I don't mean to derail this thread but I have a question about how the U.S. Treasury "will pay to the bearer on demand, five dollars."  Are they just going to give you a different $5 bill or what? 

Silver. Some larger bills were Gold certificates. That was when paper actually equaled a possessed commodity value.
