decade trend of Republicans administrations racking up astronomical and seemingly exponential national debt,

Edit: Here’s the link but I c/p the whole thing.

I read one of two outcomes to today’s talks and I would appreciate our euro aware surls weighing in:

  1. Nobody agrees, let’s have a high level taskforce, Trump backs down as media forgets.

  2. It’s war, more talking while the Danes reenforce the island enough so the invasion causes a helicopter crash and the unseemly sight of a SEAL team fighting in the streets with injuries.

Candidly, I think the Danes are going to fight, even if it’s a doomed platoon. To them, this is just an intolerable insult after the dying they have done for us in n Afghanistan

We'll announce that we are going to open a new base (or rather re-open one of the bases we've closed in the past 30 years) and call it a day while we bomb Iran's leadership. Nobody believes that China is going to take Greenland (it's doubtful they can take an island off their coast a 100 miles away) and nobody believes Russia is going to take on NATO when they are using fucking horses in Ukraine to carry their troops into battle.

Everything makes sense when you consider he's trying to distract from some serious shit. I'm sure he hoped they would sell, but they've publicly rebuked him many times (which is actually bad because toddlers do not like to be told no) and when even Mitch Fucking McConnell is telling you no on the Senate floor, it's a hard pass.

So we will turn our attention to Iran because it's easier (while pretending we control Venezuela).

If it comes to that, I will mourn every Danish death, and celebrate every American one. Because every Dane in combat will be defending his country and NATO, as we are obligated to do. And every American attacking a NATO nation will be committing treason, which is punishable by death.

Jesus fucking Christ. I love this country. I am and have been a patriot my whole life. And that call is one of the easiest ones I’ve ever made in my life.

I hate that man and every person who supports him. They have betrayed my country, they are levying war against it, and they can never be redeemed or forgiven.

Correct me if I’m wrong but I don’t think Trump has ever been the President when we’ve lost or been seriously bloodied in a fight. Or least when the American public was paying attention.

It's why we don't have boots on the ground in Venezuela, nor did we even prepare a fighting force of extraordinary magnitude to even go in there.

Putting thousands of American soldiers into the Venezuelan jungles to protect pipelines for Chevron is not a good look.

He was president when the framework for the Afghanistan pull out was set up. While he blames Biden (who probably isn't completely blameless in the chaos that ensued) it's got to really bother him that plenty of folks have correctly pointed out that it was his plan all along.

This is pure fantasy. No official government in the world is going to stand up to US military power. They will step aside if we show up and allow us to take control, why risk any loss of life in a futile effort? Now a fanatical guerilla force, that would give us problems.

But my question is why do we want this frozen shithole anyway? The “resources” argument is nonsense. They have nothing we can’t already get elsewhere.

We already have access to the Arctic Ocean. We already have a military base there and could have re-opened the other bases we used to have there.

So it's either a distraction from Epstein/etc. or Vance's backers want the minerals.

Either one makes us Russia and is destroying our standing in the world.

Could be as @Texas Jeff said, Trump wants to be known for the biggest expansion of the US. Which is dumb that he's willing to destroy NATO for that, but completely on-brand.

Not fantasy. I think the chances the Danes and locals put up some doomed effort to bloody our nose is serious. We of course would win, but this entire farce is predicated on the idea that in the end, the Europeans will back down and give/sell Greenland to Trump. If that was going to happen, the Europeans wouldn't have walked out of the meeting yesterday talking about fundamental differences. Everything about their demeanor suggests that yesterday's conversation was basically a non-starter.

I think they offered to let the US build as many bases as they want and to give Greenland its full "independence" and let them choose future arrangements with the US. I think Vance said "You will give us Greenland. Full stop." And here we are.

Denmark should not engage in any further conversations with any US envoy until that envoy reads aloud each of those names. That is a necessary predicated to any meeting, phone call, coffee chat, etc.
