August 26, 20196 yr The Armadillo Grill in downtown Carrboro, North Carolina, advertises as "authentic Tex-Mex". To be as generous to them as I can be, they are fucking liars who will burn in hell for all eternity. I have had spicier vanilla ice cream than their hottest salsa, and don't get me started on the enchiladas. The Shiner Bock is real, so there is that.
August 26, 20196 yr Crab cakes - It’s to the point where I basically won’t order them anymore. I’d rather make my own with jumbo lump and as little breading/filler as possible. I can’t stand crab cakes with that flaky backfin meat and 50% bread and filler.
August 26, 20196 yr Dart Bowl enchiladas. Lately they’ve sucked. Tonight it took an hour and twenty minutes to get a lukewarm plate and they delivered them on styrofoam. They can’t get anybody to work for what they’re paying and it shows. Tonight there was one person cooking and one person running between the cafe and bar.
August 26, 20196 yr Lockhart BBQ. Can't tell if they've gotten shitty or the Texas BBQ game has been raised so far by the Franklin revolution that what we used to think was awesome is now shitty.

August 26, 20196 yr Chinese food. It's either amazing or very meh. No middle ground, and the "amazing" places are the ones that seem least likely to be, so you gotta try 'em all. Which leads to disappointment more often than not. Edited August 26, 20196 yr by Dutch
August 26, 20196 yr Popular Post Chicken fried steak. So many places serve dried-out slabs of flavorless meat with a loose flavorless breading that sloughs off as soon as it is touched. They cover it with enough bland gravy to hide the fact that the underlying CFS is completely uninteresting. It can be just so sad.

I've had some terrible Bloody Marys, but salt on the rim is not an indicator. One of my favorite ones on the planet (Whistle Binkie's pub, Rochester MN) comes with salt on the rim. It's a damn near perfect mix, and it's served with a pickle, olive, hunk of pepper jack, and Grain Belt chaser for $2.50 on Saturdays. Edited August 26, 20196 yr by Al_4_ISU

There are a few places that do them really well. Well, I should say, a few cooks who do them really well. The same place that was great "just last week" may suck if it's the wrong person's shift. But in general, yeah. It's amazing how a sandwich with so few ingredients can vary so wildly in its execution, but there you have it.

My folks were in town in July and before they headed out we went to Ozona for lunch on Saturday. Hadn't been in ages and have always loved their CFS so I decided to order it. Was incredibly underwhelming for exactly the reasons you mention but I'll add chewy and tough when it comes to most of these.

That's terrible to read, because my experience with Ozona was always the opposite. Granted, I haven't been there in five years, but damn that's disappointing.
August 26, 20196 yr Ceviche This is my favorite food dish when it is made correctly, yet the vast majority of establishments and people completely fuck it up by marinating the seafood in lime juice for entirely too long. I've gotten to the point that I ask for a taster of it at any restaurant before I order it. If they won't provide it, I just won't order it. There are two places in town that I have found that do this correctly nearly every time; Salt Trader and Monger. If you know of any others, I'd love the suggestions.
August 26, 20196 yr Cheese enchiladas. I don’t live in SA anymore so it’s like trying to find the Holy Grail.
August 26, 20196 yr Peaches Yes, peaches. They are either too meally/mushy or they have great texture but not sweet enough.
August 26, 20196 yr Ribs and brisket. So hard to sort through the places that do it right from those who sling crap.

August 26, 20196 yr Wings. I'll eat about any wing at the right price, but there are a lot of times when some aspect of them is clearly off, be it lame sauce, too little meat, or improper cooking. Good wings are about my favorite thing. I really hate it when a place just serves what amounts to crappy fried chicken and passes it off as wings.

"Authentic Mexican food" on a sign in the Carolinas. 99.9% of the time this is completely false advertising. Years ago, a Texas GC paid my company to do a clay tile roof in South Carolina because no locals knew how to do it. I went over there with my tile crew of all Mexican especialistos to do the work. After driving the whole way these boys were hungry for some food. Right across the street from our motel was Jimenez (or some such) Family Authentic Mexican Comida Deluxe Taqueria Restaurant and Cantina. So, 12 hungry tile guys and me stride in and get seated. Senor Jiminez, I noticed, suddenly had a stricken look that was ashen white as the blood drained from his face. Curious, I thought. As the food hit the table and the boys dug in I knew why Senor Jiminez had that sick look on his face. The food was spectacularly awful. He'd been foisting complete crap on the South Carolina rubes and with real Mexicans in his joint he was completely busted. My guys were pissed, went crazy and were cussing out his sorry ass left and right. Total pandelerium. They had that fool hopping and skipping. It was glorious. We were there about 2 weeks and the food quality went up. I don't know if it stayed improved or not after we left. /csb

August 26, 20196 yr Cheap pizza. I go to the Varsity (old double daves) once every 1-2 months bc it's cheap and I'm in the area for lunch. I even crave it sometimes, but every time I leave I hate myself for not making better choices.

(Especially the grade you are getting)
August 26, 20196 yr Steak. Like a steakhouse steak. It's either under seasoned and/or overcooked. I've stopped ordering steaks at steakhouses, and as a result very rarely eat one anymore.

August 26, 20196 yr "Brisket Tacos" outside of Texas or at any large chain restaurant *translation: pot-roast tacos on a soggy corn tortilla
August 27, 20196 yr Ribs and brisket. So hard to sort through the places that do it right from those who sling crap.Pretty sure thats what the Texas Monthly's Top 50 BBQ list is for
August 27, 20196 yr Collard greens - 95% of the time they're either too salty or completely bland. Always order them though whenever I see it on a menu just for that 5% chance they're divine.
