Um…. I’m pretty sure Gator fans aren’t really searching for a new coach who demonstrably can’t win big games and is viewed by the nation as an object failure.

I dunno…. just a wild guess.

But they have a recent history of convincing themselves otherwise.

I continue to support Franklin as Penn State's head coach and hope they give him at least another few years to turn it around.

Rumored to be worth $300M

https://gopsusports.com/news/2025/09/5/penn-state-adidas-partnership-2026

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State Athletics and adidas have announced a transformational, 10-year partnership that will see adidas become the official footwear, uniform, apparel and sideline partner of the Nittany Lions.

This groundbreaking apparel partnership unites the Nittany Lions’ storied legacy of 84 national championships and 327 conference championships with adidas’ industry-leading innovation and vision. The union creates a commitment to elevating the student-athlete experience, enhancing fan engagement and expanding the reach of the Penn State brand. The agreement is effective July 1, 2026.

“Penn State Athletics has been blessed with incredible partners throughout our history, but today, we step into a bold new era,” said Patrick Kraft, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics at Penn State University. “From the field to the court, the mat to the pitch, this partnership goes far beyond uniforms, it is unlike anything else in the marketplace. adidas is making an unprecedented commitment to Penn State: delivering record investment in our department, groundbreaking NIL and marketing opportunities, and access to technology and innovation that no other program can match. This agreement sets a new industry standard, fueling championship performances, empowering our student-athletes to grow their personal brands, and creating unmatched platforms for them to shine on the national and global stage. Together, we’re building something that will transform what’s possible for Penn State Athletics and for every student-athlete who wears the Blue & White.”

Adidas is in business to make money. How does shelling out $50M to replace a coach make them $50M plus $1? Penn State will run out every saturday wearing Adidas gear either way. I'll be surprised if there is any truth to that. It just doesnt make sense. Its not like PSU and Adidas are unique in that they are the only athletics partners with a 9 figure contract. Nike is paying us $250 million for a deal signed in 2015. How much money have they given Texas to get rid of Strong/Herman/RT?

They should have made this move a few years ago at least but good on them I guess for seeing last year for the fluke it was.

I wonder if they want that one back? They ran the Northeast and DMV in recruiting for decades.

I think Penn State is the second best recruiting job in the north.

Penn State is a great job. All this “blue blood or not” is meaningless. Massive fan base, massive money, great school, good conference. Franklin had a .700 winning percentage there. They can win big.

Nike has tons of other schools. Adidas has aggy and this deal with Penn St. They putting their golden egg in this basket.

I don't know if it's true or not. It's most likely bullshit. But an entity which is giving $30M a year to an institution can probably make demands like any other BMD.

Well, he definitely is like the undead - he can’t be killed by ordinary means. But Billy can’t be the new coach and the old coach all at the same time, so I’m not sure I agree with your quote.

Our late season rally last year saved him, but once I found out he was going to be calling plays again this year, it became a matter of when, not if.  The only slightly good news I can cling to is that he had a good recruiting year.  if every recruit in our last class bailed after his firing last year - we would possibly be in a worse place then if we did not give him the extra year this season.

Fortunately, we’re a basketball school.

Last year wasn’t a fluke IMO. He won 11 or more games 5/10 years there and another one with 10. The fair knock against him was that he can’t win against the top 10 and get over the hump.

He was pre-VY Mack Brown.  A very good recruiter who never won the games against teams with the same talent.

I love my Adizero shoes. They were given to me by an Olympian who gets all kinds of shoes to try out. Humble brag.  She wears a larger size than me so these just happened to fit. They happen to be Adidas. I don’t care. lol. 😂 I get compliments everywhere I go. On my shoes.

I know we are a Nike school but every Nike shoe I’ve had has sucked ass and blown out on me like a Manu Ginobili shoe during a game. I’ve had a pair of Adidas skateboard shoes from 2002 I wear pretty often and they are still rock solid plus Adidas pair of tennis shoes from the early 2010s which are still solid too. I haven’t bought any Adidas products in years so I can’t comment on their current quality but if Nike sucked 20 years ago when I stopped buying their shit, I imagine they would turn to dust now when I touch them.

I coulda.  Northwestern has the weakest home field advantage in the sport.  About half of the Cats rare wins over anOSU took place in Columbus.   Granted it historically was likely not a 50:50 split of home:away.

Nike has quality apparel in general, but the shoes got way worse sometime in the '00s.   Adidas shoes are 100% better.

Yeah true.  I was thinking making the semis was the fluke but it was more a quirk of scheduling than winning any tough games - no Michigan to allow them to get to 11-1 in the regular season.  Then they predictably lost the CCG against a real team but drew Boise and SMU in the playoffs to allow them to get to the semis before facing another real team.

4-21 vs the top 10 and 4-17 against Ohio State and Michigan in 11.5 years on the job.

Dick Rod played at WVU. He was a teammate of a buddy of mine.

Cignetti also went to WVU and if I remember correctly Curt was a backup QB and threw one career pass. His dad, Frank, was head coach at WVU, replaced Bowden.

For a state that size, WV produces a lot of good coaches.

Last season was his peak at PSU. They played the majority of the weakest teams in the playoffs. Their path to the semis was easier than anyone else's. Franklin is Ohio State's bitch, he folds in big games time after time. Ever since the Oregon game they've been in a free fall, they may not even become bowl eligible.

SMU was a real team but Penn State got us at home in 25 degree weather and Jennings had one of the worst games of his career. They only outgained SMU by 70 yards. Which doesn't detract from your point that it was an advantageous path for them to get to the semis.

I can see Penn State going the way of Tennessee for a while. Pedigree, fans, right pieces but just wandering as conference mates clean up.  Although I don’t think Moore at Michigan is the answer which will help.

Come to think of it, Heupel has kind of a Franklin-type thus far.

My mother was a PSU graduate back in 1945 and introduced me to college football at a very early age. First time seeing them play was versus TAMU. This was probably 1969’ish and we travelled down to College Station with the North Texas Penn State alumni group. Two bus high school loads at that time, there weren’t a lot of Penn State alumni in the area. From that day forward, I was hooked with College Football. Thank you Mom and good bless you! Actually had the opportunity to see Texas play PSU during the McWilliams tenure and it was one of most pleasurable away game that I have been to ever. She actually passed away on the same date as Paterno. Thank goodness she was unaware of the Pedi aspect.

Wonder if PSU will come for Elko? I know he went to Penn, but isn't he from like Penn or NJ or something? I'm too lazy to look. Honestly, it might be a smart hire. Not because of aggy this year, they're fool's gold, but a lot of defensive talent is from there and he would be a better fit, imo.

I worked at a foot locker like store in HS, and could get basically an unlimited number of free and cheap shoes, so I tried them all. I started wearing ASICs then and never stopped. I stopped running for exercise more than a decade ago, but I still buy ASICs running shoes because they are comfortable as fuck.
